American author L. Frank Baum wrote the classic story "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" in 1900.

The book became very popular and spawned a Broadway musical, the 1939 movie, and thirteen sequels. Until 2019, it is estimated more than 10 million copies of the novel have been sold.

The novel is a modern fairy tale with a distinctly American setting, a delightfully levelheaded and assertive heroine, and engaging fantasy characters, the story was enormously popular and became a classic of children’s literature.

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" consists of twenty-four chapters that tell the story of Dorothy’s arrival in Oz and her adventures in that magical country.

Mentioned many times on here, i'm sure, but just a reminder that for all out of copyright works (such as this) they can be downloaded legally, for free, from the Project Gutenberg website in a range of formats:

Frank L Baum possibly intended The Wizard of Oz to be an allegory..

The scarecrow is farming. Farming has lost its head. Tin man is industry. Industry has lost its heart. The cowardly lion is the politician, all talk no action. The wizard is the president or prime minister, people behind the curtains pulling the levers. The yellow brick road is gold.. money.. her shoes are silver in the book.. gold and silver.. wizard of Oz.. wizard of ounces... (edited)
