Whats the point of 100hz.. twice of 50hz when everyone needs 120hz? They call it a gaming TV too
    Gamong needs 60 or 120hz.. consoles don't recognise 100hz

I got this in the last deal a few weeks back, at £400. It's a very good TV at this price. Blacks don't quite match OLED of course, but the contrast is still great and the HDR is brilliant. Motion is fine, and after watching The Batman with the included soundbar, watching things on my C1 makes me want a soundbar with that as well. Word of warning though, the UK version doesn't have hdmi 2.1 and so can't do 4k 120hz, so if you game that's a compromise. If you don't then there aren't any real negatives with this TV at this price. VA panel so viewing angles are a bit limited but that's the story with most TVs that aren't OLED.

Edit: Forgot to mention, folk complain about the OS and how it's slow on this TV. It is a bit laggy, but nothing that gets me frustrated. (edited)

I bought this last year on release and loved it! But it was my constant badgering of Phillip.Teo of HDTVtest that got him to query the head of TCL Europe to finally admit the UK version didn't have the HDMI 2.1 features of the EU version.

I returned it 89 days later (costco ftw) and waited for black friday & picked up an LGC1.

I love the picture quality, but miss the TCL's brightness and 10x better sound quality!

That Onkyo Soundbar was the MVP!

Oh and, shockingly, the LGC1's OS is obscenely slow and laggy,.no better than the TCL in my view.
Was pretty gutted about that at apparently the CX is buttery smooth.

Ok had a chance to play with this thing.

Compared to a 2019 LG OLED B9 (tuned picture to be accurate), and after adjustment it’s pretty damn good. For £390, it’s excellent, and not too far from my OLED which cost £1600! The standard picture settings are AWFUL, just like 99% of TVs now, the image is so bright it hurts.

    Settings (apply to all sources):

    Picture preset: Movie
    Brightness and Colour saturation: 50

    Advanced menu:

    In brightness settings:
    Brightness 50
    Contrast 100
    Black Level 50

    Dynamic contrast Off
    Black Stretch Low
    Dynamic backlight Off
    Local Dimming High
Micro Dimming Off (This seems to create terrible artefacts, avoid)
    Gamma 2

    Colour menu
    Colour Saturation: 50
Tint: 45 (hugely important - otherwise it’s waaay to green)
    Colour Temp Warm

    Clarity menu
    Sharpness 0
    All else Off

    Motion menu
Everything off (LED motion clear is awful, blue and judder reduction causes image processing issues)

If this is too dim, turn dynamic backlight to ‘Brightness +’. For me this is far too bright. Use ECO at night. (edited)
    TheDude145's avatar
This is pretty much my exact settings as well. In HDR I found local dimming high resulted in a bit of black crush, so low is perfect for me, but it's personal preference.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen such a divisive TV on here so far I’ve heard:
    - No HDMI 2.1 (how many console games can hit 4k 120?).
    - Peak brightness is halved in HDR gaming mode.
    - Connection to the HDMI ports can be temperamental for a small number of owners.
    - OS is supposedly laggy compared to the main players.
    - No firmware updates since 2020 and it’s stuck on Android 9.

Despite all of the above, I’ve taken a punt on this.

Already have the LG CX for gaming, so this will go in the bedroom - built-in soundbar is a nice touch (means I don’t need to invest in another).
Hopefully a Fire Stick 4K will solve the whole operating system issue - just need to do initial calibration in the OS first. If this thing can hit 1000 nits on HDR content then I may need to reconsider putting this in my dimly lit bedroom

Think about your use case and buy the TV according to that - if you’re a gamer then you likely want to future proof with HDMI 2.1 and solid HDR in game mode, OLED is probably suitable or a high end QLED.
If you’ve got a main TV already and need something cheap (and you’re willing to use a Fire Stick or similar), then this seems to punch WELL above its current price point.

Okay so I tried it out with my ps5. Firstly I don't know if I'm just dumb but I couldn't find a way to turn off game mode, it just automatically turns on when I switch to the source. From what I've read though, the increased input lag would make it horrible so probably best to leave it on.

Overall it's definitely a bit dimmer, I did the % window brightness test on youtube. It would go from 100 nits to 400 with ease, and then a slight increase at 1000 and I couldn't see any difference after that. So I reckon it tops out at anywhere between 600-800 nits. Then I did the same test from the youtube app on the TV. Hits 400 and 1000, and even gets slightly brighter at 2000 nits, probably tops out at around 1100-1200.

I have no idea why this is the case, and if this TV was still at full price gamers could probably put this TV to the side and go for an oled. However, at £390, even with it not quite hitting 1000 nits in game mode, it's still a far better gaming hdr experience than almost anything else at this price. I thoroughly enjoyed gaming on it, highlights still popped and contrast was fine, (important to switch local dimming on, off by default). Hope this helps, and you can get more opinions on it before making a decision. Deal 's not on anymore, but it's been going on sale all year, there will be another one soon most likely.

To those who already own a 55C826K, what’s this VA panel like from different angles? I looked at a different model TCL last year but as soon as I stepped off the dead centre line, the picture became pretty bad quickly. Thanks!
    TheDude145's avatar
Going pretty side on, the picture definitely loses a bit of it's vibrancy. It's best to watch this TV centre on, but I wouldn't say it's terrible from the side, and slightly off centre is fine, I don't notice anything.
  6. AJR41's avatar
Ok, the TV has arrived! I haven't done all of the tweaks and settings that people suggest here, and I haven't setup the satellite channels yet - here are my initial thoughts with a Fire Stick plugged in.
    - Picture looks good in Movie mode (for all content), doesn't look as punchy as my OLED but can't argue for the price.
    - Motion handling is decent with movies, once you turn off all the processing junk. Slight edit: if it’s too jumpy for your taste then you can turn on judder reduction on a scale of 0-10, which helps.
    - Android system is a bit slow, but it helps to disable all the stuff you don't need (especially if you plan to use a Fire Stick or similar). I have not tried the EPG yet.
    - Audio from the sound bar is perfect for my use, it actually sounds better than my Sony HT-X8500 sound bar. Dialogue is much clearer, even with the built in subwoofer you don't get muddied mids, really good stuff.
    - It gets nice and loud at 50% volume, room filling audio at a distance of 12 ft. Sound is directly projected in front of the TV but the virtual surround does a good job of creating a wider soundstage effect (not to my personal taste though).
    - HDR looks good, Dolby Vision has a bright and dark setting, brightness is nice for my bedroom (fairly dim). Not sure how it would perform in a brightly lit room.
    - I don't really need it for gaming, my use is purely movies and TV in my bedroom using a Fire Stick 4K Max. Maybe at some point I'll hook up the PS5 or Nvidia Shield to it, just to see how it handles gaming.

All in all, I think it's great for £389 - not the quickest OS but tolerable (comparing with a 10 year old 1080P Sony and an LG CX OLED) and the 'problem' is mostly solved if you use a Fire Stick or other device. The sound bar is my highlight, I have the aforementioned Sony and a Sonos Arc + Sub to compare with, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that the built in sound bar sounds really clear and well-tuned. Thanks again OP

Edit: Ok, I couldn’t resist putting my helpful hat on. Here it is connected to a PS5 playing the PS5 version of Deep Rock Galactic, which does support 120Hz. As you can see, VRR isn’t working and 120Hz isn’t working either - using an 8k certified HDMI 2.1 cable.
Not sure if I’m doing something wrong, but I can’t change picture mode either, so can’t confirm for certain if the brightness is halved in game mode - the TV switched on game mode automatically. I will say, however, that it looks quite bright anyway and works well in 60hz mode only. Spider-Man Miles Morales also looks good on it.

2nd edit: slightly annoying but I seem to have a few stuck or dead pixels I might run a pixel fix video to see if that helps tomorrow. Here’s one:

    47893468_1.jpg

3rd edit: found more of these marks, they could be dirt or dust to be fair - may not necessarily be dead pixels. Any tips? (edited)

Any TV could arrive with dead pixels so wouldn't let that put you off. Although it looks more like an insect to me. Again, wouldn't let that put you off because they can get in to most modern LCDs now.

Mini-LEDs, as the name suggests, are smaller diodes that are less than 0.2mm. A device like a TV features an LCD panel with LEDs for backlighting, with the panel used to control where light is displayed on the screen. Depending on what's on the display, the LEDs are lit up fully or dimmed down for dark scenes.

Ignore the new ratings. The 2019 revision got rid of the A+, A++ and A+++ ratings hence all TVs are now F or G. It's not as if new TVs have suddenly become energy guzzlers.
  12. SoperMan's avatar
Interesting that this is a UK only model, only sold by Amazon and at a huge discount. Can't believe TCL are making big profits at this price (that includes free delivery) - stuff like Mini LED, QLED and good soundbar are not that cheap. Makes me wonder why TCL is continuing the production. (edited)
    hcc27's avatar
Economies of scale - TCL, while relatively less well known in these parts, is projected to leapfrog LG into second place in terms of panels shipped by later this year, right behind Samsung at No.1. In fact, they also manufacture all of Samsung's non-QLED TV panels as well.

    hdguru.com/omd…22/

They're pursuing a market penetration strategy at the moment, sacrificing high profit margins for market share grabbed from other manufacturers including LG and Samsung.

I suspect TCL and Hisense will surpass both LG and Samsung in panel volume within the next 5 years, given their current trajectories. I won both brands and find both TV's incredible value for money.

How you finding the Samsung? I stalled on buying the 50" for approx £530 through Samsung EPP on Wednesday only to go and buy on Friday and see the price has gone up by £80.

Was going to wait for it to drop again but tempted to maybe go for this instead. £140 cheaper but bigger screen and possibly better sound via the sound bar (although I already have an admittedly aging) yahama soundbar I can use.
