UPDATE.

Mine and someone else's on this thread came factory sealed, brand new (that doesn't mean yours will but still ...).

After 15 years this beast has bought me back to MAC. Yes. Yes. You can build a PC for a lot less (I did twice).

Anyway this a cracking price due to the Studios being upgraded in the latest announcements by Apple. CEX are selling second hand Studios for £1,785.00 and they are not Apple Certified. Otherwise next best seems to be new from The Box for £1880.00.

Anyone suggesting to buy the updated version, well you are unlikely to notice any real world difference.

CORRECTION. You can get a B Grade MAC Studio from CEX for £1640. It comes with 2 years warranty that is better than APPLE. So worth considering imho. I prefer to buy direct from MAC A grade.

If you're buying this system, definitely do get it from Apple and not CEX - no idea why someone would have bought one then chopped it in to CEX so soon, just seems mildly suspicious, refurbished from Apple is like new whereas CEX is a gamble. Still expensive - but if you need it, you know you need it.

Indeed. I'd been toying with buying this model on ebay to save some money but even the second hand used ones seem to go for 1500-1600, so this Apple refurbished with 1 year limited warranty is definitely a better bet.

Could make for an amazing gaming machine especially with the recent developments.
    Incognitoso's avatar
Forget about games and do not look this side anymore if you buy this mac
I have M1 max and crosover or parralels gaming is like playing games from era xbox 360

PS5 for £400 will be 100 Times better for games then this nice alum box for games + will be cheaper as well £400 + 55 Oled £1000 = £1400 pure PS5 gaming with they titles

512GB Storage is going to be limiting. Also its 2022 model meaning you will run out of OSX update sooner then 2023 models. I would invest more and buy 2023 models.

Install open core if you’re worried about not being able to run the latest OS when it’s eventually considered a legacy device. My 2013 MBP is still going strong 💪 and is just received the latest OS security update. (edited)

Also hoping you don't get stopped randomly by customs as that is effectively smuggling to evade the sales tax! Random checks aren't unheard of - easy to explain a phone or tablet but a computer might be a bit harder to sell.

So it arrived packaged like it's brand new and honestly I would have no idea that it isn't brand new.
    duckrabbit76's avatar

I fact I think it is brand new. The packaging is factory sealed. Maybe APPLE are moving stock of the old model as they are only now selling the new one on their website.

Would not recommend. Not a good machine. Bought one of these new at beginning of year. Performance was not very good. Thought I’d even try WoW on it to see how it handled it and simple answer was it didn’t. Very low fps and graphics quality. Then there’s the constant whining noise that existed from 1st switch on that never went away. Returned for refund after a week, very disappointed. Bought a Mac mini instead and not bothering with WoW. (edited)

Anyone using this as HtPC? My NUC struggles with 4k streams and due an upgrade.

    This flies through 4k transcodes

Just arrived. Can't wait to set it up but need to finish off some projects first before I switch. At least it gives time for amazon to ship the wall mount I ordered.

Everyone commenting on 'only' 512gb storage I'm guessing you don't do pro work? Even the £20,000 Dell and HP Workstations we had for editing back in the day didn't come with much internal storage. You work with external drives. As long as there's enough space to install the programs you use, you're good.

Yes, Apple SSD storage expensive but you don't have to buy it. I've been buying Mac's since 2007 and this internal 512GB will be the most internal storage I've ever had. I usually have 256GB (edited)
    jimborae's avatar
A simple Thunderbolt 3 external enclosure with a 2 TB PCI-E NVME drive inside means I have all the disc space I need for my current Mac Mini.

I also have a WD D50 Thunderbolt hub with another 2TB and that gives me loads of ports as well as another 2TB storage. (edited)
  11. stanno's avatar
I think I'll bite. CPU and RAM is fine for my needs for the foreseeable future and using an external HD is not really a big deal for a desktop (I agree that 1/2 TB is ridiculous these days though but that's Apple for you!)

Mine arrives this afternoon. Hopefully all will be in order!

I put off buying one of these for a long time, waiting for the rumoured Mac Mini Pro release, which promised a higher spec for a lower price. But when they were finally released and you compared spec for spec (including monitor support and ports in general), the studio still gives more bang for buck. With this discount it becomes a no-brainer. (edited)
  13. DingoDirk's avatar
512GB of storage for this price is a disgusting insult. As much as I like Apple, this is a case of a fool and his money. Buying these substandard specification products - substandard because Apple wants to eek every Penny of profit out of an already ridiculous profit margin - is just reinforcing this nonsense.

That said, and apart from the stupidly limiting storage, this is a beautiful computer. (edited)
    plewis00's avatar
I guess they expect you to use external drives hanging off one of the many ports, which does mostly solve the issue, though agree, at this price it really should be 1TB baseline.

Another reason for me getting this model is it comes with OS Monterey, which is less fussy about installing some 3rd-party software than Ventura. Apple "security" is getting pretty restrictive. I presume newer models won't allow backward compatibility with Monterey,

EDIT: Actually it had Ventura installed so I'm in the process of downgrading to Monterey. That's what I have on my M1 Macbook and I like to keep them in tandem (edited)
    Incognitoso's avatar
Soon or later you will need to move to new OS
Menterey you left with another Year for security updates
No chance to win again apple they control your mac they can disable mac etc
When I have reinstalled Ventura from new I need to activate mac so in theory apple can so NO and then i will be left with scrap metal .
Windows do not have these things do what you want With apple silicon you locked to apple
Plus all parts like monitor or other replacable parts is locked by serial no so

Anyone who is interested you can get the updated model on the student store for £1,889.00.

I could have gone for this but honestly in real world tests there was no benefits to the upgrade. If I was going to spend more I would rather have gone for the old model with more storage.
    iamdamien's avatar
I bought previous gen with upgraded GPU and 2TB internal drive about 2 months ago. The minor power increase probably won't make a huge difference with my daily video editing workflow.

Still...annoyed I couldn't hold on a little longer just for the latest. Ah well. Still an incredible machine for anyone doing creative work.
  16. Maples's avatar
Honestly, the small design of this and the power it packs is so good. If I wasn't someone who used a MB, I'd be getting this.

CeX warranty is not better than Apple !

64GB option for £2k is very tempting to be able to run big LLMs locally, there isn’t a better ML workstation at that price.
    foo.bar's avatar
Again its only with 512GB SSD . I just dont understand the point of offering this low spec. ssd on this machine. Surely this is sales/marketing/pricing c0ckup at Apple.
  20. jimborae's avatar
This deal needs unexpiring as they have more stock, I've just bought one.
  21. jimborae's avatar
Hope that I've made the right decision in getting the M1 Max rather than the M2 Max though. Really dont need all the increased power of the M2 Max and the saving on this was too much to ignore. Also you can get a possible further £25 off via TopCashback. So final price will be £1584 for me with any luck if it tracks. (edited)

I think you'll start to see some real world comparisons and the difference will be minimal. They certianly are for M1 and M2 pro in Macbooks but I could be wrong.
  22. CMB76's avatar
There's like 15-20% Difference.. the M1 Max at £1600 is definitely the sweet spot. Spending another £3500 for the maxed out M2 Ultra gets you at best 75% faster CPU and 100% faster GPU. If you have the very specific programs and use case that push the system to to the max.. otherwise the performance difference is back to 15-20%.

The way I see it is I went from a base M1 Air to an M1 Max for £1600 and increased the speed of my work floe by 4x-5x. Spending £3500 more would have gotten the M2 Ultra and been 75% faster.. I can live with that.. Makes much more sense to wait it out and get an M3 Ultra or M4 Max for another big performance jump per price.

Unless you happen to need every ounce of speed you can get for your work.. in which case money is no object and you're not hanging out at Hot UK Deals. (edited)

Just to add in case you're curious. Mine wasn't new stock as others have mentioned. It was in a Mac Studio box and wrapped and everything and looked exactly like brand new stock.. but clearly says in small writing on the bottom front of the box *Apple Certified Refurbished*. (edited)

Should be able to run crysis easily

I was considering this. They also have the m2 mini pro for £1189 but I’m concerned it won’t drive my dual mateview 4k and 49 ultra wide setup.

Yeah I looked into this as well. That's a lot cheaper. My main software is DaVinci Resolve and M1 M2 Pro chips are all running it very well. But that is a lot of screen to cover! You could always return.

50330500-Hahbd.jpgI wouldn't mind, but I'm opening this in Safari on the iPhone!

I had the same problem on Safari (latest version!). Just went straight to the UK Applestore which worked fine.

How would the M2 Pro stack up against this. They have that for £1189 on refurb. I use for web design, photoshop illustrator etc. no video editing. Any ideas?
    cabstar's avatar
I use one for Lightroom and it flies.
  28. Paul_Hobbs07's avatar
I’m guessing for a simple photography workflow there is not much point to this over a Mac mini with an m2 pro? I’ve been waiting for the back to school campaign to kick in

How’s the noise at idle? Any coil whine or is the idle fan speed audible? (edited)
    deleted2777416's avatar
I had a permanent coil whine noise on my brand new one from setup. It’s very annoying so I sent it back. It’s a common fault with the Mac Studio.

When will Apple support Nvidia! Or when will unreal engine support Apple like it does with Nvidia!
