Details

The ideal gravel adventure bike for all-terrain riding, the Vitus Substance VRS-1 HT Gravel Bike (Apex) features a strong and lightweight aluminium frame, RockShox suspension forks and a SRAM Apex 1-11-Speed groupset with hydraulic disc brakes.

The Substance VRS-1 HT features a strong and lightweight aluminium frame that is equipped with RockShox suspension forks, a SRAM Apex 11-Speed groupset, hydraulic disc brakes and a Brand-X Ascend dropper seatpost. Offering exceptional traction, stability and control for riding across all terrains, this bike is a superb bike for rapid off-road trail sessions and gravel racing.

Agile, Efficient and Stylish Gravel Road Bike
The Vitus Substance loads your ride with freedom and choice. It expands your world, opening up new possibilities to ride and explore where otherwise you might not have looked. Unshackled from the same old routes, each ride reveals new ways ahead, like a fresh map - that bridleway to who-knows-where, the gravel track through the woods or the rougher shortcut that you know is quicker but that other bikes couldn’t handle. See, in a world obsessed with pace, sometimes we need to focus on the place, the journey and the fun that comes from a bike with the capability to seek out routes that others would avoid.

RockShox Rudy Suspension and SRAM Apex 11-Speed Groupset
Whether embarking on a high-adrenaline gravel race or simply staying light for a mixed-terrain local loop, the Substance VRS-1 HT is capable of adapting to suit your ride, more so than ever before. At its core, a double-butted aluminium frame and RockShox suspension fork are tuned for comfort on long days and across varied surfaces. Aided by big volume tyres that soften the bumps and add traction over rutted or loose tracks, the build also includes a dropper post for maximum freedom of movement on the steepest terrain.

With compatibility for 1X or 2X drivetrains and either 700c or 650b wheels, you can really fine-tune the setup to best fit where you are riding. And if ultra-racing or multi-day expeditions are your thing, the frame has mounts for luggage, waterbottles and mudguards. For those remote rides where water, food and spares might be hard to come by, you can always load up with whatever you need to reach the next supply point.

Strong, Lightweight and Versatile Gravel Bike
This isn’t simply about the same cliches of getting off the beaten track or going in search of the road less travelled, because the Substance is more than a gravel race bike. It broadens your horizons, delivering richer experiences and powerful lasting memories. It’s a bike that enables you to do more. It’s a bike that gives you options. The Substance empowers a new mindset, one that entices you to break away from routine and to ride where you want to ride, unrestricted.

Built, Tuned and Ready to Ride
When you order a bike, one of our trained mechanics will carefully prepare and pack your bike for shipping. Upon delivery, the assembly is simple and all necessary tools and plastic pedals are conveniently included in the box.

Please Note: Due to ongoing issues in the global bike supply chain, manufacturers may substitute certain component items due to availability. In this situation, they will be replaced with the same quality or better performing parts.

Better gravel bikes available for not much more if you strip out the dropper and suspension fork, neither of which should be needed on a gravel bike
Still a good deal though if lightweight mtb with Tomacesque curly bars is your bag (edited)

Depends what kind of stuff you're riding, but I've put a dropper and the same suspension fork on my gravel bike and it really helps with the more gnarly side of gravel (what most people would classify as mountain bike trails), but with still most of the advantages that a gravel bike has over a mountain bike - i.e. it's lighter, better on the climbs and more comfortable on the road and over longer distances. I find it makes it a really good all-rounder.

I paid £500 just for the fork on this bike not long ago so this is an absolute steal.

    Well.....lets look at the downsides...

    1. Gravel bikes still aren't a thing.....despite what the marketing men think.

    2. If they were a thing (they're not) they wouldn't have a suspension fork.

So it's a parts bin compilation special at best....

    EVERY. SINGLE. DEAL.

    30mm travel fork, not 300mm.

Looks like a good deal, although it's pretty hefty for a gravel bike. Weighs over 3kg more than mine, and almost as much as my XC MTB. Will probably roll quite well on the road or flatter gravelly stuff though.

So your gravel bike is less than 7.8kg??? My 2020 Cannondale SuperSix evo isn’t even that light, and that’s a decent level bike with £800 worth of wheels, full carbon frame set and seatpost

My full sus xc machine is very light, it’s aluminium and weighs less than my mates new £4K Trek full carbon and that tips the scales at 12.8kg (edited)

Has everything you need to get started into road/gravel/off road riding

    Good spec and great price

Ok so slightly heavy but unless your racing probably going to have minimal impact to your riding

I wish this was available when I got my gravel bike, as that small amount of front suspension really helps on the hard pack bumpy mud around the edges of fields and the dropper will help on tricky descents (edited)

Funny how bike elietists gave me when I said that gravel bikes should have at least front suspension forks. Yet here we are with exactly that.

    Hypocrites.

Nice price, but dropper and suspension not needed for 99.9% of users, just needs the a2bilty to go off the beaten track, use an MTB if suspension and/or dropper required

    That's a good value bike

Looks a solid deal... I'd quite fancy it as an all weather commuter, but I think the fork will prevent a front mudguard... Interesting though!
    maciejklaser's avatar
I am sure you could pair it with a decent mudguard from SKS for example

how is this deal compare to Specialized Diverge E5 Comp for £1088?

They look very similar, both have a form of front suspension, and APEX groupsets. The Specialized is £700 more though.

    Decent spec MTB

Looks like a solid bike and quite good price. Wish it didn't have the suspension and be a bit cheaper. Would have most likely gone for it. (edited)

Could you still use this if you swung the handle bars around like we used to in the 80's?
Is this like a racer with your mates Grifter wheels on it?
Now, if they had replaced the racer handlebars with Chopper handlebars, then you would really have something similar to what we used to bosh up every other weekend when looking to mix it up a bit!
