I used to go to my local beach in the summer. It could be very lucrative going in the evening, finding all the bits and pieces that had been lost during the day.
I used to find around £30 a night in change and then there was jewelry, penknives, ladies powder compacts, all sorts.
Of course there used to be loads of junk too like pop can ring pulls, who remembers those? , foil from wrapping sandwiches, chewing gum wrappers, etc.
The coins and jewelry started to drop off and penknives disappeared altogether and then local idiots started threatening me and once tried to take my kit, do that was enough.
I had a good few years out of it and the detector more than paid for itself.
Just remember that you're seen as a geek and weirdo if you do take this hobby up, which makes you a target nowadays unfortunately.

Thanks for your comment. It sounds like you had some good times. Anyway, it's cool being a geek. (edited)

Where in the UK is the best place to find gold? The only thing I ever found was an old, rusty, corrugated metal roof sheet!

I go magnet fishing in streams and rivers I find in local woodland. It's a lot easier concealing a magnet and rope than it is a 4 foot long metal rod and disc shaped head including pointer, shovel etc etc. I started in 2014 and after a decade of doing this hobby I've found a total of nothing, not even a coin. Sorry for wasting anyone's time reading this thinking magnet fishing was the best alternative to finding wealth, but it isn't, not that I know as I've never done magnet fishing I just watched a video of it on YouTube, or was it Tiktok, I forget!

You won't find coins as they're not made of iron and therefore won't be magnetic. Same with gold, silver and aluminium.
