Seems like a pretty good deal for a decent basic bike, a local company is selling off ex-hire of this exact model for £285 which have surely had a hard life already. Also available at Wiggle for the same prince of course.

"The Avalanche Sport model is ideal for rocketing down the mountainside and blasting your way from trail to trail with pace, agility and control. It features GT's high-quality 6061-T6 alloy with their triple triangle frame design for the ultimate in trail riding performance. Plus, this aggressive hardtail mountain bike is equipped with SR Suntour suspension, a Shimano 2x9-Speed drivetrain and Tektro disc brakes."

Would this be a good starter bike for my wife or are there better alternatives out there? Something that might be a better price/quality point?

The Vitus I linked above is a little more for a much better bike. 29" wheels might be too big depending on how tall she is. There's a Women's variant with 27" wheels:

That would be a really decent starter bike. (edited)

Is a good alternative with an air spring/hydraulic brakes.

The GT avalanche has both mechanical and hydraulic brakes mentioned which is odd. (edited)

I can't see where it says mechanical. But your vitus find is a good bike I think.I think It is lighter as well

Yep. Gumtree is full of bikes in my area.

Halfords just reported that cycling sales are down 21% but if you read the detail the budget to mid range bike sales must have fallen off a cliff.

Plus I read that Shimano have being laying off staff as have a couple of major UK bike builders.

I have an older version of this bike that cost around £600 at the time. Excellent bike, had no issues and no maintenance, still runs like day one. Bargain deal

Heavy as pig iron, but does the job for a covid cycle. Picked one up for £150 2nd. Swapped the tyres out and no issues bar I can max out the gearing pretty quick so isn't a speed machine but alright for upto 30 miles on trails / back paths.

Thanks op. I have been looking for a MTB and for the price this looks good. Very limited stock for medium and larger frames and I mean limited. I purchased the medium and I think it said only two left. Thanks again

Do these come built or you need to build? (edited)
    Minstadave's avatar
Built but you need to attach pedals and straighten the handle bars.

Is 29inch wheels too big for my son who is 5ft 2inches?

Stand over only 12mm more. The issue is the heavier wheel and longer wheelbase. For a casual rider no real difference to 27.5 wheels. Slightly less responsive but they tend to be faster cross country. Is he on 26” wheels now?

I love how they describe their ugly welding and design as a "triple triangle" to try and make it sound like a good thing.

crap. better out there for the price.
forks are rubbish, and look for a 1x9 gears. instead of a 2x.

just two things id look for slightly better.

Do you have anything in mind to suggest instead of this for the same price? What's the benefit of 1x9 Vs 2x?
