I know you could say the same about any SD card but I only go to 64gb
Just in case it fails imagine a 1.5tb card failing with all you stuff on
I can back up as 64 card easy

It depends on what you want to use it for, but as an archive mechanism, any SD card is a bad idea. This will be most likely aimed at being put into a Switch, where the price of a failure is just mild irritation at having to reinstall games

Wouldn’t it be better to plug in a half decent external SSD drive for this kind of money? Better access speeds too, but obvious not as compact.

Not if you still use a phone with a card slot....

That's insane, this could fit my entire OneDrive contents on it (1tb) which is about £100 a year (unless you buy the 12m code)

Could download everything to here and run a dedup on it as I'm sure there's 10% dups at least and then upload it back again?

Would broadband providers allow this volume of usage though? 1tb download and 1tb upload ? (edited)

OneDrive can be extremely slow, especially if youre using the interface in windows file explorer. On big downloads they throttle the connection too and if you want to view files it may download a whole video, before you can view it (on your throttled connection). The online app is more efficient if youre sorting as it streams it but still clunky. (I find onedrive limited my connection to 4mb/second even though my connection can do 33 download)

Local storage will usually be much much faster/cheaper long term than the cloud. But you do need to factor in a backup for your most valuable data (the cloud doesn't tend to fail)

The external hard disks you have could be good as a back up. You may want to get something like a new 2tb external 2.5" hdd which can hold a lot. Small footprint. They go up to about 5TB without needing a separate power cable. Via USB you'll get about (70-130 megabytes/second continuous read or write)

Alternative if you want top speed and budget isn't an issue, you could have an external SSD drive, either m.2 stick in an enclosure, or dedicated external SSD or a drive with a external SATA cable. Speeds via USB can go up to (500+ mb/second, potentially thousands)

The sd card like this is very compact but can be unreliable as so much chip is in such a small space and it can generate a lot of heat and die, or its easy to break. They're great for unimportant data though and local copies in a device.

A NAS may be excessive for your needs. They're best for people needing lots of storage or multiple people sharing a server at different times. Think small business work server or video editors with lots of footage, or more commonly now personal media server (people collecting tons of movie/tv series files etc.) Those devices can run programs too.

Look at diskprices.co.UK for some of the best offers on drives, sticks etc. EBay also has good deals occasionally (edited)

Blows my mind how you can fit 1.5tb on a micro sd. Feeling my age!
    Paul_Slater's avatar
Me too it's nuts how that much storage can fit into that small space!

Scan are selling a 2TB nvme drive 2230 for £125.
    sirkenyard's avatar
What has that to do with microSD cards which you use for phones, Nintendo switch etc...?
  6. Conkers816's avatar
Yikes! I didn't realise they'd gone up to that size. 2TB must surely be around the corner ?

You could get all the roms if you had a retro handheld and one of these ..

Ha, I've seen like 64TB on ebay for about a tenner!
    DuggyDarko's avatar
    That'll be 64GB not TB.

What a time to be alive. I remember when I got my first 1gig memory card in 2008; I think and that was a big deal.
    hamsterboy's avatar
I got a 17.2GB HDD when I was a student (pre millennium) so I could copy cd's. *duplicate backups of ones I legally own, obviously...

Yep. I wonder what 20 years down the road will be like, justTeleport will be beaming my kebab to me, I'll be plugging an aerial into my ear to work from home. Dfs will still have a sale on, sports direct will still be carp. And France will be on strike.

Within a decade i can see 100tb being micro SD; Its crazy how things have developed over last 20 years.

I couldn’t sign myself up to a lifetime of being careful enough not to loose 1.5TB of data on a Micro USB
    Alex_H's avatar
Who's storing important data on a micro SD card for any period of time? Best application for these are games in purple devices, so data loss really doesn't matter.
  13. amillstone's avatar
I really don't need this but kinda wanna buy it

Is this compatible with my Radio Shack TRS80 Model 2?

Ironically you don't need to spend all this money to expand your memory...

This is worth more than gold (even with over 400 heat )
Micro SD = about 0.5 gram, so £268/gram. Google sez gold is £70/gram at the mo.

    So there.
  16. theodudhill's avatar
Will this work with a Nintendo switch?
    cameron.carter's avatar
Yes, the Switch supports microSD cards up to 2TB.
  17. bagga212's avatar
Just goes to show they been ripping us off the manufacturers

Since they can keep making larger sizes in the same footprint and size of this micro sd card since 1990
    DennisDavid's avatar
The problem has always been commercial application; The HD TV was about during the 70s but didn't hit mainstream until late 90s. Now, with UHD, 4K etc it makes sense these cards will become standard in a few years.

Does Steam Deck support 1.5TB or it supports up to 1TB ?
    yeababyyea's avatar
I was thinking the same with tho mobiles will it only see 1tb or not work at all ??
  19. maxtor's avatar
Storing 1.5TB on a microSD? I'm not keen on putting all my eggs in one basket.
    DuggyDarko's avatar
    Dont buy one then 🤷🏻‍♂️
  20. ROSG04's avatar
great for a modded Switch and maybe phones that still have the SD card if you can live with the slower speeds, other than that just get an ext SSD for the same money at 2TB
  21. kyeung's avatar
    Good to see bigger size
    steveieboy1's avatar
    She agrees with you

This on the steam deck would be perfect! Some games lately are huge like mortal Kombat, NBA, red Dead redemption, Forza!

Pretty pricey still I guess though

Get the Corsair mp600 core mini 2TB for £10 less at scan.
  23. TOM1210's avatar
Been using a micro sd card of this brand in my laptop in a sd card adapter for maybe 8 plus years loads of important things stored in it never failed me yet I’d trust it probably more then I’d trust a subscription service.
    amillstone's avatar
I hope you have all that data backed up. Just because it hasn't failed yet, doesn't mean it won't ever.
  24. whosyourdaddy's avatar
Just had a 200GB SanDisk card fail on me and it's only 2 years old. This is a lot of data to lose
    blaine's avatar
Lucky you, you can make this problem 7x worse now.
