Go to Greece in Sept. Cheaper and nicer. Save Cuba for a winter break when Europe freezes and the Caribbean is comfortable.

Why anyone wants to go to Cuba, Florida, Mexico in their low season baffles me. Hot, high humidity and the ever present risk of a tropical storm or hurricane ruining a few days of your holidays.

Just back from Cuba. Fourteen days of beautify sunshine and Greece has got absolutely nothing that comes close to Varadero beach.

As for the weather, yes it’s hot, yes it’s humid. But who cares when you’re lounging on the beach sipping a pina colada?? It rained twice in two weeks, both times for less than five minutes and the rain had evaporated within ten minutes of the end of each deluge.

Food is not great, they are really struggling with embargo on Russia - but I would definitely return there. Knocks spots off any European destination I’ve ever been.

Underrated comment. Why give yourself future aggro?

Paid £250 with Charterflights to Havana - call only in... 1998.
Best backpacking trip, save for the lack of food. "Private" homestays before AirBnB existed, corrupted police organising private jeep trips in the Guantanamo region, Mojitos in posh hotels for a buck, Salsa music flowing from everywhere in the streets...

    £400 - that's the cost of a song. (edited)

Sorry but looked into Cuba this year 2 weeks AI for 980 at a 5 star! There's a reason it's so cheap - being on the ban list I'm out...

    Ban list? For US travellers?

How much extra is a piece of check-in luggage?

MAN has to be the airport I would most like to never have to use ever again. Unfortunately it's my 'local'.

At least with TUI you'd probably be going from T2 which is ok. Last time I went through security at T1 I thought I'd arrived at Guantanamo Bay.

went to Cuba 4 times back in the late 90s early 00s been USA 2x in the last 6 years and 4 x before going to Cuba...i think i'd choose Cuba over the USA out of the 2 these days

If you know that it's one or the other then that's fair enough - informed choice (although for many, the prospect of not even being able to transit the USA is a bit negative). But the travel agencies obviously don't advertise the fact. There's no way of knowing how long this will last for either - some people might be quite happy to have a cheap Cuban holiday now because they don't plan to go to the USA, then 15yrs down the line their kids get a job in New York, or they want to take the grandkids to Florida etc.

10kg for two weeks eh. Better look for a deal on Cuban nudist colonies.

My experience in Cuba was that the hotels - which are more or less State controlled were pretty rubbish. The food was particularly poor and resorts a bit Soviet. The casa particulares on the other hand were so much better and personal. They could also get food on the black market so the eating was so much better (popcorn). Maybe things have changed.
If you go, try and visit Havana which is a great experience and unique. Bus is cheap and an overnight stop cheap to arrange.
