Think it's been mentioned on here before but if your boiler is capable of modulation, it's probably better to get the EU version that's sold on the .IE store as it modulates the flow temperature and doesn't just switch it on and off again.... Makes it more efficient and saves some money.

Do you have a linky please

What is the difference between this & hive?
    sizo44's avatar
From what I can gather, Nest and Hive are smart thermometers, as is this from tado. But with tado you can add trvs to radiators to enable per room heating!

Bought this a couple weeks ago after I had confirmed the only difference was the colour. No idea why it's so much cheaper! Works well, easy to install.

There is one major downside though: If you want to have full access to the more advanced features (geofencing, open window detection, etc) you need to pay for a subscription that will set you back another 3 GBP per month. They still sort of work without a subscription, but instead of turning off the heating automatically when you leave the house it just gives you a notification on your phone that you need to confirm every time.

I think that this is a bit of a scam, since they don't mention this on the product page and every other manufacturer gives you these features for free...

You need to buy an older version as it came free and they haven't removed it. Picked up one cheap on eBay and mine works perfectly.

Don't forget to claim £10 cash back for installing this - tado.com/gb-…als - I just used my name as the installer 'company' and the cheque came through in a week or so.

Fantastic things. If you want to add TRV’s to the system, its worth checking with your energy supplier to see if they offer discounts with Tado. Eg Octopus is 35% off
    Matholwch's avatar
Didn’t realise that! Makes TRVs £45.50 each (£70 RRP)

I bought it the other day. Same price. I intended to replace my ambient thermostat and use its online power on/off function until I am able to buy the 10 TRV we need. Bear in mind that this will not replace an ambient thermostat.
    XPL1C1T's avatar
Mine acts as an ambient thermostat
  7. inoxx's avatar
How noisy are TRVs for this system?
    MDog0101's avatar
Too many variables tbh. Will always be some level of noise due to it being metalwork but I’ve just replaced all mine and they are noticeably quieter than standard TRVs with manual operation.

The thing is with these you will notice the sound more as you’re not anticipating it like you do when adjusting a manual one.

I sleep less than a metre away from one and have no trouble. It’s adjusting all night too due to newborn.
  8. MDog0101's avatar
Always this price - nice deal though

I bought this a few months ago and it’s absolutely brilliant. I installed it myself for the central heating controls, but couldn’t figure out the hot water wiring as our connections are very complicated (system boiler with unvented cylinder).

The Tado app is very user friendly too.

The only downside here is that the TRVs are very expensive to purchase (£60+) so need to bear in mind if that’s what the long term aim is.
    IzOn's avatar
I’m not sure if you checked this but during installation, it asks for the brand (Honeywell etc). If you put your exact brand in it should give you the complete instructions. Whilst I was doing it I do remember there being a email you need to send for certain boilers to update the drivers.

Bear in mind if your boiler is opentherm compatible its prudent to go for the model that supports opentherm.
I have a Google Nest 3rd gen connected to my Viessmann boiler via opentherm which is a significant improvement over my previous on/off Honeywell thermostat.
    Vini's avatar
I think they all support opentherm, you just need to configure it correctly.

I say I think… mine did when I installed it 4 years ago and I doubt they’ve removed the option.

As you say beneficial to run this way if your boiler supports it
  11. Felipe.Lopes's avatar
Can I use this just to set a routine on Alexa to shutdown my Oil Filled Radiator that is connected to a TP-Link Kasa plug (also on Alexa) if the temp reaches 21C for example? My plan is not to connect any wire on it. I will just leave it in the same room as the radiator.
    Vini's avatar
You’re just looking to use the temperature reading as a trigger?

A cheaper way would be something like a hue motion sensor.

You’d then need a central solution like OpenHAB/homeassistant to handle the rules.

I do similar things with some fans on my server cabinet. If the temp goes above X degrees turn on, if it falls below X degrees turn off. (Hue motion sensor, hue plug socket & OpenHAB) (edited)

Pardon my ignorance. If I have nest thermostats for both floors and Tado radiator thermostats, why do I need this.
    LeebC's avatar
This one also does the hotwatwr if you have a system boiler but alot of people have combi so not needed
  13. rickinyorkshire's avatar
We have 2 separate thermostats, one for the living room only and one for the rest of the house. Any idea if this will somehow be able to control both?
    gsj87's avatar
I'm in the same position, think you'll need to replace both of the thermostats so you'll need two of these.
  14. OldGrump's avatar
It's been this price at Screwfix for couple of months now as i recently bought one for a relative, but still a great price and worth reposting
  15. harvey.atkins's avatar
They have done this deal in the past, but not very often. Great price!
    Big.A's avatar
its been this price for about 3 months
  16. SubaruWRX's avatar
Been that price for ages in black
  17. eddietoft's avatar
I bought one at this price too, easy to fit to my combi.

As a bonus it also interfaces with my home assistant smart home control, so opens up more options.
  18. Cool-breeze's avatar
Does anyone know if this is an easy switch if you already have a Hive system installed? I’ve given up on Hive TRVs ever working properly so interested in switching to a different system. This or Nest but wiring at the boiler end is my main fear. Anyone switched over?
  19. cRuNcHiE's avatar
Wish they would do away with needing to plug in another adapter to the router. The nest doesn’t need it
  20. CyptoHippy's avatar
I decided not to buy this because it doesn't have modulating features, my boiler is a Vaiillant Ecotech Pro 28 which can do modulation ramp up and down flow temperatures as needed and has weather compensation.

Tado removed the OpenTherm from this wireless unit in the UK I wouldn't recommend you buy this if you have a boiler that can modulate.

There is a EU version which has OpenTherm which I will be buying only sold directly by Tado (edited)

Got this last month for this price and got it professionally installed. I couldn’t believe the price difference between this and white one specially when the only difference is the controller is black.

I even asked the guy at Screwfix why it was cheaper (after buying it offcourse) but he couldn’t give me a reason.
    gary333's avatar
Screwfix price is just an introductory incentive. If you look on Tado it cost the same. It’ll get pushed in price once that ends. My guesstimate would be at some point in March (I.e. 6 months from launch)
  22. mattps's avatar
Purchased this, along with a wired add-on thermostat too. Haven't installed this version yet, but took my 20 minutes to swap my Danfoss TP5000 room themostat with the wired version yesterday. Brilliant app gives you step-by-step instructions for the install.
    gsj87's avatar
That's great, I've got the danfoss tp5000 too in my new build. Is it just the case of swapping around a few wires or is there more to it?
  23. pazzza1989's avatar
Find these things a minefield. Would this work with a hotwater tank & dual zone heating (upstairs, downstairs)?
    Nicolidus's avatar
I’m pretty sure it can’t handle dual zone, but worth checking with Tado
  24. aclarkesocial's avatar
Posted about this a while back but was told Screwfix was banned. Bought one myself about 6 months ago and ended up spending £200 on getting someone to install it because our system was a mess.

Don't buy if you're an OVO customer as there's a good chance you can get for free.

We are happy with it. It works well, especially as it controls hot water and heating separately.
    bluetba's avatar
Can you explain how you get it for free please? Thanks
  25. eddieglmr8105's avatar
Why so much more for the combination boiler option?
    gary333's avatar
    What do you mean?
  26. General_Chuddy's avatar
Bought and installed myself a couple months back...was easy and straightforward! Works brilliantly and has helped with the cold spells we have had recently. The convenience of setting the perfect temperature whenever you want from wherever (with the Tado app on your phone) is truly fantastic. The schedules work great and I have mine linked to Alexa so I can turn the radiators on or off via her. We'll worth the investment, highly recommend
  27. dmjar's avatar
How would you use this on a two zone system? Seems to be a few conflicting versions when doing a quick Google.

Do you need two of these full starter sets or just one of these and an additional wireless thermostat?
    mailandy2's avatar
We have two zones. Each zone is controlled by a thermostat that we fitted wired in to where our existing thermostats were.

I have a salus RT500RF wireless one. it has its own band so internet not needed but no integration with app. the controller sits on top of boiler (Valiant combi). Some queries - (1) has anybody done a change from salus or standalone to this one ? pls guide (2): what happens when you dont have internet ... does one use the smart thermostat to control ? (3) I have standard TRV - not smart ? it is worth spending £100 quid on this as seems from comments it will only add value when I convert the TRVs. On British gas so no discounts i assume
    MDog0101's avatar
I switched to just the Tado stat from a Salus IT500BM the previous houseowner had installed. Honestly Salus is crap. Whether or not just the stat is valuable to you depends on you. I eventualy added the 4 smart trvs (edited)

Sorry fr the dumb questions but would this system work on my setup?I have an oil fired boiler, radiators with normal valves with 1-5 markings and Honeywell home thermo?
  30. CMoon7's avatar
White version available via myself (brand new still sealed if anyone interested)?
    Ae82mad's avatar
    Interested. How much?
  31. snappyfish's avatar
So these literally allow you to control your heating via an app?
    Firefly1's avatar
Yes, but also room by room (assuming you have the radiator valves too). And then you can set a schedule for different times of the day and week. And a setting for when you are home versus away.
  32. SilverAnchovies's avatar
Installed this myself on a old Worcester boiler. Really easy and now hooked up to Alexa and can control remotely via tado app. Really useful as it shows historical temp and when heating is on with humidity. Recommend way cheaper than hive etc…
  33. DizzyDan1980's avatar
Was tempted by this and looking at the installation videos the thermostat itself looks like something I could easily install myself. Not sure I'd be able to install the part that controls the hot water though. Could I just install the thermostat on its own to control the heating and leave the hot water bit out and just have the hot water set on the boiler still?
  34. blizeH's avatar
Just a heads up that these are atrocious. Gutted we didn’t go for Nest in the new place
    Firefly1's avatar
    What's your issue(s) with them?
  35. Frank_the_tank's avatar
Fitted one of these to my Worcester Bosch. Fairly simple. Good app. Works well. Shame it requires a bridge. Netatmo one doesn’t but I hated that one.
  36. Geldof84's avatar
How much are the smart radiator valves for this?
  37. chocolategirlcg's avatar
I have a temperature setting on my combi boiler (one for heating and one for hot water) and a timer attached. No separate thermostat anywhere else in the house. Will this work for me? I read somewhere that I need an extension kit?
    Nicolidus's avatar
Yeah, the white box on the left will wire into your boiler and the black thermostat will work wirelessly and call for heat when you turn it on manually or scheduled.
  38. phantom123's avatar
Anyone know someone who can fit a wired version of these (with Opentherm connection). I'm in Lancashire. Thanks
    CyptoHippy's avatar
its straightforward only 2 wires for eBUS check youtube videos for HOW TO's

Beware of the following TADO UK version I bought the EU version with OpenTherm controls so my boiler can modulate up and down.

This is the UK Version without digital connections
