Blurb:
Endless Sky is a 2D space trading and combat game inspired by the classic Escape Velocity series. Work your way up from a relatively wimpy shuttle, cargo ship, or fighter, to a highly upgraded and customized flagship or to a massive fleet of warships or freighters. Earn money by carrying passengers or cargo, escorting convoys, bounty hunting, or plundering and capturing enemy ships. Take sides in a civil war, or ignore the story line and just enjoy exploring the galaxy and blasting pirates.

The main story line takes about 8-16 hours to play through. The galaxy contains hundreds of star systems and planets, and several alien species with their own unique technologies. You can choose between more than fifty ships and several hundred ship upgrades. A plugin system allows anyone with a text editor and a paint program to create new ships, weapons, or missions, and the galaxy editor can be used to add new star systems and planets.

Endless Sky is free, open source, and cross platform (Windows, Mac, and Linux). Over time, the game universe will expand as contributors add new missions, story lines, alien species, places to explore, sound effects, and artwork.

For more information, please visit the website or read the player's manual.

This game is not only free but open source.

For the old school EV Nova players there’s a few differences. For one the asteroids move a lot faster, which is kinda annoying but you can mine them so it makes sense. Another difference is you don’t seem to be able to buy the ship mod that slowly refuels you as you go, that’s fine because you can now arrange multiple jumps in series for hands off travel and when you want to land just press L and it will automatically go to the planet, even better if you have a mission there then it will take you to the correct planet.

What do I miss most about EV Nova? Gotta be Captain Hector and tbh I preferred the old spaceship designs compared to these ones.

Enjoy it, it’s pretty much as fun as EV Nova was and a great remake which is an impressive open source library. Support the creators of this, they gone done good.

There's also a "high DPI" free DLC on Steam at store.steampowered.com/app…PI/ - looks like it's for folks with large/hi-res monitors (I have a 32" 4K monitor, so probably qualify). It gives you "double resolution" graphics, assuming you can drive the game at a high resolution of course.

Is this a single player game that you can dip in and out of or one where you play against lots of other people?

Reminds me of the old Flash Trek game. I also just found out that there's a Star Trek mod for this, nice.

Great game! Played a lot of Escape Velocity: Nova when that still existed, this is a lovingly crafted and quality homage.

This is a great game, have passed many hours amassing a fleet and exploring the universe. You tube some space music to play in the background. (edited)

wow looks great! my cup of tea. like elite but 2d?
the plot feature sounds interesting rather than a never ending (endlesss) game which i don't like

A future iteration of Escape Velocity and Escape velocity Nova. Have ploughed hours into all these

Highly recommended and for free is great

Hasn't this always been free? There was quite a hype a few years back for being open sourced. (edited)
