Can anyone comment how does this compare with the standard BT fibre router?:)

Standard BT Router will get you a link of 866Mbps typically. A better WIFI 6 router even connecting to decent WIFI 5 hardware should get you 1733Mbps and if you have WIFI 6 card then could get a higher link speed again, it depends what the 5GHz band on this router maxes out to (EDIT: It is 2402Mbps). The quoted 3000Mb is the total combined bandwidth of 2.43GHz and 5GHz usually. So it depends what link speed you want which is the LAN bandwidth you require. If you have a 900Mb+ connection a BT Router may not be able to give you the full bandwidth. Also you may need to tweak your Wireless Card settings to force 5GHz band and also force 802.11a so that you get the full link speed. Windows 11 loves swapping you over to 2.4GHz and dropping the link speed right down. So when using Windows 11 (not much I use Linux 95% of the time) then you need to tweak the Wireless card settings to get the best link speed possible.

Also if you have crap Wireless card in your laptop or desktop then getting this router is a total waste of time unless you also upgrade the Wireless card/hardware in your laptop/desktop. Mobile devices and tablets you would need to look on gsmarena to see what WIFI capability they have. Many have WIFI 6 capability already.

The router also has LAN 1 / 2 aggregation which is more advanced but it means you can in theory aggregate the bandwidth of two 1Gb fibre connections or possibly a fibre + 4G/5G connection depending on the 4G/5G router and it's connectivity options. (edited)

I'm currently with Vodafone using their router because it has a phone port for voip

What router can I use that has this port? (edited)

Best is to buy a voip phone & connect it to the router via lan. That way you can use any router.

How does this compare with my ac86u ?
Ive looked at a comparison and obviously this has wifi 6 which my ac86u doesn't but under mimo 2.4/5ghz this is 2x2 and my ac86u is 3x3 and 4x4.
Not sure what that means exactly but im guessing this isn't really an upgrade apart from the wifi 6, whats the difference between 2x2, 3x3, 4x4 ?

If you buy it from ebuyer you can claim £10 cashback. You do have delivery on top so maybe not worth it.

I don't see the point of only one 2.5 gbe port? Surely you'd need at least two.

So you can connect it to a NAS and more than one 1gb port can benefit from full bandwidth to files or local streams for example? Think of it like (more than) twice the availability on that port

Currently have an ac86u, if buy this and put this as the main router with virgin hub in modem mode, can i put the ac86u upstairs and mesh them ?
Also would they somehow share same ssid and password ?
Otherwise how does it work, you join all your devices to both ssid's and they auto switch to the nearest device ? (edited)

Connect the second router to the main via Ethernet and put it into mesh mode, factory reset the one your putting into mesh mode first tho, after that you can move the mesh router to where ever you want and have it bridged via Ethernet or wireless it's up to you (edited)

What about the other models available like the ASUS TUF Gaming AX5400 and the ROG STRIX AX4200, both only an extra £30 odd more?
If you are upgrading from your ISP router, where do you decide to draw the line?

ASUS TUF Gaming AX5400 is a better option

A great mesh option, almost half the price of XT8.
