sorted byFly to Florida instead for sunny beaches, cheaper prices and a much happier environment
Was about to say the same. It’s eye wateringly expensive, even if you think you can do it on the cheap, just eating cheap food. Really hurts when you are going to a fast food place and paying £15+ for a hotdog and fries (that was the cheapest on the menu).
There are still $1 pizza slices but they are not great. You can get better $2 to $3 slices if you venture over west to around 8th and 9th Av between 40th and 42nd, or on the East Side near Astor Place if you head to Ave C.
Wallgreens and CVS are super expensive now for everything. Own brand toothpaste was about $6.70.
I used to go to NY a lot, but I doubt I'll be back for a long time. Worth a visit if you haven't been.
I was there in the glory days of over $2 to the £1. But it isn't just that, prices there have also increased massively. (edited)
(There are a few places. They're all actually great!)
This is great news. Not only did Norwegian keep prices low on all airlines for transatlantic, their Premium Economy had really great seats. I hope Norse use the same configuration.
Basically, if you want fine dining, be prepared to pay. If you can get along on street food and $1 pizza, you'll save a fortune. (edited)
Florida deal HERE in case you missed it. Cheaper than NYC! Most dates are still valid.
Even those single slice Pizza places were about £7 a slice! We ended up buying sandwiches in Wallgreens and the occasional Subway sandwich.
Best value for food was finding a decent bagel shop for breakfast.
I'm a big fan of cities. Would hate to be lay on a beach in the sun. It's just not for me.
In New York I always visit Liberty Island, and have been up to the statue's crown 3 times, just because I can. I've also been up all the major skyscrapers several times each, met celebrities, gone to a baseball game, been on an American TV show, flown in a helicopter above the city with my legs hanging out the side, been to a music concert, watched a Broadway show, done day trips to Niagara Falls and Washington DC, etc. New York is an incredible place and my all-time favourite city!
Food actually isn't a concern of mine. I just eat simple things because I'm too excited and buzzing for the city to even worry about it. I've actually forgotten to eat before! I'm out early morning til late at night and don't sleep much on holidays. Can't wait to go back in September, along with lots of other cities, over 17 nights. (edited)
This… we used to go there every year until the pandemic happened and there’s still cheap places to eat even with this crap exchange rate. You just need to avoid tourist central.
Here’s one example…
dallasbbq.com/
Prices vary by location so avoid Times Square but you can get half a chicken served with cornbread and fries or another side for $11.99. So with tax and tip that’s about £12. Or get the same meal with their early bird special between 11 and 5 and add a soup for $9.99) or $16.99 for two).
It’s not gourmet cuisine but it’s good simple food and probably works out cheaper than Nando’s!
Also if anything goes wrong on the day there will be no replacement aircraft to get you from A to B
Don't know where you went, we were there earlier this month & there's loads of $1 pizza slice places around, says for margarita so dress for toppings, the ones centrally tend to be more but not £7. Even Joe's on Broadway was £4 or so and that was with toppings.
Go to Rudy's dive bar and you'll get a free one with every drink! (edited)
I lived in London for 15 years until October last year. Cheap as chips compared to New York.
Don't forget the resort fees on top of the hotel cost. (edited)
Just back and found loads of cheap places to eat. Been many times and didnt find it any more expensive than past trips.
You need to be fully vaccinated and take a covid test day before. We have been back 3 times since the borders opened and used this company who are brilliant - cost about £18 and you do the test via video and before the call ends you get your email with the certificate saying you are good to fly basically. Think they are called DocHq and code was RETURN30 (edited)
A 9 abreast 787 is worse than a 9 abreast 777. It's the 10 abreast 777s that also get stick. Economy on this won't be a dream; it'll just be the same cramped conditions (width) as all the other 9 abreast 787s.
I found a budget hotel in 2019! £42 a night in Chinatown. Some dude pinned me against the wall and threatened to slit my throat Sketchy area at night but it didn't put me off.
I know of far too many people that only eat around Times Square area then complain of prices. You want cheap food; eat where the locals eat. (edited)
For me it's fun visiting the city and seeing all famous places. For example, at night, I went to a place next to the river where you can seat and see many bridges from there. The views are amazing.
But I also paid for visiting the roof of one of the tallest buildings. Views are insane!!
I went to the statue of Liberty.
And many other places. Some were free and others where paid only entry.
What's wrong then about doing this and finding cheap restaurants? :/
I'm going to New York this August for 5 nights. I'm intending on eating from McDonald's mostly. At least, for once, it will be the local cuisine!
Exchange rate is such a killer now.
You did just compare a city with a country.
London has sky high prices for everything especially for tourists.
Imagine thinking that everybody has exactly the same opinion and likes exactly the same places... 🤦♂️
I hear there are many cheap food outlets - you just need to avoid the ones attracting holiday makers. Do some research on Google, or make sandwiches everyday - you dont need to eat out.
Go to Queens or Brooklyn keep off Manhatten.
Same here went end mar and gone are the days of bargains in shops and little things like food etc are so much more expensive than london, obviously the poor £/$ doesnt help.
If you can get a sale fair with Virgin / BA etc, by the time add baggage to this deal it will be about the same cost.
I'd say to each their own.
Not been to NYC since late 90s - but still remember how rude/awkward some people came over as - it's almost as if they were playing a part in a movie and had to put on a show
Pretty sure it's a similar idea with the premium economy, might even be same aircraft!
They are indeed the same aircraft!
I went in Nov last year and was pretty staggered at how expensive food and drink was, even before the poor exchange rate. I had a great time, but I probably wouldn’t go again until the £ strengthens.
