How can you tell the freshest fruit and veg in Tesco now?

They have removed the best before dates. But there must be a way the staff tell which is newest for stock rotation.

Look for the 2 character code.
Letter is month number is day.
    So A5 is january 5th.

But, with Tesco's fruit and veg even the stuff well within the best by date is often well past it.

    Thanks.
Any idea on how Sainsbury's codes work?

Why is it a first world problem to try and avoid wasting money on out of date foodstuffs?

When I worked there 25 years ago I used to at least try and rotate the stock

Lidls is the worst, don't understand even after reading online. But their stuff is way passed. Lettuce that is not crunchy any longer etc. I try to avoid when I can.

Funny isn't it how that varies? Round here Lidl is not bad, but the Tesco stuff in my local looks like it has been out for a month. I wonder if it is to do with the proximity of the distribution centres?

Every supplier can be different. It's what you call a Julian Date Code, actually isn't a standard for it. Normally it is week number and day code (not date, day of the week) it was picked/packed. It is not linked to what will last the best. Real world example from Christmas, Sprouts picked on a Monday, fine, picked on a Tuesday when had been a frost overnight, Monday's lasted longer than Tuesdays.

Actually most of them just use the first 12 letters of the alphabet (so march is C) and the date for best before. So pretty pointless.

Worrying about bbd on Tesco fruit and veg is the least of your worries. Buy from a decent supplier.

Who is a better supplier please?

Tesco freshness has gone downhill big time. I’ve always shopped at Tesco but for over a year the quality is ridiculous, if I don’t blanch or freeze my meat asap. It’s going off within days. I’ve stopped buying chicken from there all together because it’s gone off before the best before date.
