Why do people buy cheap Chinese tat for smoke detectors?

You might as well save the money and have no detector.

Most of the 5* reviews will be fake, probably won't detect anything as it's probably just a circuit with a flashing led.

Avoid buying tat for critical products.

You can test your smoke alarm with a spray. Nothing wrong with cheap smoke alarms if they work and you test them regularly... Everything wrong with an expensive brand that doesn't get tested because you trust it's going to work because you spent a lot on it.

There's a smart smoke alarm by Meross, but I'm put off as it says it requires a Meross hub it's dirt cheap, and the hub isn't expensive, but I have too many hubs already. It says homekit and smartthings compatible, but even reading the questions, it's not clear if it would work without the Meross hub.

Manufacturer does answer a question stating that the Meross hub is required...does anyone know if it's possible to connect without? (edited)

I bought these, you need the hub to connect them to HomeKit.

Seems like a bad idea to tie your smoke detection to your wifi

Their smart plugs often stop working because they insist on checking in with the Meross server. Nowhere is it documented that if the Meross server is down then you can't use them over WiFi either. There's also no indication of what the problem is, you just have to wait for it to come back up. I wouldn't buy Meross ever again and definitely not a vital item like a smoke alarm!

I don't understand. A 10 year battery but a 3 year warranty? And can the battery be replaced?
