Don't forget the "inbetweener" Model Y LR (336kW/450 BHP) with Accelleration Boost (378kW/507BHP) (for around an additional £1,500) and the 0-60 time drops from 4.8s to 4.3s (officially), but actually under 4s (certainly on my car anyway).

Yet still, some automakers are increasing their prices just now.
    BentoBox's avatar
Unlike most other car makers, Tesla makes a massive profit on each EV it sells. They kept putting prices up as they couldn't meet demand and still the demand increased.
Now though demand has dropped massively, particularly in China I believe and their share price has tanked.
So they can afford to massively drop prices.

This or a Kia Niro? I am most interested in good range and reliability. Don't care about self-driving farts or features like that.

I’ve got an e-niro. Appears to have only lost £10k value in almost 4 years which is great. Battery still 100% after 42k miles

When Hydrogen comes along, these will be persecuted just like diesels are now.

May as well buy a diesel just before 2030 and get yourself a deal.
    EQL's avatar
Hydrogen isn't ever going to be useful for cars. Batteries (BEV) are where it is at.

no one can deny great cars and tech is immense defo still leading the way. Build quality has imporved also but still leaves a lot to be desired. Good deal though and i'd have one if i had the cash and looking
    Arold's avatar
Build quality on my China-made March 2022 Model 3 LR seems up to the standard of the BMWs I had before. Still no rattles, squeaks, misaligned panels, paint faults. Maybe I've been lucky but I'm delighted. (edited)

Polestar2 over this or the 3.

And if you are interested in a used 3, im reliably informed from someone inside the trade, to hold on a little longer, as the price will crash even more. So much so, hes stopped trading them because of the risk of loss after plummeting prices during his time buying them in and selling them on. (edited)

I think all EV’s should have a little plaque mounted inside stating how many child slaves died mining the cobalt for the batteries.

They have mobile technicians that come out in a converted Model X. I am 2hrs or 140miles from the nearest dealer.

still more expensive than my 2019 A6 with all extras at £38k. Better build quality, driving experience and 700miles range.
Unless you're driving 15k+ miles every year I see no reason for them, price wise. (edited)
    deleted9453's avatar
Can you get a 2023 A6 with all the extras for £38k?

    I doubt that very much.

I’m at a loss about what to do!

Yesterday just agreed to buy a nearly new model y (not direct from Tesla) that would’ve saved £11k on a new car - 6 months old, low mileage, enhanced auto pilot and has the parking sensors.

Now the saving is only £6k or £3k without the enhance auto pilot! (edited)

I am in the insurance claims industry and issue with Tesla across the board is

    (1) not enough authorised accident repairers. No availability of parts I know a garage in Glasgow with 60 vehicles sitting waiting on parts in there premises

    (2) a friend was recently in a fault accident repairer quoted 10 months for the parts they actually came in 4 months

    (3) if you are in an fault accident and the cars undriveable the repairer nor insurers will give you a hire car until repairs start. My mate hired a car himself

    (4) insurance companies are writing off Teslas due to lack of parts

    (5) make sure you have aa/rac as if you have a blow out /damage a tyre or wheel you are snookered

My tip is if you buy a Tesla vehicle make sure you pay the extra premium for car hire cover on your policy that some companies offer. Alternatively don’t be in a car accident

Mind you if your in a non fault accident your guaranteed a nice we replacement for months paid by other insurers
    Topper1900's avatar
Point 5 also applies to ICE vehicles? Possibly points 1 to 4 also apply if you buy the wrong car!
  12. Trawlerman's avatar
Buy something else. I have one as a company car.

Suspension is rock hard- more uncomfortable than my previous car which was a Golf R!

Regen isn’t controllable so it’s like a pogo stick unless you drive like the 30mph brigade.

No pre delivery inspection- tyres over inflated, headlights pointing towards Mars…

Can’t do anything without taking your eyes off the road to use the display….just put a heads up display in them! And make the heating and wipers controllable without crashing…..

Get’s 200 miles on a motorway from the Long Range…at motorway speeds. Unless it’s winter and then expect less.

It used 50% battery over 10 days at Xmas- Sat on the drive going no where.

So many things right with these cars, but just as many things wrong with them!
    plewis00's avatar
I've heard these issues before but never seen first hand, especially the new vehicle states and some tolerances on build quality - but probably easy to overlook if a company car. Is the battery drain because of Sentry Mode and the car computer basically always on? One of my friends came back to a flat battery after parking his in a multi-storey long stay car park, so they seem to be suited to daily or at least regular use and charging.

It's a shame they don't have a version of model 3/Y below £40000 luxury tax threshold
    deleted9453's avatar
Doesn't matter - this tax doesn't apply on EV's until April 2025. If you buy one now you will never have to pay the luxury tax, just the VED (currently £165) when its introduced to EV;'s in 2025,

I've had a model 3 for three years now, every time I had to deal with Tesla they've been fantastic. Had an issue with the front end suspension, booked and remote diagnosed via the app.
Popped in the following week, and they replaced the part and had me on my way before lunchtime.

The Teslas are good looking cars, and the tech is amazing but the build quality is slightly below rivals. The Polestars and electric Volvos are ahead in this area, even if they're marginally slower (but still rapid).
    hcc27's avatar
Well I've driven a couple of Teslas, a Polestar and an Ioniq, but nothing came close to the Nio ES8 I drove recently in Norway (belonging to a colleague working in a local subsidiary of my company), with its auto 5 min battery swap technology.

When they say watch out for the Chinese EV onslaught over the next few years, they aren't kidding. Nio, Xpeng, BYD, Li Auto, SAIC, Geely etc will be flooding the market over the next few years with EU-spec models. Sell those Tesla shares if you're still hanging on to them. MG really is close to bottom rung amongst Chinese EV models, and look how well they're doing already here.

Can someone guide on home charging installation options, there is one charger from Tesla for £475 which needs to be locally installed and other options from likes of Octopus which is starting from 1k but includes installation etc, Tesla charger not compatible with these smart tariffs, it's my first ev hence some guidance would be appreciated
    jazzist's avatar
The Tesla Wall Connector is smart looking, the cheapest you can get, and has the Bluetooth button on the plug to open the charge flap which is really handy.

However it does not have PEN fault detection like the majority have these days and to be compliant with latest electrical regs, with the earthing arrangement in the majority of UK homes, if used outside it needs an Earth electrode or PEN fault detection box fitting at time of installation making it slightly more expensive to fit. If it's fitted in a garage attached to a house (or integrated garage) (i.e. not a detached outbuilding) and the cable can't reach to charge the car outdoors (i.e. charger fitted at back and NOT the front of garage where the cable could be used under the garage door) then it's in the earth equipotential zone of the house and can be connected directly to the RCBO supplying it (i.e. not via PEN fault detection box) and the house earth can be used. If this is the case then it can't be beaten for price except for the Mobile Connector.

Example PEN fault detection box (cheapest type with basic/worst type of fault detection tech (contactor with voltage range limits)): electrical2go.co.uk/gar…tml

If it is going in a garage and it doesn't need to be as weatherproof etc. then it's worth remembering that the Mobile Connector is only £180 and is 32A capable with a Blue Plug adaptor (£39 from Tesla). It's a dumb EVSE but that's all you need with a Tesla. Just get an electrician to install an interlocked commando socket in your garage. If this was going outside then the Commando would still need the the PEN fault protection or TT earthing so probably not advisable (especially as the Mobile Connector where the blue adaptor plugs in is not fully weatherproof).

Second cheapest unit currently after the Tesla Wall connector is probably an Easee One, this has PEN fault and DC leakage protection built in like most these days so requires much less thought when installing, a simple job for any electrician (just check, if not using an electrician that has experience fitting EV chargers, that they don't power it in a spare way from your consumer unit using an MCB if that MCB is protected by a type AC RCD, yes the Easee One has DC leakage protection but via an RCD that can get blinded by DC is not a good idea). Easee One also looks really smart and is both tethered (cable locks in) and untethered.. everyone seems to rate it v highly.

Have a look at Smart Home Charge website for installed prices (they also list installation price for the Tesla Wall Connector, you buy and free issue to the installer) and TopCharger.co.uk for EVSE reviews. (edited)

What I fond especially significant is how the model 3 sticks to he road. Then thinking about safety of the evs , my family and pedestrians around us and I'm happy. Just a thought for people.

Before you bash those for having an ev and even justifying the benefits for having them, think of this.

There are many reasons why people get them. Some its new tech, others it's financial, others it's environment and helping the plannet. Others ma be the health benefit or safety for their families. Others may be reduced fire risk. It csn be a singular reason or an accumulation.

But before you quickly reply back with a hand picked argument of a rare occasion that you'll use to try snd belittle evs, think of it as another item such as phone or TV.

I bet many people here have at some point chose something, a TV, latest laptop, latest phone or even a luxury holiday. I could sit here badmouthing people got going on a lxy holiday to maldieves and say they should go to Spain. I could say they should spend 600 on a TV rather than 3k. We buy things for different reasons. Some of yo would rather keep a diesel that vibrates or has a loud noise. Its our choice.

With evs the benefits are for the masses as independently researched. If you dont agree then fine. So please stop bashing people for their purchases. After all yo don't need to justify any purchases or posts you make on here.

Bottom line this is a deal site. Just in the same way I'd not comment on a post about women's dresses as I don't want one, don't deliberately come here to bash deals on things you don't want.

    .just a polite notice

Glad Im leasing mine. Mines the long range version, mostly short trips at moment so an easy 250m even in winter, 300+ easy in summer. Performance for an SUV is ridiculous, it's addictive making bmw 330ds look daft at the traffic lights. If you want a car to entertain you, and make you feel like a big kid, then a tesla is the only option.

My favourite new upgrade is the remote fart, yes I'm childish.

Horrible car, I had a model 3 for 6 months and now have a BMW I4. Absolute night and day. Tesla build quality is shocking, cheap and nasty. Not a very exciting looking car either, very formulaic, just looks like a boring family saloon. The cabin is just an empty shell with a big iPad, I hated it, it's not at eye level. The i4 has a glorious huge curved touchscreen panel wrapped along dash. It drives beautifully V Tesla which felt very one dimensional with horrible suspension. I'll never go near Tesla again........I am honestly left scratching my head on why they sre so revered. My personal opinion is now the other major manufacturers have caught up & are launching full EV Tesla will just become another EV supplier instead of the pioneers they were. Hence why the share price has popped. The Tesla honeymoon is over.

The hate & vitriol for Tesla & Musk is…well…ridiculous. Most of this is based on jealousy, &/or belief of mainstream media reporting of the company & Musk. Mainstream media are mostly controlled & paid for by oil, petrol, &/or legacy auto who hate the disruption Tesla have caused their industries, in turn losing them billions & eventually ending their global dominance. Tesla also never pay for any advertising, annoying MSM even more as they make nothing from them. I used to be uninformed & also dislike Tesla & Elon based on ‘what I’d heard & read’ till I started doing my own research at the start of 2020, learning what the company went through & how Elon started & developed himself, rather than listening to MSM. It really opened my eyes to what is a transformative, world changing company, & a person driven to improve the world we live in for a more sustainable future. Do you own research before judging & you will learn a great deal….
No one else / any company ever made any effort (& succeeded) to improve sustainability at this scale..

BTW - absolutely stonking deal this when comparing to previous prices

I picked up my Y a month ago paying £3000 extra! It won’t save you money against fossil fuel if you decide to use the Tesla Supercharger. I drove 1500 miles during the holiday away from home, and it costed the same as my old RRS, which was only capable of doing 34mpg. TBH, the EV age is nowhere near UK just of now. Charging EV away from home is both inconvenient and expensive. Price wise, the Model Y is starting at £30,000 in China after the price drop last week, which is more close to its real value. There are plenty of room to drop the price. I won’t recommend anyone to go near them in the next 3 years until the EV maker put the price to where they should be.
    deleted9453's avatar
You must be getting poor wh/mile then whilst charging at peak rate at superchargers.

If superchargers hit 70p per kwh it still costs me less than a diesel doing 50mpg but I do get 3.7+ mi/kwh in my M3.

I came here for the comments and to see what FUD is spewed around, but there are some valid criticisms esp with the older generation of Tesla's.

From the fortunate ownership position of a Q4 2022 Tesla Model Y LR (after cashing in shares at the right time after investing in them since 2016 so got the car for pretty much 1/2 price) and having test driven practically all the competition in this category segment (VW, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Audi, MG etc) - 2 main differentials that jump up for me are:

    1) The Software UI and OTA software updates which keep improving nearly every aspect the car over several years
    2) The Supercharging network. Their biggest USP. Yes its opening up, but nothing beats the ease, reliability, availability, experience and general elimination of any range anxiety you have when commuting to 90% of the UK.

Could go into so many different areas of performance, efficiency and the fact the that the Model Y is the safest mass produced car in the world, as a new dad that matters alot - when you see a car bein chucked from a cliff and all 4 passengers survive? What engineering.

They're not perfect (turning circle of a tank as an example lol). No car is, but for those that can afford it are buying one of the most consummate all rounded cars ever to hit the road that has a balance of space, practicality, performance and safety (and the sales globally is a reflection of that).

For me? Best car I've ever owned that brings a smile to both head and heart - and the price cuts? Yup, hurts for a certain set of buyers hard with the price drop, but in my circumstance, only £2k less + I got the model where they still had the USS by default.

Superchargers are much cheaper than those in the link. Max I have paid at peak time was 50p per kwh. More often than not its billed at between 38-45p per kwh.

At home I charge for 10p per kwh.

UK Fleet, company car & PCP 3 yr deals will also start dropping into the market this year depressing private sales even further. but days of premium pricing are over - My opinion only but these will need to drop into the £35-40 k range to be competitive now subsidies have gone.

I think the ICE ban is a pipedream - never going to be a full ban, and hybrids are the way to go for anyone with a decent mileage requirement, but BEV for Town city driving where you can charge at home is a no brainer. Just need someone sensible to steer BEV away from the luxury segment and come up with the a new "Mini" (original Austin not BMW) - No frills', no whistles and bells just a great town car that gets the job done. Why do you need a 20" infotainment screen. Just a speedo, range indicator and a voice control module for mobile phones (music, satnav, diagnostics can all be sent to a mobile). come on auto designes - get back to KISS principles.
