I’ve heard about the overheating on this phone, but does anyone know what it would be like just for viewing videos store on an SD card?

It’s one of view phones that support HDMI out so it’s useful as a portable media device. It’s also got the biggest screen out of all the other options, but if it’s going to overheat, I don’t want it.
    Thanks in advance.

Video playback fine. Only real issue is when recording in 4K or 4K 120 which is torture on any device anyway. Only other time I've felt it warm up is during initial setup.

Thank you @MrSwitch I missed out last time. Just need to decide if I wanna gamble on good vs very good now.....
Added: Looks like there is £30 via quidco too?!

And Quidco actually give you cashback unlike topcashback.... I had to fight for 6 months to get my MacBook cashback for them to say "It's BA points only".... Like where did it even say that? Cause it didn't when I bought it. Then I used it one more time and it didn't track that either..... So I just disabled my account.

I had bought this last time, shame I had to return it. The phone I received had such weak and slow mobile reception that it was almost unusable. Doing a speed test showed it was over half as slow as my Poco F3.

For what it's worth, I ordered Good, it arrived pristine. If it wasn't for the whole phone part being broken, it would have been great.

Purchased on the last deal but returned it. Couldn't get along with the extra tall and slim aspect ratio when viewing content. Although it is definitely worth the money for the spec. I liked the sd card expansion and headphone jack.

The last time I ordered this for £349 they actually gave a brand new phone.
Warranty only activated as soon as I set it up.
I remember ordering on the 6th of Jan and warranty was till 16th jan 2025 so I’d assume I set it up on the 16th.
  6. cramhead's avatar
I use one. 120Hz filming gets it hot but stuff like 5 min clips isn't a problem.
  7. BrianButterfield's avatar
I got the phone and it's like new but the camera app wont work with location settings turned off :/ Why would they do that? Also you cannot uninstall Facebook and all that stuff..... Wtf? Looking at XDA there are no good custom rooms for this phone to get rid of all the crap.

I'm just going to send it back, I've never used a phone that forced me to have a load of apps I do not want, not even the iPhone does that.

You cannot remove the search bar either... (edited)

TCB £35 has tracked also for what it's worth.
    telf's avatar
I got this the last time mrswitch gave this deal £349 I got £51 tcb and the phone looked brand new ,wanted the pixel pro 7 but so many bad reviews I left it and went for this
  9. gw3gon's avatar
I've used this phone to record 4k video in the 30 degree Thai sun and I have had no issues.
    S3XTÖY's avatar
It is madness hot in Thailand. If it can handle that then I will take one.
    Ordering one! Thanks!

How good is the camera for point and shoot? I know it's good if you go into the pro mode etc but I will never be bothered to fiddle about with the settings every time I take a picture.

I'm tempted at this price but Sony's software support is terrible - the previous flagships in this range have only received 2 years of OS updates, ridiculous for a £1k+ phone when even mid rangers from other manufacturers are offering 4 years (edited)
    zeb.mattey's avatar
I had the 1ii and the XS took much, much better point and shoot shots. The colours were way closer to reality on the iPhone.
  11. majorwedgy666's avatar
Shame it's never the smaller 5 iv on offer
  12. Jacques101's avatar
If it wasn't for the thermal issues and not as good battery life on the SD 8 this would be close to perfect. Heat for the price 🔥
    adoks4me's avatar
Bagged one last time it was listed and literally in mint condition. Yes, it does overheat after a few minutes of mostly 4k video but as a device it's performance is strong. Not a point and shoot camera but after a little patience getting some good results. Feels good in the hand. Their i v shall be a beast if they get it right but at this price-point worth a punt. You always have the option to return.
  13. ISHYYC's avatar
    Unreal price! 🔥🔥🔥
  14. face-crab's avatar
Got a 'good' last time around. Was pristine, not so much as a fingerprint. Not saying you'll get the same but perhaps worth a punt. I've also not seen the overheat warning once but I am in Scotland and it's winter, we'll see if there's issues in summer. Not sure it can be knocked at the price though. 4K screen is total overkill but can see it would be useful for editing on the go as can watch back footage in native res/refresh rate which I think is the point.

EDIT: I just wish Sony would use the best of their sensors in their own devices. I mean, they make the sensors in pretty much every smartphone but choose smaller, arguably worse sensors for their own flagship devices. Odd. (edited)

Holy....big hats off to you MrSwitchy. Absolute legend. nothings beats snagging a sweet deal first thing in the morning. I've been eyeing up this bad boy for some time now. HEEEAAAATTTTT. Quidco apparently give £40 cashback too, thanks for the heads up on that jt02392. Tis a good day folks. Queue music "walking on the moon"49677207-2fY54.jpg (edited)

49678420-zcj9N.jpgJobs a Good'in. fingers crossed for a near pristine phone.

3 years security updates at the full price is a bit tight though but ok at this price.

Wish this phone had dual nano SIM. Would've been an instant buy for me.
    Lee_Hammo's avatar
esim and nano for me gets around that

Just got mine, no factory stickers on the back but not a single scratch even on the ports. Still has 20 months warranty. So far seems like I have none of the usual issues (it does get toasty) so let's see how it goes over the next few days. I ordered Good.
  18. jt02392's avatar
My 'good' arrived, not a single mark on it. Warranty until Jan 2025 too - massive bonus!
    Massive kudos to @MrSwitch
  19. ukflyboy's avatar
My grade Good (C) has arrived and it is absolutely pristine condition. Doesn't look like it has ever been used! Will do a battery test later.
    ukflyboy's avatar
Reckon I'm up to my 9th update already...
  20. ASTONDB9's avatar
    My very good arrived today
    Its looks new
    Thank you MrSwitch

So far no issues with getting hot or the fingerprint scanner
Only issues is I cannot seem to transfer SMS and call log from old samsung s9 phone. Apps, photos, contacts, videos have all transferred
    Tonycv51's avatar
We now got 2 of these in our household at £349. No issues transfering SMS on either but neither previous phone was Samsung. Did you do it wired or bluetooth ? I couldn't get wired to work I.e. USB c to USB c so had to use slow Bluetooth method but it did work

I assume you did do full Google back up first including calls and SMS ? (edited)

My 'Good' Xperia arrived in mint condition. Couldn't find a scratch. Warranty lasts until Nov 2024 too! Love the screen, still getting used to the large size as I moved over from Xperia 5
    kshade's avatar
My "good" also arrived today super happy with condition no scatches 😄 first sony phone so gotta learn everything again lol

Yes they're refurbished but still at great prices ♨️

These probably all the returns from last time round - returned mine as screen had significant scratches
  25. Lloydinio's avatar
    Scorching.

Really wish the 3 was this price last year. I have wanted this series of phone for ages but last year I moved to iPhone and probably won’t move back 🥲
  26. scoutnetworker2020's avatar
Got one of these last time, love this phone so much, had no problems at all and on the warranty check i had 22 months!
    telf's avatar
Same here, did you get the £51 topcashback after (edited)
  27. mikeyjai's avatar
Oh I bought the last Good thanks to Switchy
    telf's avatar
Good luck mine turned up pristine not a mark on it
  28. Mixu1967's avatar
Missed out last time, was going to try hold out for Xperia 5iv but at £349 couldn't say no to this deal. Fingers crossed it turns out pristine like a lot of other people 😁🤞 Thanks Switchy!
    coldo's avatar
Yes I would prefer the size of the 5 iv This just seems a tad too long for my trousers pockets ! 🤪
  29. Greg.'s avatar
It's a neat phone and this is a great price. My good was pristine with good remaining warranty. Only annoyance is the camera takes a lot of getting used to - I've now become an Adobe Lightroom user
  30. Beat_Takashi's avatar
Just got mine, as good as new. Thanks @MrSwitch will be a great clutch pocket camera when I dont want to lug around my A7R3 and just a great phone to replace my old Poco F2. Winning
    Tonycv51's avatar
It may be lazy but I wish it had SCN in the camera options
  31. pxh's avatar
My good condition phone also arrived in seemingly unused condition. Can't say much more at the moment, as it's going to take at least two and a half hours to copy my data over.

Might take a few days to get used to the screen dimensions, though.
  32. HAZZMISTER's avatar
My very good arrived fine and no signs of use. I’m struggling to use the camera in low light environments - guess I need to have a play around. It’s definitely a lot different to point and shooting on iPhones and pixels etc
    Mushstaffy's avatar
Exactly my experience today, well lit video and photos looked much better than my s21, but awful noise in lower light.. I'm going to have more of a play tomorrow
  33. Super_Hanz's avatar
My good arrived, mint condition warranty until September 2014 but gets red hot
    ukflyboy's avatar
Where do you see the warranty length? Have registered it with Sony but still can't see it!

Edit - see there is a separate warranty checker; May 24 will do! (edited)
  34. v5535's avatar
Not useable in high resolution mode like 1i
  35. laccc's avatar
Here we go again I am still very happy with the phone, apart of the fingerprint scanner, that's terrible.
    Gamebear88's avatar
I've heard some people have issues while others don't, I'm assuming you've tried adding the same finger twice? I do that now on any device I have. May be worth a shot
  36. tharsen's avatar
Got this last time, pulled the trigger on the very good and turned out to be pristine, could not tell what the issue was with the phone so was very happy, use it as a camera display as well

Thanks, gone for it. Got a P30 Pro with a properly mashed up screen that needs replaced and was holding out for something with SD card, 5G and WiFi 6; I thought that was looking like a he A54 when it released but this looks like a better bet! Thanks for posting.
