I used to be able to on my mi box and firestick but they don’t support it anymore…! 👎🏻If they do do you just use kodi or another app? It’s mainly for 1080p files with DTS / HD audio.

Yup does all the audio formats including HD/IMAX etc. My Denon AVR-X4500H confirms this by showing the format on the display. Mine is the older Shield (2017 I believe) too so this will definitely support them too. If I remember correctly, couple years back when I bought the Shield, it was the only box on the market which supported every single audio format including pass-through. Back then Amazon’s latest Firestick/box missed out some formats, and Apple TV box missed out others. The Shield was the only one which supported everything. Things may have changed now, or they may not have, but there’s no worries with this.

Only thing putting me off upgrading to this one is that I suspect there will be a new one soon.

Edit: I use Plex server and Plex client app but I’m pretty sure Kodi will do the same too - it does pass-through after all. (edited)

Amazon fire stick 4k max or this and why?

Depends what you use it for and how wealthy you are feeling. If you just stream Netflix or Amazon prime and don't care about upscaling the 4k stick will probably be fine. The upscaling to 4k on this is quite astounding, I'm gobsmacked how they do this. This also allows streaming of games from the web and from your local PC. It has a full Plex server license built in (IE hardware transcoding). Also, having an Ethernet port, it will stream full 4k videos with uncompressed (IE DTS hd / Dolby digital truhd) without buffering or transcoding from a local Nas or pc, something the stock will struggle to do over WiFi. I’ve got an older synology disk station with my media on. I think it can run a plex server but not sure how it works to be honest…Thank you 🏻

You're most welcome! If you've already got network attached storage then this is definitely what you want. I have a Synology disk station too (can't remember the model, DS918+ I think) but anyway it also support Plex hardware transcoding, but the Nvidia Shield is in a different league for Plex hardware transcoding. As others have said in this thread, the Shield is licensed to do hardware transcoding for Plex - most other devices that will run Plex server will only do software transcoding - that's the difference because in most cases software transcoding just fries the device.

When you get yours, definitely install Plex server on the Shield - if I remember correctly it's already installed as part of the base image on the Shield. Kodi is good for some things, but Plex for your movies is very powerful in what it can do, plus it grabs all the media data from the net and presents you with very nice looking libraries.

I'd advise that you also setup a separate user account on your Synology. Just a basic account with limited access to your media shares and use this account on your Shield to access the NAS. It's not essential, but it's always best practice to have separate user accounts (with limited access) for separate things rather than putting your admin login into the Shield.

If you need any help, just shout in private message.

I’ve opted to get a 2019 Pro for the Samsung as I’m so impressed with the one in my front room. The Samsung TV has HDR10+ and soundbar has Atmos. I decided to plump for another as the only thing I can see Nvidia supporting in their next Shield over and above what we have already is I8K support. I’m not concerned about that for the next few years.

That's very true actually - good point.
Unless being as they are becoming renown for the box to get for Plex server support, they may decide to put an even more powerful chipset in for more powerful 4k transcoding and therefore even better support for multiple transcoding streams. I appreciate not many people would care for this, but I actually utilise Plex server to its fullest. My Shield is fed from my NAS. My siblings who live in their own properties have accounts to my Plex library therefore the transcoding and multiple streams becomes very important in my use scenario especially when their AV equipment may not fully support the native requirements of the file being played, or the bitrate is extremely high. All my movies are 4K HDR, full HD audio blah blah blah up to 80Gb files - you get the picture. The little Shield can soon start to sweat a bit

To answer your question about Plex. I have a Synology NAS with all my media but I run the Plex Server from the Shield. It's faster than the NAS for transcoding. What I've also done is installed Kodi but use PlexKodiConnect. This way it uses Kodi to play media files but uses Plex Server as backend to the media. Much better way meaning if you start playing something on Kodi use can pick up where you left off on another device. It's basically using Plex but Kodi is the front-end and player.

Amazon fire stick 4k max or this and why?

Personally I sided down with the 4k Max. I stumped for a shield pro and whilst it was snappy and done everything I wanted, I never used it to its full potential and had no need to, turns out I'm not much into gaming. I bought the 4k Max on BF, and I'm thoroughly impressed with it for a fraction of the cost of the Shield. If all you're going to do is stream (and happy not having the AI Upscale) then I think the Shield will be overkill and the Max will suit your needs perfectly.

The 2015 & 2017 boxes are still great devices and still receive support. The upscaling introduced on this box is good, but as I use my shield for pretty much everything I don't even notice it anymore, maybe I would if it broke down.

I'll stand by my assertation that it's the best streaming box available. Heard many good things about the AppleTV, but I'm no longer really in the Apple ecosystem so have never really researched it.

I own the 4K & the 4K Max Firesticks and for the price, they are great (I do need a custom launcher, though). I have tried streaming 30/40GB atmos rips on them and they have struggled, but to be honest I didn't configure them too much due to my dependence on the Shield Pro so maybe there was a workaround.

It's all entirely subjective though, I'm sure there are plenty of people who have used the Shield and thought it wasn't worth the upgrade on whatever they had previously used.

    TL;dr - Horses for courses

I bought a top of the line Sony smart TV 2 years ago. It’s dog slow. Many of them are, because manufacturers cheap out on things like this.
I want my TV to last me at least 10 years so unfortunately devices like this are necessary.

Not to mention if you buy a TV with locked down system / lacking apps, you can sideload apps onto this thing

Those on the fence wondering whether it’s worth going for this just for the sake of taking advantage of the good price, it’s worth knowing that this (2019) model supports Dolby Vision. May not be important to you now, but it will be if you later purchase a DV compatible TV too. Older Shields don’t do DV. A lot of people only look at the audio side, but be mindful of video too.

Unrelated, but I hate that the Plex app on iOS devices doesn’t support all the Dolby Vision profiles (a whole new discussion in itself!! - who would have thought - many flavours of DV). Profile 5 works fine, but any DV content in profile 7 and it’s green/magenta all over the place. I’m talking on a 2021 M1 12.9 iPad Pro. For anyone who cares, use Infuse on iOS instead of Plex - supports profile 5 and 7. 1600 nits is no joke! Once it goes that bright, you know about it! What a brilliant display. Just a shame there’s so much tech now with so many compatibility requirements to check off!

If you're satisfied with the speed of your smart TV, enjoy.

I've got the non-pro version and the difference between it and my inbuilt smart TV streaming ability is night and day. The upscaling works very well also.

This honestly is probably one of the best things I've ever bought. Paired with a wired connection, it's almost flawless. 4K HDR via Plex is absolutely spot on (Dolby Vision passes through btw), Gamestream is excellent with barely any latency and it's Android powered so it has pretty much every app you need.

The Gamestream software itself needs some work (it still feels like it's in beta from a UI and game adding perspective) but in terms of the actual streaming quality, I can't really fault it.

Most standard users don't need this but for 'power users' this is a must have. Well worth the money spent.

Sorry, I was wrong, it doesn't only depend on the app to record. The nvidia shield will allow you to record the screen and live TV. It is within the nvidia shield settings by enabling it to record the screen.

I’m only seeing an issue with large 4K REMUX files with a high bitrate. I could just carry on using my firestick for now. Because as you say i can to switch between subs and audio types to get them running via direct play and not transcoding - which tbh I also rarely have to do on the firestick as it only struggles with TrueHD audio. Smart TV apps just can’t cope with a combination of things has to be .srt subs and ac3 audio only I believe which is okay if you are happy downloading (lower quality) compressed 4K files where these file types are included. But since I spent 1.4K on an Oled tv…. I want to get the best quality movies playing with no issues. Its not urgent so I might just wait until a new model gets released but this may never happen

Similar problem but I resolved most of that by buying a usb to Ethernet 1gbE adapter. It just works, you can’t see on the tv what it’s IP is but it works perfectly and can now play files with high bitrate 4k remuxes.

I'm not sure that will be the case. Mainly due to pandemic/chip shortage concerns. I'd be (happily) surprised if there was was a model announced in 2022. AV1 certification, at least an extra GB ram, faster chipset for emulation, HDMI 2.1, wi-fi 6, USB C etc etc are all improvements that would be welcome. Most likely you have downloaded a Dolby Vision encoded file, but your TV is not capable of supporting Dolby Vision. You’ll need to get the ‘regaular’ HDR or HDR+ file. If your TV doesn’t support Dolby Vision then avoid downloading files with DV or DoVi in their file name in future.
