Are these good enough to redact text on envelopes etc?

You will have some success with these. However, when new, I find permanent markers (these included) are only good for obliterating text with some papers/ ink combinations - generally porous non glossy paper and text. As any marker get old or start running out of ink they become less effective.
I don't bother with markers and shred any paperwork with personal details on, including parcel labels which can mostly be peeled off.
