I purchased this a few weeks ago, mostly because we were having issues with not clearly hearing dialogue in some shows (which is partly down to speakers on our TV, but I also do think there is too much ambient noise/music in shows these days .. isn't the dialogue the most important bit, Mr/Ms Director?).

Anyway .. while watching via the Apps on the soundbar and using the specific "audio/voice" improving setting on the Roku it's better/clearer. However, if you watch an App via your TV, and just use the soundbar for "audio only" then there doesn't seem to be a way to enable that same setting. What this means is that essentially you're kinda forced to use the App on the Roku and not the TV (or indeed any App), which is a shame. And then for anything that isn't an "App" (i.e. a channel on our Virgin box) you don't get the dialogue enhancement option.

That wasn't clear to me when I made the purchase, and so I'm a little disappointed. Is it better than TV speakers? Yes. Is it as good as I thought it would be? No. Solid 3/5 for me, but nothing more.

(I have never used any other soundbar, so I unfortunately cannot compare with anything else).

If you have the Roku app on your phone, you can change the audio settings, even if you're not using the Roku UI on the device itself. So I can stream media from my Fire TV stick, or just audio from Live TV (via ARC on my TV) and change the audio 'sound mode' on the fly via the Roku phone app - whilst the media is playing...

In effect, this allows you to enable/disable audio processing on audio which is being received via ARC from another source - no need to use the apps directly on the Roku device itself. I'm guessing it's the same if the audio is coming in via the optical connection - but since I don't use this in my setup I can't be sure.

Had no idea this was a thing - seems pretty cool especially for the price it's going at! Bit of a shame there's no Ethernet port, though I imagine most people don't fuss over it nowadays.
    fauxdigger's avatar
Apparently you can use the usb socket on the back to connect to certain ethernet port adapters.

I've not tried it myself but it's documented in the instructions and mentioned on the Roku community forum:

My aging parents got this about a month ago as they were struggling to hear voices on their old Sony flat telly.

They could not be happier. The sound is very clear. Does a good job with music/ambient sounds too. (edited)

I bought one of these the last time it dropped to £59.99 recently. Pleasantly surprised by its size and quality - a definite improvement on the built in TV speakers (as you would expect). I bought it more for its soundbar features, rather than the streaming features - the Roku UI is *very* basic - my TV has ARC support, so I still use my FireTV stick for streaming and use the soundbar to play any audio from my TV. Would I have bought it at the RRP of £129.99 - or even £99 that it seems to regularly drop to.....maaaaaaaybe... but at £59.99 I'm very pleased.

There are more features on the Roku app including a way to resolve A/V sync issues.

For some balance I would give the Roku Streambar a 3 out of 5. We've had one for a couple of years now, mainly for the soundbar features. I find the sound ok but it still does not provide us with the clear voice experience we were hoping for. On a lot of movies it is still a bit muffled. Consequently we only use it for the occasional movie but still with subtitles.

Another annoying feature for us is there is no way to shut off the sound completely - we have to unplug it. So even with the ARC CECe hdmi port you can switch between internal and external speakers (we use an LG Oled), next time we turn the TV on we get the booming soundbar even though we have previously reverted back to internal speakers. Not sure if ours is defective or a design flaw.
    CatsWithThumbs's avatar
I don't think it's a defect or flaw with the soundbar; possibly a design flaw or feature with the TV though. I don't have this soundbar but I have Sonos Beam connected to my LG TV and have the same issue in that if I switch the TV back to internal speakers, after a few seconds it "sees" the Beam connected and switches back to it. (I haven't tried with any other TVs)

I think the solution is to turn off the HDMI CEC (I think it's called Simplink on LG) which will then require you to switch to and from the soundbar manually, although that may prove more irrirating.

brilliant little sound bar had one for over a year in the gym. one thing to be mindful of, if you're a big youtube watcher the ads on this thing are ridiculous! literally 4 or 5 mid vid ads per 10min video. Roku have their own youtube ad policy by the looks of it and it makes youtube unwatchable without premium, no way you can install an ad free version of youtube either!
    Pingu_NOOTNOOTMF's avatar
Tbh I pay for premium because YouTube is worth it over any other video based website. The fact it has good stuff for all ages and you get YouTube music with it is a no brainer. I'll happily pay to watch my documtries /food vlogs/reviews/tech/gaming/my son's stuff/ my daughter stuff type of videos. Ain't seen a ad for a while. And while I use to use Vanced etc, I could never watch it on the big screen and the fact you get a 2 for 1 service with premium. Best service out there when comparing the prices to rubbish like netflix(even though it has a few good shows) (edited)

I bought one of these to replace my Firestick a week or 2 ago. In my opinion, the remote isnt as good. Unlike the firstick remote, you have to point it in the general direction of the box. As a speaker, its a HUGE upgrade on what I had and worth it for that alone. Which is what I only use it as now.
    drivel's avatar
You may probably not have paired the remote to the streambar, and it's only receiving the backup infrared commands from the remote rather than the actual radio frequency commands.

It's great for sound... however it sucks with Apple TV. The app constantly stutters and ruins everything. All other apps are fine just Apple TV. Googled it and it's a known problem not just with the Streambar but across other Roku devices. I've even bought an 8K HDMI which didn't make a difference.

I just use the Firestick, Apple TV (the box) or the Samsung Apple TV app to watch with the sound coming out through the Streambar.

Just be aware if you're planning on buying for watching your Apple content.

These are excellent. Bought ours when they were on offer recently or great sound and I really like the Roku interface.
  14. Casperuk82's avatar
I've had one for these for a while now. Since they were £99.

The thing that annoys me the most is there isn't enough bass in them. You can buy a sub for this. But only if you are in the US. Roku seem to dislike every other market when it comes to releasing their products.

Other than that. It's a massive improvement over built in TV speakers. And it's now cheap enough to have more then one.

Brilliant little soundbars. I have one in my living room and love it. Does more than enough to enhance audio for the PS5 or when streaming movies
  18. tellyt's avatar
Can this replace your TV speakers completely? ie, it powers on/off with the TV and you can use the TV remote to change the volume (using HDMI). (edited)
    cp1's avatar
Yes, as long as the TV hdmi port has ARC CEC. We mainly stream and only have to use the Roku remote, no other remotes involved. The Roku remote does volume. (edited)

can you get IPTV sideloading on these?
    deleted2808586's avatar
    No unfortunately not
  20. Supafez's avatar
I've bought this purely for its soundbar features. Have it in the living room. I think it's great. Very clear with good balance. There's also some bass as well. The compact size is also very handy.

Anyone had 'quiet' music in films /TV when streaming though this? It seems to be a 5.1 downscale issue where the music should also be through the rears. It shows up on films like Thor Ragnarok, Top Gun Maverick etc. When the music should be blasting out. Roku forum has that it has been an issue for some time. (edited)

Don't forget TCB and Airtime Rewards.
You also get 3 months Apple TV+ with these.
Got one last time for my daughter's flat. Very impressed with the interface, apps, and especially the sound quality 👌
    Heat added 🔥
    deleted2808586's avatar
How do you get the 3 months Apple+ is there a code in the box?
