Get there an hour before opening, as I believe that's when the monorail starts to take you to the entrance. Once in the park head for the Forbidden Forest (not sure it's called that) which is quite faraway. We got on Rita, 13 and other rides in that area about four times in the first hour. Then head over to Nemesis and Oblivion. Most people don't get there early enough, then head for the rides nearest the entrance, like Wicker Man. We managed to ride Smiler about four times in the last hour that the park was open. You can get on plenty of rides if you plan it correctly.
Also I believe that if you enter a queue a few minutes before closing, then you get to stay in that queue till you get on the ride (or at least it use to be the case)

Bra. Nemesis is closed. Having a refurbished. Looks good as I saw the track in the car park.

I'd only ever go to Alton Towers during the week while kids are still at school. Weekends / bank holidays / half term and you'll barely get on any good rides. Even an 'efficient' route round the park with fastrack has you waiting almost 45 min on some rides if you're unlucky

I've bought this. Says anytime ticket, but when you try and book it says £6 upgrade charge for every weekend/bank holiday and summer holiday.

Spoke to live chat they said the anytime only covers quiet days. So put in a complaint

Thats so sneaky, I placed an order and read ur message later they didn't mention an extra charge in the description

Would you recommend fast pass for Alton t
    pcmustard's avatar
I did and would recommend, we went in June for 3 days and even outside of school holidays the thrill rides were 60min+. There were a few end of summer school trips though (edited)

Went recently (Just before half term), over 2 hour wait for most thrill rides. Rides breaking down all day, managed two rides from 10am to 5:30pm. Gave us free tickets to go again as a sorry, no thanks!

We were in a similar position. 4 rides in the entire day. Even the cable cars broke down.
Very annoying with kids considering the price you pay!

Son went yesterday. Rides kept breaking after queuing for hours. He only went on one big ride and a couple of smaller ones. It's been happening for the past month. They need to get this sorted.

No way, I was there yesterday too. It was an absolute disgrace. ( no sky ride or hex since the start of the season.) I heard another school kid group manage 1 ride before they got called back to there coach.

The queue times are so bad and unreliable that they removed these from the app so you can only view them once you're in the park.

Avoid during any summer periods. 180+ minutes for rides yesterday, all constantly going down, (only running at 60% capacity too). Awful service, expensive food.
(Also their safeguarding/ security is awful, I've had to report something to a third party because Alton Towers refused to make a complaint/ do any paperwork. )

Please don't waste your money for the summer period. (March - June is the best quietest time for the park.)

The queue times for these theme parks are ridiculous. They surely need to limit the amount of people allowed in 1 day to reduce this because its putting me off going to theme parks. Last time i went thorpe park i sat on 3 rides all day and i left when it closed. Money grabbing concept no thought of the customer

Can't remember what we paid from the cereal buy 1 get one free offer.
Didn't pay the extra fast pass, as others mentioned try plan to go when kids are not off school.
The park opened earlier than advertised so go as early as you can as the standard car park (chargeable) need monorail to get to park entrance and further queue to enter. Arriving early head to your must go rides first as wait time in early morning tends to be less ppl.
Bring water bottle where possible save time and money. Possibly some snacks when queueing. Waterproof wear if going on water ride

Went last august at peak time. Stayed at local travelodge in Ashbourne and got to the park 1hr before the rides opened. You can get in before rides open so Went straight to smiler and was on third ride once it started and then managed another 2 rides that were near within same hour. Think we done 9 rides on the first day and 7 the second, all of which were all the large thrill rides. It really does take some organising and working out quickest route to each area of the park if the app is working which shows wait times. Like many have said on here, there’s many times the rides aren’t working for a long period of time. Think we were lucky but did bring back memories of the park as went in mid 80’s (edited)

2nd week of September has also been our favourite time to go, all the UKs schools are in and very few doing trips that time of year, never had to queue for any single ride for several years when have visited this way, we once did 50 smilers in a row lol
    Pinksparkles1973's avatar
Jeez I feel like me head's gonna fall off and I can't walk in a straight line afterwards just goin on it the once.... how are you not dead, or at least severely brain damaged from 50 in a row!!

Would be a decent theme park if open till late at peak times. Going during summer and waiting 90 minutes for the decent rides plus the breakdowns means it's hard to get an enjoyable day out of it

Agreed, i went out of season fairly recently. On a weekday, The amount of time ride went down, then went up…. and back down was a joke.
managed to get through some of the rides atleast twice, but its not worth it to go alton towers. They stopped people going into certain rides 45mins before closing, even the ones with lines that werent that long.

I went 2 weeks ago got on 3 rides . 3 hours for smiler . They we're letting on 2 fast passes to 1 queuing person .
Think about it the bigger the queues the more people that will buy fast track passes and more money for them . They just don't care about the customer just money . It really should be free entry

Wow cheaper than Blackpool that was posted yesterday

My son went with his school and he was so disappointed he said he wouldn't go even if they paid him. Only got to go on three rides all day and it was very annoying getting to the front of the q just to be told the ride was closing.
Don't bother you'll be so disappointed

Waste of time going since they ditched single rider queues.

we were there on this monday, tons of kids, managed to go on smiley first things first, then on the spinning pinball thingy. Then we bought the 6 ride fastpass and managed to sit on that 6

Used to go several times a year growing up in Derby but it’s got worse and worse value over the years and can’t justify paying the price for the family now. Was when they started charging for parking too, in the middle of nowhere, rural Staffordshire, that they really started taking the mick. The wife’s American and their parks open early and close late. She couldn’t believe it was 10-5 for the price paid when she first went.

Went this week, 3 hour queue for The Smiler...advertised at 90 mins, they really need to be honest as my son need the loo after 2 hours and had a right palaver to get him sorted and get back to out place in the queue...
