sorted byEdit: here is the difference between IPS/ VA/ ADS panels if you can be bothered to watch it
OLED is completely different technology
Panel makers offer different wide viewing angle panels like ADS, IPS, VA, and PLS panels. These panels extend the conventional displays from 170/160 to 178/178 degrees in LED TVs.
IPS or In-Plane Switching
In this, the liquid crystals in the cells lie along the same plane always. They are parallel to the panel's plane always because of the transverse electric field. All the crystals of a cell rotate by 90 degrees when voltage is applied to the cell.
ADS or Advanced Plane-to-Line Switching
The infrastructure of the ADS panel is the same as PLS or Plane-to-Line Switching. In this, the liquid crystals lie along the same plane always, like IPS displays.
ADS is different from IPS because it uses a longitudinal electric field and a transverse electric field for parallel liquid crystal movement.
Looking to upgrade my parents old 37 inch Panasonic plasma that's about 15 years old.
Will be used mainly for general TV shows, soaps, occasional movies and sports like cricket and football all via sky.
And by the way, the cheapest I could then find the 65 inch with EPP was around £1000. So £700 now is just a steal.
My worries too before buying, but still risked it and bought, because it was exactly the type of tv I needed.
So to answer your question: Samsung know they messed up.
Now the option to check and upgrade to the latest firmware is greyed out I am still at 1040, the one that came with.
Sometimes the option is not greyed out by the way, but when I checked then for firmware updates, it said I have 1040, the latest. So they block the firmware updates from the server. We're good.
Now speaking of the TV there are quite a few good things - just check the reviews, I agree with them after using it.
But. I came from a C7 OLED - burn in issues, panel replaced by LG after 4 years, all the OLED good stuff.
When buying the C7 I've just bought it and switched between factory options pre-set, chose the one I liked, all good, the image was perfect. I did fiddle a lot later to see what the TV can do, but it was perfect.
With the QN90B. Oh my God I had to fiddle with the image options for HOURS. not exagerating I can say I bought the TV on Saturday and only very late on Sunday I found the right image options to create what I liked. I also used the C7 side by side to help.
It is VERY DIFFICULT to make the image realistic but still bright like the mini led can be.
Eventually I did get there and I now have 4 custom pre-sets which I use depending on the content. The image is very impressive. Being bright really really makes a big difference. Tbh anything you watch and you have sunny views the image is more realistic and significantly better than my C7. The sun on the TV and sunny scenes can be bright to the level of slightly annoyingly bright - exactly like when you walk outside on a sunny day. Very realistic and thoroughly impressive.
Blooming - to be short: it's taken me about 2 weeks to get used to it and find it acceptable. But coming from an oled I think this is pretty good and it shows actually how good this tv is regarding blooming.
Blooming does show for example when you turn the volume up, around the graphic with the volume level. Or when you go in the menus and the lower bar rises on a black background. And that blooming is a bit annoying, showing a dirty, not acceptable to me at least.
But in real content, the blooming is significantly better for the eyes. It is almost non existend to be honest. And, coming from an OLED imagine fan (not of an oled burn in though), I can say I am impressed!
Example: I've watched the whole series of THE EXPANSE on Amazon. The outer space and the stars, the ships blasting through pitch black space, they are very difficult scenes for led/mini led TVs. But the blooming is so limited, to the point that it is close to non-existent. I did not want to watch any episode in the bedroom on the C7, but on the QN90B. I am very impressed!
By the way, I tested some LG QNED and SONY led and mini led TVs in the shops - the blooming was horrible. Sony's image seemed to be more realistic immediately. But I could not stand the blooming. A no go for me.
So unfortunately, who wants a very good LED TV without the blooming issue, there is only Samsung to go with. Specifically the Neo Qled lines with the VA panels.
QN85B was good, very close to the QN90B. The only notable difference was in worse blooming for the QN85B. The black bars were not as black either on the QN85B respect to the QN90B. But who is not as sensitive to blooming like an Oled fan like me, the QN85B is a cracking TV too.
The new QN90C now has the QN85B ADS panel with improvements in image processing.
I think the best buy for mini led in the last few years is either the QN90B or the QN85B.
I hope this helps!
Good luck in the soundbar hunt. I have a 6 year old Sony one that I picked up from JL for £100 with a sub-woofer when they were clearing stock and it is excellent.
If there are decent priced Sony options, would recommend checking them out if they still do them the same way. (edited)
Hope I wont be disappointed with the picture quality! (edited)
(Im not fussed about the frame tbh so it's based on the 2 65", but at half the price, the saving will pay for a wall mount and towards a decent sound bar, so it's tempting if there's not much between the 2)
This will become the main TV in the house and fie the PS5, which will replace my 55" LGUH950V which had been great for the last few years, so hoping to see some improvement with a replacement tv. (edited)
Replacing a 65" 1080P Sony from a decade ago.
One thing I would say it that you need to play with the setting to get it just as you like it. I'm still tinkering with it for certain scenes/films but I think I'm just about there for night viewing. Mostly I turned all all the processing. Happy to share my settings if needed. Happy watching
Hey ho! Great deal
Saved me from myself.
Lasted 2 years. Wouldn’t recommend Samsung TV’s.
