Not bothered about the touchscreen so was hoping the discount code worked on their other cheaper T480 offering, but nope.

This is a decent price at £150 though. Is the touchscreen same as modern tablets so doesn't impact brightness or longevity?

Touch screen will always use more battery due to the digitiser. Standard screens on these are usually pretty poor. There's an IGZO panel you can pop in these for a decent price. Innolux N140HCG-GQ2, ajparts.co.uk stocks it but you have to tell them you want the exact model and not a compatible part. After some convincing, they checked the actual model. When I bought, they only had the rev.C1 which comes without the brackets so I had to ask them to add brackets to the order.

My unit arrived with tons of dead pixels, I then had to return and swap for a unit with no dead pixels. They charge a few pound extra if you want guaranteed zero dead pixels as they'll go check the screen before sending. Total cost with postage was around £45 and the panel is confirmed genuine and dramatically brighter with much deeper and accurate colour reproduction.

Though be aware, you'll need the 30 pin cable for non-touch as touch screen laptop will come with a 40 pin which won't be compatible.

detailed their experience replacing their t480 screen if you want more info.

Have been looking at 8th gen Lenovos for a while, almost went for an x280 but I'll have a go at this for the price. I'll upgade it to 16GB myself though

8GB RAM is £8-10 at CEX for this system, no need to spend more:
CeX (UK) : Stock search (webuy.com)

2 year warranty on that and no shipping if you can find it local. I would get 3200 so you can take it with you later but you can run 2666 or 2400 on this laptop as that's the max speed anyway.

I found a YouTube playlist consisting of a collection of T480 DIY guides. It won't let me post the link here because it thinks it's a video, but if you search "Thinkpad T480 DIY Guides" on YT you should find (might be easier to filter the search for playlists)

Can this be charged using appropriate wattage USB C charger?
    farmphdbank's avatar
I have one of these for work. It charges fine using the Kensington USB C hub posted in a deal here a while ago. *However*, there seems to be weird contention issues on the USB bus. It might be drivers on the laptop (as my employer is extremely slow at rolling out windows updates) but just throwing it out there that 2k screen + webcam + keyboard/mouse + (other normal WFH stuff) with the Kensington hub over USB C might be frustrating..

Deleted my comment because my complaint was unfounded, thanks to the poster below for making my life easier. Seems you can swap the ctrl and fn keys bothbphysically and in the bios! (edited)
    GrabbaBargain's avatar
I think you can swap the keys back to classic layout via the bios but then have the problem of the keys themselves not matching as they're different sizes so can't physically swap them over and need new labels to stick on them.

    Received mine today.

First impression is that it's in good used condition. Obvious signs of use but no knocks or cracks on the corners of the casing. Screen has some very small marks from the keys but they're impossible to see when switched on. Touchpad is slightly shiny from use.

Touchscreen works as it should but I doubt I'll use it much.

My only niggle is the ANSI keyboard. Would have preferred the UK ISO as per the picture on the advert.

As a bonus it came with a 512GB (476 GB) NVMe (not the 256Gb that I ordered), i5-8350U CPU, bluetooth, and both batteries. The batteries seem to be in good condition. Internal is 73.25% and external is 84% of original capacity. I connected the charger to test it worked but disconnected it and ran the laptop on the charge that was in the batteries when it was delivered. It ran for over 4.5 hours, before the external battery went below 50%. Internal battery was still pretty much full.

Plan to dual boot Win11 & Linux Mint.

Over all I'm pretty pleased with what I got for £150.

Thats great news, how do you chaeck battery capacity please?

Anyone else received their order and what's the verdict on the laptop condition?

Importantly its Windows 11 compatible (8th gen intel).
    newsgroupmonkey's avatar
Frankly, you can put windows 11 on anything up to 10 years old.
Microsoft even tell you how to do it. It’s just not officially supported.

Is this easy to upgrade the ram on? Also is 256gb enough storage or is 512gb the one worth going for?

If anyone doesnt accept their laptop and wants to return the seller gives free Royal Mail 48 label.
However be careful as they only pay for 0-2KG, although package weighs ~2.4kg
Had a lot of fuss at the post office as they rejected it on the weight, eventually managed to talk them round but it was extra inconvience.... (edited)

Did you have to pay the difference or something? And was your return processed quickly? (edited)

    Came this morn.
    Overall seems OK.
    Screen is in good condition.
The keyboard is not UK ISO, and has been re-printed you can smell the paint but I'm sure that will wear off (the smell) over time. Would have preferred the larger UK return key though.
The internal battery is completely dead according to Lenovo vantage software, but it came with the large swappable battery which is at 90% health apparently... so not too bad?
It came with the the m.2 cage so main storage is nvme.
Came with the face scanner and webcam, which I'm not too pleased about, the one which comes with the webcam only has a privacy slider which I would have preferred personally.
I like the form factor, probably just about right, but it's a lot heavier than it looks!
Went into BIOS and swapped the Ctrl and Fn keys, because having the Fn key there is annoying.
    Overall pretty clean and tidy.

So I've just dropped £9 on an 8gig RAM module with p+p. £14 on a new modern wifi 6 + bluetooth 5.2 card (AX200NGW) off ebay, and I'll have to get a new internal battery - maybe - not sure how much I'll be out in the field with it yet. Then there's the other m.2 slot to fill which require a £5 adapter and a 2230 form nvme.

Probably still quids in after buying all upgrades considering the cost of a new laptop in this power range.
    eakin's avatar
Mine seems to have UK keyboard with large return key
Does have that cleaner smell tho, not sure its paint or polish but I dont mind that

Do you have a photo of your keyboard?
  16. neroneuk's avatar
Came in superb conditions. The keys are all new. 8350u instead of the 8250u and with both batteries one 20% usage and the other 9%

  18. cer_tes's avatar
OHHH thanks for that, the seller has another laptop that I was considering buying elsewhere for £540, but it's £500 here with the code, cheers!

(I really need to learn how to use eBay, I've been looking for a 9th gen i7 lenovo laptop the whole week and did not come across this offer) (edited)

Can I ask any knowledgeable person reading this: can you confirm it's good enough to run mech. engineering software (CAD, FEA,...) ?
And is it the best you can get for £500 ?

Contacted the seller this morning and they are sending me a replacement detachable battery to try in my laptop.
    crabstix69's avatar
Great! glad you managed to get it sorted out. Hopefully the new battery should give you a good 4 hours. I've seen an ebay seller selling genuine batteries (second hand) pulled from defective laptops selling for around 30 quid. Since yours will be a new one, I'm sure it will last a bit longer than that.
  20. BlueNoseGers's avatar
Great price for this, especially when it can be upgraded quite easily..I’ve bought from this seller previously, no issues at all..

Had a t490 as an apprentice for work. The main issues for me were the small amount of ram and screen burn in issues. You'll probably wanna bump the ram up to 16 if you get the chance, and the good thing is that these are very friendly to take apart yourself. Decent little workstation overall.
    ThePizzaBoxChef's avatar
Will jump in and back this up. These laptops have a bit of a horrific ghosting/burn in issue and you really need at least 16gb on these. Used to have one of these too for work. My job had about 40 of these and all of them would get some serious ghosting by having a window open for only 30mins and it'd take a while for it to disappear.
  22. timbudong's avatar
I'm always tempted by these but I can't for the life of me think what I need another laptop for, I just love the aesthetic of these 🔥
  23. Charlie_Lee's avatar
Can someone please explain what the thunderbolt issue is and how do I update it so it doesn't break? Thanks! I think the firmware on mine is v17, not sure if this is bad or not.
    TheStill's avatar
There was a bug in the firmware that would cause excessive writes to a chip until it would eventually burn out. That meant when your charger asked the computer how much power it needed it got no response. So your laptop could no longer be charged.

To fix it you just need to open the Lenovo vantage app and apply any waiting updates. So as long as Lenovo vantage says you are up to date you should be fine.

Top deal, heat added. What's the cheapest gen8 i5 with a larger screen anyone?
  25. SJ01's avatar
Buy this. It works very well all round. Touchscreen is great for kid's to use.
  26. EdH's avatar
What about those screen scratches as shown on the ebay selling page?
    GrabbaBargain's avatar
That's another thing putting me off a touchscreen. Will be worse if wolverine's old lappy than someone with sausage fingers. Presume the description is a catch-all and some won't be that bad.

i7 out of stock. Lenovo will have much better build quality. I bought exactly the same one two weeks ago, and I am very pleased with it. It works great as a laptoph that I take in my backpack, I always have it at hand. For example, I do a lot of things on the bus that I don't have to do at home after work. These Lenovo laptops are considered to be the last of these solid old laptops, just like old cars that lasted for years without breaking down. Compared to the cars we have now, where we can't even change the bulb ourselves after opening the hood. And the thickness of their sheets leaves much to be desired. I moved a larger disk from an old laptop and twice as much memory. The battery actually lasts about two hours. I ordered a replacement battery from eBay, we'll see how it works. And, of course, the keyboard is legendary. The number of options that can be set in the BIOS is staggering. A very well-thought-out laptop, well-made in terms of quality. And the touch screen is the icing on the cake. (edited)

This model might be the most popular one on r/thinkpad these days. Great value for win11 machine
  30. TheStill's avatar
Got one of these last year with different spec but an absolutely fantastic machine.

But I remember at the time people mentioning to check that the thunderbolt version is updated as soon as possible. As there is a bug in it if not updated breaks the charging port. Mine required the update when it arrived from the same seller.

Is this powerful enough to run Photoshop at low end editing nothing major? Thanks
    pc5020's avatar
Yeah, the limiting factor will be the RAM if your files end up being quite large, ideally you'd want 16Gb of RAM.
  33. lookingforBargains's avatar
noob here - is ir better to get windows 10 or 11? Is it cheaper to buy the base storages and upgrade ram and ssd myself?
    Smurf786's avatar
I personally prefer 10 to 11 but if you get 10 you can upgrade to 11 for free anyway

how would this laptop with 16GB ram compare to an old 2015 macbook pro I own ? Would be it faster, about same or slower ?
My 10yr daugther thinks mac is slow even for her use ....
    ikorodu's avatar
I guess it would depend on what type of macbook pro you have. I have a 2014 MBP with 16gb and an i7, it still performs reasonably well for me in everyday stuff like office, teams calls, youtube etc. But it was a fairly high spec when new 10 years ago.

Just wondering (in general use) how capable the 8th is compared to a 10th gen... Is it worth paying the extra money for the later cpu?
    Wooj's avatar
    I'm general use, no.
  36. markstc's avatar
Got this laptop about year ago its quick and mine came with battery attachment, battery last a long old time. Although mine is 16gb Ram and paid similar.

These are great. Bought one for parents as their i3 4gb was finally dying. Debloated it and it boots in 3-4 seconds, perfect for day to day usage.

For the SSD upgrade - Looking on some youtube videos - Is it best to fit a NVMe M.2 2280 SSD ?
    MadeInBeats's avatar
Not sure, you're best opening it up and see what it comes with installed. If it's a 2.5 inch SSD, then you may need to buy the M.2 cage to fit one.

I've just been looking at putting a 2nd drive in the WWAN slot (SIM Card bus basically). This is can be done but it needs to be a 2242 nvme B+M key - which are pretty hard to find, and at a price that's worth it!

Looks like you can get a £5 converter so you can put in 2230 M key nvme. ebay.co.uk/itm…ded (edited)
  39. Peter_Szygowski's avatar
I bought this T480 a year ago with the idea of upgrading the SSD. As I've mentioned in previous posts this was impossible to do successfully despite hours of upgrading everything possible and following every guide I could find. Simply it would not reboot or clone successfully. The SSD that it came with was the only way it would boot with so it works well with that! and the 1 TB crucial drive I bought can only function as a external drive but not as a replacement internal one. I don't know who had these or which organisation ordered them from levono but I think something was inbuilt that stops this or makes it virtually impossible to do as a basic upgrade.
Any other owners done any better than me?
    Otherwise it's a nice computer.
    Tony.Connect's avatar
Surely you just boot from usb and install windows.
  40. MrsBucket's avatar
256GB is on the small size, any thoughts on whether it worth buying the upgrade elsewhere? With the 25% discount there doesn’t seem (too) much in it but I guess when buying elsewhere you can buy a better known brand and have the direct warranty?
