So it's an advantage that the G300 finally got updated to the 2011 version of Android this week?

Shocking thing is , when you start using the phone....its really really good OS. High recommend, personally I think Microsoft should change the name of the os and remarket it..But like the Xbox it had slow start and then bang....people cant get a enough of it...especially the kinnect

I simply can't get my head around these WP/Android/IOS debates that crop up in every single phone thread.

You buy each phone and the attached OS for different reasons, what's the point in crying about it?

    Voted Hot, thanks OP.

If you have a valid PAYG number/sim then you can PAYG upgrade instore without the need for top up.

lol, you telling people that similar priced droids gets updates to newest OS?!

This is getting updates, it will get 7.8 which is fair enough, MS could say they would deploy WP 8 to this phones but cut features like others do (Apples) but they decided to say look, older gen phone not getting wp8, only 7.8... nothing wrong with that.

This phone is a really really good phone, fast, doenst lag, apps works pretty well... This would be better than ANY droid at this price....

ps. My wife owns a Lumia 710, she loves it.

No need to worry about software updates - Nokia have announced they will continue to support the 710:

    conversations.nokia.com/201…es/

"After introducing the first smartphones in the Nokia Lumia family to be built on Windows Phone 8, there is one message that needs to be made loud and clear: existing Lumia owners also have plenty to look forward to and are definitely not being left behind.
The current Lumia range of smartphones will continue to be supported by Nokia with a new updated user interface, new features, apps and upgrades.

In short, there is everything that you currently love about your Lumia, plus new developments coming in the future to help ensure that your Lumia experience will remain the envy of your friends!"

Why would you want to do that? Surely if you want to go for a Windows phone, you therefore like the Windows system. The fact that it may not be the latest is utterly irrelevant to that and switching to an alternative just because you want the version number on the settings menu to be the latest seems rather silly!

Seems like you have to buy extra payg vouchers. Not ideal if you simply want the handset to use on an existing contract....
  16. Gooner74's avatar
The thing with smartphones and other technology is, people will go for what suits how they want to use it. Some people just want a really slick interface which covers 90% of what consumers want, but maybe locked down if you're into customisation (iPhone). Others may have need/want to tinker with their handsets (Android), and have a great choice of handsets from basic specifications if they don't need much in the way of pocket computer, to a fully featured top of the range Galaxy III type. WP7 is a late attempt by MS to re-enter the smartphone market, and anyone that's used it, should really admit it's a halfway house, something to bridge the outdated Windows Mobile, and Windows Phone 8 that will be much more cohesive with the desktop equivalent. I feel for anyone who bought the Lumia 900 - within weeks Nokia/MS announced it would not be updated to WP8. Still a great phone (if limited due to features that were never built into Windows Phone 7), in terms of it being lag free, responsive, having a great media player, email & social media features and Nokia's excellent Sat Nav, music and other apps. But not the complete article when you compare all the features iPhone/Android can provide.
Perhaps they are too late to the market to ever get more than 10 or 15% share? Perhaps Nokia will never regain their previous dominance in this industry.
Nonetheless, instead of recognising the above, people seem to fall into tribal groupings - they're just smartphones, and they all have their pro's and con's. I've had personal experience of a low budget WP7 phone and a low budget Android phone (Galaxy Europa). The Europa could do more (various apps that will never be available on WP7, being able to set independent volume settings), but was unresponsive and felt like a low-spec phone. The WP7 phone did not lag/crash at all, even if it didn't have all-singing and dancing features.

PS Xbox was released in 2001 or 2002? MS made a big loss on it, and it wasn't until Xbox 360 that they really started to build up momentum. So the previous poster makes a good point, it did have a slow start, but MS have the money to play the long game.

All new apps won't work unless the developer maintains/updates the old version for 7.x.

But realisticly the userbase for 7.x is so small most developers will redo their apps for 8 and drop support for 7.x very quickly

The fact you didn't know Nokia was already on it's last legs before it switched to Windows (though I personally liked Symbian - it's maps were incredible at the time, and still beat Google today) phone speaks volumes of your level of insight into the market...

Callum, don't even bother with this nonsense PhilK.
Typically, here or on Engadget comments - you will find Android fanboys with their childish view of the world.
Rarely an iPhone user, or Blackberry user - angry Android fans. They think they've seen the light (like Linux fanboys)
They are a vocal minority. Several posts on every Windows Phone deal. If they have no interest they should just not view the deal, but its like a war, or a religion to them. They need to grow up a whole lot.
The fact this deal is fairly hot (its been cheaper) shows that the majority don't agreed or wish for their juvenile posts in every WP deal. But alas, Trolls and Haters are allowed to post. The perils of the Internet.

Heated for price. Also these phones are on display in most stores so you can also have a play before you commit.

I got this from Carphone Warehouse at this price a few weeks ago. The phone's pretty good, Windows Phone is capable enough, although I'd say not as advanced as Android. I would recommend this phone, for a solidly built and capable device, although the battery life is quite poor, sometimes it doesn't last me a day.

Sorry but that is utter tripe. What (almost) killed nokia was not keeping up with the times and adapting with smart phones. These lumias is them trying to rectify that. They will never again enjoy the success of 10 years ago but at least they are in the game again. I have an iphone, and love my android tablet so am no windows fanboy but i have high hopes for windows 8 and think 7.5 is a decent and effecient os.

@ niceguyrichiec l would rather have a snappy 7.8 that try to shoehorn windows8 onto hardware not reallycapable. 7.8 will have many 8 features and comeone really? Android is the most fragmented os outthere. Loads of phones do not get official updates and you cant count unofficial hacks, and for the record ics is not the most recent android os.
  37. SilverBlack's avatar
You can get it at CPW for £89.95 on PAYG upgrade all you need is payg sim thats been active for 6 months.
  38. niceguyrichy's avatar
i know that ICS isn't the most recent, but it's still slick and snappy, and JB isn't hardly supported on anything properly yet
the point is that there are [/u]no[/u] updates coming for the 710, in any way shape or form, whereas even unofficially you're in much better shape if you go droid

and just btw, for God sake it's written right there next to you, it's "richy". with a 'y'

So, give me the low-down on this. I want to get a Windows phone because I am a programmer. I will already be producing apps for Android, but I'd want a Windows phone on the cheap at first. I heard the new Windows mobile OS will not be backwards compatible with 7, and vice-versa. So will this run 8? And will using a cooked (hacked) version have any limitations?

Thanks. Last time I had a Windows phone was with Windows Mobile 6.
