    Would thick be any good as commute to work bike along the canal footpaths or full suspension be preferable choice?

    Depends how bumpy they are. Probably better off with a hybrid - would have less rolling resistance than a MTB. Quicker, less effort. Totally depends on the state of the paths. Very much doubt you'd need full sus
