sorted byUS used to be reasonable, but now extraordinarily expensive.
LAX is a great place to start a road trip as well, and the weather in April will be perfect for some of the parks in the southwest. LA itself is a dump. Last year I flew in there, picked up my car and immediately headed east out of there.
I booked BA flights initially on the Airbus 350 (operated by BA) and did it with no checked luggage and decided to add it later as I wouldn't need 4 cases for 10 days, maybe only 2. Anyway, after completing I then realised you can't get free seats until check in, the cheapest to select now would be £38 each going up to £90+ for extra legroom. The extra bags for 2 are £55 each way so I am looking at £500 extra for checked bags and seats, taking the total price to £2100 (still not too bad). Also the Airbus 350 seat config is 3 3 3 in economy and for 4 people that's not the best for seating close by.
You get 24 hours to cancel even with economy from BA so this is what I did and I rebooked with American Airlines directly.
The American Airlines Boeing 777 is a 3 4 3 seating config in economy so you are tightly packed in BUT for me and my lot having 4 together is more appealing as the kids can be managed by both of us.
Upgrading to Main Cabin in the American Airlines process meant we got 1 x 23kg checked bag each way per person AND American let you reserve your seats FREE at time of booking - this option is not available on BA without paying (unless you are within 24 hours of flight time). With AA you don't get to choose the preferred seats but we still had a few options and now peace of mind we have booked seats together.
This was a little more of course but compared to BA checked bag option only which is £100 per person during booking the ticket price for 4 of us came out exactly the same at £1957.
So by booking AA direct I managed to get to choose my seats all together at booking rather than wait with BA.
Hope this helps someone. Hopefully it makes sense (edited)
Flights to LA were cheap for a reason but the trip wasn't cheap after all especially during Easter weeks. (edited)
Loose itinerary is to spend first 3 nights in LA, Hollywood sightseeing, Universal Studios etc. Down to San Diego for a couple of days. Then over to Vegas for 2/3 days before heading home. I've not been to California / Nevada since I got married 17 years ago so this will be lovely (edited)
