It's not a massive bargain, but it's a sensibly specced budget bike for a low price. Certainly much better than the sub £100 steel-framed garbage Argos and the supermarkets sell.

£180 for a bike without disc breaks seems wild to me

    Seriously?

Forks look terrible. Seems poor value to me. Also horrible 3x drivetrain with a freewheel which are difficult to dial in due to typical freewheel wobble.

Is this a good bike for going to and from the shops and the occasional fun ride on the weekend? Very mixed comments!

It's a very basic bike with budget components. If the forks were fixed instead of unnecessarily heavy and not fit for purpose suspension forks I'd definitely recommend it for short trips like you're describing. As is, I'd say yes but... have you thought about spending a little more on something like one of Halford's Carrera models, or a similar budget on a secondhand bike - most towns have somewhere (often a charity) that services and repairs old bikes and sells them on. Places like Bike For Good in Glasgow, The Bike Station in Edinburgh, etc.
