MacOS is a fantastic OS and often better for "Pro" users than Windows. These machines are obviously are not something your average home user needs. Content creators, photographers, music and video production, 3D modelling - this is what Macbook Pro's are aimed at, and where they really shine. Editing 4k or 8K footage is really where these M1 devices shine. It's a very intensive task that these really excel at.

By comparing this one with previous MacBook Pro's, Under £1600 is really really good price for what you get. It's a huge upgrade over the previous models( especially when compared to before M1 era)
    Nice find OP. Heat added

And that's exactly the type of people this machine is aimed at.

Well, mac doesn't support most games and it doesn't have a dedicated GPU, so I assume you mean it's aimed at people who often do very heavy editing work while they are away from power outlets? Pretty niche market for such a popular laptop. I think most people just buy it because its a high spec Apple laptop.

Unfortunately not as they have said it has to be purchased together with a device from the apple education store. It might be worth asking as well as that was 2 years ago.

This will be my go-to machine for work and personal and will need quick fixes - am I better off paying the premium to buy directly from Apple or to even go for AppleCare? Would be good to hear anyone's experiences with Edu Store!

I havent had any experience with edustore warranty as I did not have any claims but I still also bought Applecare as I feel that based on my previous experiences I would benefit from the extra protection. Whenever I had sold my previous apple products with apple care I also asked for a pro rated refund which was easy.

To add to the data, having been someone who avidly watched this thread when waiting for mine.

I ordered a base 14”, Space Grey on 7th Nov and it arrived 25th Nov.

I received a ParcelForce text message the day before at ~4pm as others have said, no despatch email from Edustore.

My order on Edustore still says “in progress” but it’s here.

Hope this puts some others minds at ease!

Not impressed and regret not just paying extra to buy from Apple. Hopefully we are covered by PayPal or credit card if this never turns up.

After I pushed them for more info, I got an email saying I was 25th in the queue.
They might just be making it up, who knows?
They also said they don’t know when they are going to receive deliveries from apple. They usually just get 24hrs notice apparently.

Really disappointing, and now apple don’t have them delivered until early January, unless you find one in an apple shop.

It works out at £250 ish more for the baseline 16” max with apple education store pricing but at least we would actually have it!
It’s the lack of communication for such high ticket items that’s the issue really.
Wouldn’t harm then to send an email to let us know what’s happening…….

I've owned a 13" MBP and currently use the Intel 16" (not mine) but there's no way I could drop down in size again. I appreciate the 'smaller' model is now a 14" display but I just figure if I'm getting a Liquid Retina XDR display I may as well get the biggest one I can. Additionally it will be my main workstation so again, the bigger the better really. The fact that it comes with the full 10/16 core system is really just a bonus for me.

I like the notch... To me, you haven't really lost anything, rather they pushed the screen up around the camera, gives somewhere for the menu bar to be placed. It's not like anything much ever appears in the middle of the menu bar anyway But yeah, obviously a marmite type of thing...

You're getting no where near full use of that spec when you unplug the charger though. Possibly the best new feature of these devices is how efficient they are. Portable powerhouses.

Unless you are doing very heavy editing or gaming, you don't need to plug it in. The specs are better, in all aspects other than battery life, and it costs less money. You can't game on the Mac, so it's actually incredibly niche, and should only really appeal to people who need to do editing without access to power for many hours (basically no one)

The specs aren't even remotely close when it comes to portability. When I went from my 2020 Razer Blade to my Razer Blade Advanced, even the 100g was significantly noticeable. Yours is a full 500-600g heavier than even my laptop. It's like comparing a lightweight sports car to a van.

I looked it up just now and the Lenovo you're running gets on average 6 hours of battery life by most people's reviews (it's easy to see how biased you are towards your own machine so I can't trust your word on it), and Apple are very reliable with rating battery life so you're easily looking at 3-4x the battery life on the Apple machine at a fraction of the weight of a Lenovo.

Aside from that Lenovo have horrendous customer service as I found out when I was trying to get my cousin's ThinkPad repaired over the summer. I've had one through work years and years ago but that was only hassle free because of the corporate maintenance package and it seems like Lenovo build quality has nosedived since then.

Let me explain this whole situation to you.No dedicated graphics is plenty …Let me explain this whole situation to you.No dedicated graphics is plenty for those tasks that don't require a powerful dedicated card, and there are plenty of those. 5700u has a pretty powerful inbuilt card. Price under 500 quid for a basic model (8/512) with decent battery life. For those rare cases that require a dedicated card like professional rendering etc I suggested a 3050ti and no, it's not 1500 quid. it is 600+ quid. Six hundred. Again a basic model, probably not the best screen, but similar impact as the 2000 macs. Do you see the difference in price? The long battery life situation. How many people will benefit from that? Do you know many people that work for countess hours away from a wall socket? I guess no. I think new macs bring good improvements in this segment. But few will benefit. Now the claim that regular PC will run out of juice with a dedicated card. For some cases I agree (heavy use of 3d non stop). But for occasional use of the powerful dedicated card it will be ok, they will not run out of juice. I believe omst workloads do not consist of purely rendering and 3d stuff. Also there are low power dedicated cards like Nvidia 350 and 450 cards (forgot their name), as well as the 3050/3050ti.So no real difference from the new apple laptop apart from rare use cases with working from battery with heavy 3d load. I think this is very niche. It's not a game changer people need to know what exactly they are buying and this is overpriced for most people who simply believe apple advertising.

That's all well and good but in the real world here, I have owned macbooks since 2012. My first one lasted six years, my second one I am on now. I use my mac around 7 hours a day, at least 5 days a week. I haul it around in a backpack, it gets chucked around and if there was an RSPCA for PC's I'd be in trouble!

The day my Macbook 2012 finally gave up, it was still pretty much as fast as the day I bought it. I'd gone through 3 (I think), operating systems for free, at the time windows were still charging for this. The screen was still the best in the office, the battery life was still great, the keyboard and touchpad, again were the best in the office.

In that time, I watched other colleagues go through multiple laptops, their batteries would die or be next to useless after 18 months, they'd be on outdated operating systems, the machines were heavy and thick. I'm now on a 3 year old 2018 model which is again ploughing through work with a breeze, never gives me any grief and just means I can work!

I use a windows machine for gaming, it cost me £1,200 and is 18 months old. Already I am getting BSOD's on it due to some hardware issue I cannot track down due to some random error message when it crashes.

This is before we even get into the whole MacOS v Windows debate.

People say Macs are expensive/over priced for what you get, I disagree entirely. If you abosultely have to have a robust, portable, reliable and efficient working machine, I really struggle to see what else is out there. I looked at the Microsoft surface versions, they are lovely, but when you spec them up to a similar mac, they really are not any cheaper at all, and reading long term reviews online, they are not without their reliability issues either.

I fully understand when you look at the price and think, wow, that's a lot for what you get, but try one for a year, work on it everyday, aduse it, haul it around to meetings and presentations and maybe then make a judgemet on whether it's over priced. There's a reason people say once you go mac you never go back!

Lmao. Absolute state. Three different reputable sources don't even list …Lmao. Absolute state. Three different reputable sources don't even list mac as the top two spots - because it isn't. If I had suggested the laptops they listed instead of posting the lists themselves, you would have disputed that too. Enjoy your grossly overpriced hardware. Can't you just accept that it simply, objectively, definitively is not 'the best' laptop for editing (or anything else other than battery life). If you love Apple, fine, I genuinely could not care less, people can burn their own cash however they please, but that is what they're doing, burning cash.

You don't define your argument well, you state there's 3 different reputable sources but haven't put in the effort to list them. What counts is evidence not words.

    ymcinema.com/202…ro/

The M1 Max Pro on its own can edit more streams than a 2019 Mac Pro with an Afterburner card. That's some serious video editing power. Please list a laptop any laptop Linux or Windows based that can video edit with that performance.

I'm not an Apple user, I don't use macOS anymore. You started your comment with "Lmao. Absolute state" so no one taking you seriously. Just want to call out people who like to misinform others.

Let's have a guess at some of your sources, the top 3 or 4 results are similar to the one I've linked below >

    laptopmag.com/uk/…ing

Poor journalism they don't even list a Macbook with an M1 chip and they've been out 12 months already.

Also define video editing in terms of software, need to use Sony Vegas Pro? That's Windows only, need to use Final Cut that's macOS only.

So when making a judgement call and basing it on populist journalism at least do the research with a balanced viewpoint.

    Well I finally got mine!
I'm not here to gloat - just giving credit where it's due. TheEdustore were excellent in chasing up the delivery company and when I met the driver today (Primeline) he explained he couldn't find my house and had he done so I'd have had my MacBook last Thursday, ah well.
Turns out he was only 50 yards or so from my door! He came to what he thought was the end of the road but had he just gone round the corner he'd have seen my house.

Anyhow, as I say, props to Edustore and for getting me their phone number.
The issue with lack of transparency or communication is still a tad annoying but I guess that's just how they roll. (edited)
