Currently see the Sonos Beam Gen 1 Beam available in Black and White for a bargain.
It is refurbished direct from Sonos, so a bit of a bargain at £269..

I paid £369 for a brand new one from Costco a month ago - if I had a time machine I would buy go back and buy this instead...

Good price for this in 2022. Only paid 285 ish in 2019 for a new gen 1.

Paid £365 for my gen 2 last month.

Yes it has atmos but I really can not tell much difference from the gen 1.
    gg1pl's avatar
You can't tell the difference with ATMOS on Gen 2 as it's fake/virtual and has no vertical channels/speakers which are required for real ATMOS

Dolby will let anyone stick on their ATMOS label if you pay (edited)

Tempted by this. We have a JBL soundbar / subwoofer thing that gets a bit too boomy and you end up watching TV with one hand on the volume. While this wouldn't be quite as bassy, would this be worth it for the clarity alone?
    Zegna's avatar
It will be more bassy than you could imagine. But good bass, not boomy

Don’t assume because it’s small it won’t provide the bass that a subwoofer can. Just read the reviews, it does because it’s well engineered with very well designed drivers. JBL, LG etc and the other garbage cannot do this. As a rule, a good sub should cost £500 alone stand alone. That’s how much it takes to produce a good one. so if you ever get one within a package for £200, you know its going to be terrible. (edited)

I found the Beam pretty anaemic until I added the Sub which gets into silly money.
    mankymanning's avatar
Where as I frequently have to turn the bass down on the Beam just on its own as I find it so powerful. YMMV.

My reference btw is I had a Yamaha YSP 1600, a stereo pair of full size Apple HomePods and then this. The Beam was the best of the lot.

Given heat due to the white be available.
The main dealer has had the black (Refurb) at this price for weeks. Was hoping with the Ray coming out it would come down a bit , as I’ve been constantly looking 👀…

ps I have 2 refurb Sonos speakers and they work as good as my brand new ones. So don’t be put off because they are classed as Refurbished.

Is there a cheaper sub that u can connect to this rather than the sonos sub the same way you can connect the ikea rear speakers? Thanks (edited)
    jimel's avatar
No but there's a Sub Mini coming allegedly
  6. MrBeginner's avatar
Sonos seem to drop support for their older gen products and have had to back down recently. Be warned.
    Minstadave's avatar
They didn't back down. They did drop support for older products and moved everything else on to their new S2 app/system. The old speakers still work but aren't compatible with S2 so you can still use the old S1 app with them but they act as an entirely separate system.

What Sonos backed down on was what happened when you used their discount system. An old unsupported speaker gave you a 15 or 30% discount on a new one. Sonos originally stopped the old speaker from working completely when you upgraded meaning all your speaker was good for was the bin. They backed down on this aspect. Your old speaker remains fully working now. (edited)

does gen 1 have apple airplay ?
    Hawkandr0's avatar
    Yes it does
  8. MarcusFletcher's avatar
This is £10 cheaper than the new Sonos Ray coming out in 2 days. I am not interested in the hdmi or voice connectivity etc. Which is better as a basic TV sound bar? Not interested in the atmos compatibility, just pure sound quality. They both can use an existing IR remote to control the volume too I think. (edited)
    MunkiMagic's avatar
The Sonos Beam due to the side firing speakers, which provides a wider soundstage. However, this reviewer has noted the sound quality is comparable between them, even though the Ray is cheaper. (edited)
  9. kotc16's avatar
Cracking price for a great bit of kit, true you really need a sub to make it outstanding but just add 2 play 1’s and it’ll do a decent job.
  10. Chris85's avatar
Anyone received theirs yet? / How long did it take?
  11. vassy4u's avatar
Paying £369 for a Gen 1 is crap man. When Gen 2 is around that price.
    DrBawjaws's avatar
    So I guess it’s lucky that it’s £269 then

Yes the LG soundbar for £79 is absolutely rubbish. Muddy sound with stupid bass - people are buying because it is cheap, but it's so bad, it's not even worth £50.

I can vouch for refurbished models from Sonos. I bought the Move refurbished and it was excellent. Essentially packaged like brand new.
  14. NamesDean_'s avatar
No Atmos, so its a no from me.
    googleboogle's avatar
Need a gen 2 for that
  15. deleted248415's avatar
If they had the arc refurbished at decent priceI'd be interested they want £799 for refurbished . These beam don't have enough power. The playbar was powerful but old tech (edited)
    MildmanneredCalvin's avatar
Got an original playbar about 10 years old now. Apart from needing a restart every now and again it doesn't miss a beat. I've got the bass on minimum for the telly since I'm in a semi detached.
  16. gaz32478's avatar
Decided to go for this. Weirdly it's now listed in my account as two separate orders, but I definitely only ordered once. Anyone else had this? (edited)
    gaz32478's avatar
Turns out they somehow are saying I made two orders (i did not). Both weirdly have the same order number, and two payments have been taken (order conformations were sent hours apart).. I'll have to sort it. Grr. (edited)

I paid £228 for a refurb (looked and packaged as brand new) direct from Sonos in early March, it is very good for that price.

Good old sonos, still overrated by everyone and their mothers.
    googleboogle's avatar
Overrated and overpriced. But does what it says on the tin.
loved my proper 5.1 system but the wires and messing about was to much hassle in the end. These do the job and if you buy at the right time a good price.
  19. rw10uk's avatar
Was the brand new you bought a gen 2?

    I bought a brand new Gen 1...
  20. euanshoosmith's avatar
I have this from a few years ago, even with Gen to and Ray - it is still absolutely awesome and a no brainer for most - especially when coupled with some ones for surround sound
  21. TBATBA's avatar
I've been looking at the sonos and LG soundbar. It's going into a media wall and the front will be flush with the wall. I need a half decent soundbar which projects sound forwards rather than upwards. I'm the sort of person usually happy with TV speakers but as that will be flush with the wall I need a soundbar 🤦‍♂️. Any recommendations without breaking the bank. Cheers

Polk Signa s2.. have a look at reviews
  22. Hawkandr0's avatar
Good price considering current prices of the Beam 2.

I’m hoping by the time I eventually get around to buying a tv and sound bar that I’ll be able to get a refurb Beam 2.
  23. Leeabr101's avatar
Bought a refurbed gen 1 last time round and love it. Came fully boxed and looked brand new. Very impressed however im no audiophile etc but it does the job for me
  24. Hawkandr0's avatar
Out of interest, how regularly/ irregularly do these come into stock?
  25. sean_Thompson's avatar
Bluelight offers a 15% discount but not to refurnished. Would work on the Ray though
  26. Max-Power's avatar
I bought the Gen 2 earlier this year and it's ace for the size in my room. Didn't even need a sub. Heard that the Gen 1 and Gen 2 ain't much different other than Atmos, so great price this.

Good find - thanks for taking time to share

Are the refurbs included in the 100 day free returns?
    ecraigy's avatar
    Author
I'm no expert, but I've read the faqs and terms and conditions - I see nothing restricting a refurb from being returned.
Again I'm no expert, but I wouldn't be surprised if the refurbs are actually 100-day returns.
  29. gaz32478's avatar
Sonos emailed me to state that due to a glitch in their system they processed my order twice and charged me twice. I was unaware that this was going to happen and so went into the red for a time on my bank account. They've said they're going to refund me and have asked me to send the item back. It would perhaps be nice if they did something as some kind of good will gesture for the hassle caused, but I won't hold my breath. (edited)
    mikki777's avatar
I hope that you have tested both speakers and left yourself the one with a better condition? Or they were same good ? Thx

Anyone have experience with the gen 1 Vs gen 2?

I know the gen 2 is meant to have simulate Atmos but wanted to know if it's worth the extra.

In one of the reviews I saw on YouTube the guy said it's like when you go from 720p to 4k but can it really be that much of a difference. (edited)
    Chris85's avatar
I would be interested to know this too, if anyone has any experience with both?
  31. sean_Thompson's avatar
Are there any discount codes or cashback?
  32. mirrorman's avatar
Yes wanted to ask this before buying.. unidays doesn’t work and bluelight I’m not sure
  33. MJGM's avatar
Just had to return mine as the remote keeps stopping working and forcing a reboot everyday! Wondering if this is why they are refurbs
    googleboogle's avatar
Remote as in the app ?

i would make sure the f software on beams was fully update as that triggers reboots. (edited)
