San Francisco is so much nicer than LA. My advice, make it a road trip and pick a hire car up at LAX and cruise highway one up to San Fran (Santa Barbara, Pismo, the big sur, Carmel, Monterey all nice stop offs along the way). Few days in San Fran and a few days in Yosemite before drive back through Sequoia, Death Valley to LA. Vegas is doable too if you are able to push it out a few more nights.

This is sort of our plan. We are going the other way as we have been to San Fran and fancy going to San Diego, Grand Canyon, Vegas and then a little more time in LA/other surrounding places. I didnt think car hire was too bad, around £500 for the 13 nights.

Any money saved on flights will be eaten up quickly by the cost of the US these days, and the conversion of the Great British Peso.

US used to be reasonable, but now extraordinarily expensive.

Depends what you're doing. Road trip with camping in national parks is still dirt cheap. Doing it in July. If you're off to queue for rides at Disney all day then yeah it will be very expensive.

LAX is a great place to start a road trip as well, and the weather in April will be perfect for some of the parks in the southwest. LA itself is a dump. Last year I flew in there, picked up my car and immediately headed east out of there.

California has become ridiculously expensive in recent years, specially that now after brexit the exchange rates for dollars is not good at all , everything is much cheaper here ,, years ago i would always return from my trips to LA with my luggage full of trainers and other items of clothing bought there because of all the savings but not anymore so i don't bother visiting the shops when i'm there now .. the restaurants used to always expect to leave a 15% gratuity but now on top of this they are adding 10% service charge which is outrageous ! the only fast food eateries still worth visiting there now is In-N-out burger place with minimal price increases with freshly made burgers and fries .. and the service on BA flights is non existent if you are sitting anywhere below or behind upper economy ( mind you they did upgrade me once to business class free of charge because my seat was broken) .. but as others have said California is a lovely place to visit as long as you do your homework before you travel

I know this might not be for everyone but if you are looking now and considering adding checked baggage read on ...

I booked BA flights initially on the Airbus 350 (operated by BA) and did it with no checked luggage and decided to add it later as I wouldn't need 4 cases for 10 days, maybe only 2. Anyway, after completing I then realised you can't get free seats until check in, the cheapest to select now would be £38 each going up to £90+ for extra legroom. The extra bags for 2 are £55 each way so I am looking at £500 extra for checked bags and seats, taking the total price to £2100 (still not too bad). Also the Airbus 350 seat config is 3 3 3 in economy and for 4 people that's not the best for seating close by.

You get 24 hours to cancel even with economy from BA so this is what I did and I rebooked with American Airlines directly.

The American Airlines Boeing 777 is a 3 4 3 seating config in economy so you are tightly packed in BUT for me and my lot having 4 together is more appealing as the kids can be managed by both of us.

Upgrading to Main Cabin in the American Airlines process meant we got 1 x 23kg checked bag each way per person AND American let you reserve your seats FREE at time of booking - this option is not available on BA without paying (unless you are within 24 hours of flight time). With AA you don't get to choose the preferred seats but we still had a few options and now peace of mind we have booked seats together.

This was a little more of course but compared to BA checked bag option only which is £100 per person during booking the ticket price for 4 of us came out exactly the same at £1957.

So by booking AA direct I managed to get to choose my seats all together at booking rather than wait with BA.

Hope this helps someone. Hopefully it makes sense (edited)

We did this with family couple of years ago and it was hands down THE WORST trip of all time, and we're quite regular travellers. Some of the problems you're faced with are dangerously horrible traffic, homeless people everywhere, drug peddlers, high crime that you don't feel safe out and about with kids, bulk produced unhealthy fastfood everywhere and then LA being a historic industrial place with not much to do and see for families at least. We drove out to other cities in California and I'd say USA is massively overrated with very poor value especially their cities. LA isn't designed to either walk or have easy public transport. The only thing I'd recommend is to drive out to countryside, nature parks, canyons etc but then you've got a lot of that within Europe specially in Nordics, Highlands etc with exception of the canyons of course. I know geographically it's not like for like comparison but places above are nothing less than what USA has on offer for nature lovers.
Flights to LA were cheap for a reason but the trip wasn't cheap after all especially during Easter weeks. (edited)

We had 3 nights in LA and enjoyed Universal studios free bus from hotel and loved Hollywood and free bus from there to Griffiths park and free observatory. Did prefer SF though saw more homeless there. Lots to do and Vegas was brilliant.

I bet all the pals moaning about high prices are planning to book their holidays somewhere in USA. Stop complaining Do you think UK and Europe are cheaper? I don't think so. Plus, Europe you visit it few times it becomes boring. US has a different feeling (edited)

Check car rental prices out, they were 2-3 times more expensive than pre pandemic when I checked at the start of the year.

Went in Jan 2022 to SF, LA and Vegas. Flights were a great price then but expensive taxis, meals and attractions. All worth it though. This is a great price.

If booking this. Check the offers they then give you for car hire. We flew around 5 years ago and got 2 weeks hire of a big suv got around £300/400 for 2 weeks and it’s was around 50-60% cheaper then anywhere else.

Loads of great places in LA and surrounding areas to visit despite what others say, you just need to do some research. Also can drive down the coast through Laguna and Oceanside to San Diego or up through Malibu to San Francisco. There’s trains and buses which we’ve used and internal flights are cheaper. Like everywhere the cost of things has shot up there; possibly more than most, so bear that in mind if you go

Fly to LA ...immediately leave via quickest route down south, North or East....just somewhere!

wanted to say thank you. We've decided to jump on board as well.
Loose itinerary is to spend first 3 nights in LA, Hollywood sightseeing, Universal Studios etc. Down to San Diego for a couple of days. Then over to Vegas for 2/3 days before heading home. I've not been to California / Nevada since I got married 17 years ago so this will be lovely (edited)

Can fly to LAX/some of its neighbouring airports with one stop for less btw, just a minor inconvenience with the stops.

If you do fly on the A380 plane then try and get an upper deck window seat if available , they are more spacious and also you have a small compartment to yourself you can put things inside or on top ! sometimes when you check in on line 24 hours prior to flight they are still available and you don't have to pay extra ! try it as soon as the check in is open

british airways is great. they never check your cabin luggage, so I always bring 3 cabin trolleys onboard.
