Ordered as my LG Gram 16" i7-1360P is going crazy with the fans when placed on my lap.  The fan on my previous Gram 17" i7-1165G hardly came on.  I thought laptops were supposed to improve but seem to be going back with respect to heat dissipation and efficiency. (edited)

I couldn't help but google.. Is it ok to use a laptop on your lap?

    I mean as opposed to a table/desk/stand/cooling pad/etc

I have a cooler but I am not convinced it is of use. the laptop fans blow downwards to get rid of heat where as the cooler is blowing upwards which to me is just trying to blow the heat back into the laptop, if that makes any sense. I personally think they are more a novelty.
