If only I had the attention span to read this! The percentage of adults with this issue is so large. 5% alleged, likely double this from what I've gathered. Good luck getting help via the NHS. Took me over a year to force my GP to refer me, over two years to get assessed and it's been over a year and still no actual help. I would happily pay private, but if you do this all your prescriptions are then private too, seriously expensive. Fact is the government don't want you to be assessed, it's will cost the NHS too much. Very short sighted given that treating those with this issue would boost productivity and GDP of the UK. Rant over.

Your prescriptions are private yes. For the medication, depending on your pharmacy can be anywhere from £90 - £120ish per month.
This is temporary however, usually 6 months of paying this rate. They (your private assessors) are basically looking to build a 6 months record of how your medication is suiting you and if it is working to your benefit then they can then make a request to the NHS for a shared price agreement. Provided it all goes well, you then only pay the standard fee for collecting a prescription from a pharmacy every month.
I went through this last year and it was a big relief when the 6 months period was over. Worth it, as it has really improved my lot in life at a point where previously it seemed hopeless. Bear with it! (edited)

The book Dirty Laundry by ADHD Love, and their YouTube channel, are very very good if you haven't heard of them before.

Can anyone recommend any places for private diagnosis and prescriptions if you're willing/able to pay? Self-medicating on Caffeine + L-Theanine tablets isn't ideal when there's better alternatives available.

Look into right to choose. You get referred Via your GP to a private, NHS approved, psychiatrist. The NHS then pay. Hope this helps. I used it and am now on meds, it worked out so well.

How refreshing to see an ADHD thread that actually feels useful and supportive!

A certain British based documentary single handedly set back access to life changing support, for individuals by at least 5-10 years. It's vital that the people who geniunely need support can access it, as it's there, albeit very slowly without guidance.

I got diagnosed as a child in 1993 at the age of 4 and half I was one of the first few hundred people in England to be prescribed methylphenidate for adhd I the only side effects I have is appetite suppressant and my height was stunted but not majority I’m 5ft 2 so don’t bother me at all but the benefits for Ritalin far outweigh the negatives I feel sorry for people waiting for a diagnosis the service is a state the adult adhd service in Plymouth won’t even let me give any of my appointments to my wife who is on the waiting list for assessment as I don’t need to see them they only want to do medication reviews which I don’t need as I’m stable on my dosage of 72 mg a day

Devon is shocking for adult adhd and asd services. They took me off their list as they were already 5 years behind. But even if they did diagnose they'd only offer a group thing now and then.

My son was diagnosed at the age of 5, he's 25 now and 6ft tall so it never harmed his height. But I absolutely am for medication for those that need it. I know the difference it made to my son growing up.
