Ok so I am old and technology confuses me 😬. I have a limited amount of mobile data on my phone. If I was to use this in the car to listen to Spotify that is on my phone will this use my mobile data allowance?

Alexa requires a connection to the internet so yes it will use data. If you download songs with Spotify premium for offline-use then it'll use less data.

Can't you just launch Alexa app on your phone and do this without the gear?

Yes. However the microphone is way better. Also it does some of the voice handling within the chip on the device. Just generally a better experience using Alexa than just directly to your phone.

I've got a 1st gen model of this (in an older car without android auto). For music playing it works brilliantly. Completely hands free, just connects to the phone as soon as you start the car (which can remain in your pocket) and then listens for your commands like any other echo device. Audio plays from the phone linked to the car via Bluetooth and again that's completely seemless. It's great!

If your car doesn't even have Bluetooth then you can connect the echo auto to the aux port, and the music will be played that way, so again should be pretty seemless in use. (edited)

I wish there was a Google version of this. I just got a new car and it doesn't have android auto... But my music subscription is with Google.

Just use bluetooth and your phone.

Can you play music from YouTube and Spotify with this?

Spotify (YouTube music isn't available on Alexa) unless you ask Google using your phone only. For some reason, Google still links up to the Alexa device and in fairness works better than my Alexa at times.

If you have an iPhone then connect it to your car via Bluetooth. You can ask Siri to play the internet radio station of your choice. It'll probably handle Apple music streaming too. Siri may have further skills, I'm not sure.
