I've been to Saudi Arabia in 2007 for Hajj - apart from the religious-side, which I loved very much, I hated every minute of being in such an un-organised and messy country.

However, I went back in November 2022 to visit my sister and I fell in love with the country. Massive change since 2007. Super highways, glossy shopping malls, even the Umrah in Meccah and my visit to Madinah were much more organised. I went back in January 2023 with my wife and she loved it too.

With respect to all non-muslims commenting, this deal is mainly for Muslims. Jeddah is 30 minutes drive to Meccah, so it's a very convenient and extremely cheap way to do a Umrah from the UK. Heat added, highly recommended.

My visit in January was on WizzAir. Transit was a bit long but you get what you pay for. Four flights in total, all on-time and very good service on board. I would travel with them again. (edited)

Ever thought of staying or living there permanently?

Also worth noting that very recently (last weekend) KSA has introduced a visa waiver for Brit passport holders. So that saves about £120/person.

A friend of mine just did Umrah last week with Family as a british passport holder and went using the new visa waiver visa. so yes you can use it for Umrah.

What exactly is there to do there, in jeddah? I get if you're Muslim then there mecca but if not, has jeddah itself got things to do to spend a week being sufficiently not bored?

a week would probably be too long, unless you're using it as a base to explore. Saudi is a very big country with vast amounts of nothingness in between!
There's the old part of Jeddah to explore called Al -Balad, but that's half a day.
Evenings can be spent walking along prominade, not much going on though.
There's a waterpark and amusement park.
There are malls, if that's your sort of thing.
    Plenty of places to eat

Not really a city made for walking and bus service network isn't that wide but get's you to the main points. Taxis are easy to get but can soon rack up.
They've started scooter rental but it's limited.
you can rent a car but their driving is crazy (by our standards) but it works!

You've got Mark telling you what it was like 8 years ago, but listen to those that have been recently. It's changed a lot and at break neck speed too when you consider societal/cultural change.

But it's Saudi Arabia. Been there many times with work. Hated every minute. You'd have to pay me to go back in my own time.

Didn't hate their cash though did you? No complaints there....

Why don't you ever mention the Airline(s) in your titles?

Any way to guarantee self-transfer if first flight is delayed?

Hasn't Saudi Arabia opened itself to tourism? There is a lot of pre-Islamic history to see in the country. Hot from me!

If its a 2 or 3 hour layover, do you still need to check in?

    It's a 9 hour layover

Separate topic but do Saudi require vaccination or COVID test now?

    Not anymore.
