With 16GB of RAM, the system is far less likely to ever need to start using swap. As a result, you won't notice slow downs and the life of your SSD won't be prematurely shortened by excessive swap usage.
This really is the best configuration option, as you can't add RAM later so having 16GB means your future needs are met. You can however, easily plug-in an external SSD if you want more storage in the future so there is far less value in going for larger storage. The larger memory really is the best upgrade option.
You would need to use a Thunderbolt external drive for faster speeds than internal SSD as USB speeds are slower. If you are transferring between Thunderbolt drive it will be limited to the internal SSD drive maximum speed.
It would be interesting to see working files on Thunderbolt drive being used on this computer to see any performance improvement over internal, it may not be the case.
But at least it has 16gb ram, thats the main thing. It's a huge improvement over the 8gb model.
Wake up the trolls, tell them there yet another new outlet for them via a Mac Mini post.
but go on and keep defending your own inferior purchase, using Apple marketing you don't understand
Great value though, lovely product.
Apple’s worldwide warranty should nevertheless apply. (edited)
However my suggestion is that if you actually NEED the extra ram, you’d likely be doing something where the extra cpu/gpu power of the Pro version was also justified, economically justified, quite apart from the bigger faster internal storage and extra io. List for the 16/512 Pro is only about £300 more than list for the 16/512 plain M2. And being a standard config, availability (and potential for discounts) should be better than non-standard configs (extra ram) of the plain M2.
But the base M2 would actually satisfy an awful lot of the potential customers…
