Review" Not only full of insights but also surprisingly funny. Read it to understand why the world became fat, how to reverse the epidemic--and how to stay thin yourself."
--Andreas Eenfeldt, MD, Founder of Diet doctor.com"Dr. Jason Fung's explanation of insulin resistance and the accompanying insulin model of obesity is original, brilliant and game changing."
--Zoë Harcombe, Obesity researcher, author of The Harcrombe Diet

"A fantastic book that exposes some of the world's most pervasive myths about obesity and weight management. A must read for anyone interested in the science of diet."
--Kris Gunnars, nutrition researcher

"In The Obesity Code, Dr. Jason Fung triumphs in explaining the core underlying causes of obesity and manages to simplify it in a way that anybody can understand. If more doctors and people were able to understand these causes and implement Dr. Fung's actionable advice then we would be able to start reversing the obesity epidemic tomorrow."
--Sam Feltham, USA Today World Fitness Elite Trainer of the Year

"Jason Fung (born in 1973) is a Canadian nephrologist and functional medicine advocate who promotes a low-carbohydrate high-fat diet and intermittent fasting.[1][2][3] Fung disputes the current saturated fat guidelines."

So then you have 3 different descriptions of why there is an Obesity epidemic. There isn't a one size fits all solution but it appears to be the mass adoption of corporate based food entities and radically changing lifestyle that contribute to the Obesity Epidemic. The obvious superficial advice > "Duh just eat less and exercise more" does not work and has a high rate of failure. Obesity is more complex than this even though in simple terms it has a strong element of truth, but it's the wrong way to consider as the main contributing factor to Obesity.

Another way to describe the problem is "A Calorie isn't a Calorie" meaning that Calories affect metabolism differently based on which macronutrient bias they come from. Carbohydrate, Fat and Protein provide calories but a calorie from each of these groups is only the same in terms of energy but not in terms of how the body utilises the calories.

As a high-protein keto/IF devotee, I find Dr Fung one of the most inspirational scientists in the field of health.

It's worth noting that low carb diets and any form of fasting are NOT recommended purely as weight loss fads. They are lifestyle overhauls to improve all-round health so you continue to eat that way even after losing weight.

I use keto to control my lupus but an added bonus is that I also lost 10 stone along the way (20 years of steroid medication plus a sugar addiction equals a whole load of obesity).

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take control of their health, even if not overweight.

What kind of intermittent fasting worked for you?

For a while I stuck to the daily 16h fast whilst eating healthy and exercising, and while I didn't shed weight left right and center it did wonders for my mental health and general cardiovascular health but I certainly felt stressed that I needed to cram in all the daily recommended nutrients in 2 meals and 1 snack...

I fasted for twelve and a half days on just black or green tea/ herbal tea / black coffee and tap water. I went from 15 stone 5 lbs to 13 St 7 lbs. I wasn't hungry after four days. I thought I might get to 21 days but someone mentioned it looked like I was walking in slomotion haha so I had some soup.

This works, but a terrible idea. While you will lose weight, you are putting your body into survival mode. This is to the detriment of what your body determines the least important to what it needs just to survive. So your muscles, your metabolism will drop. It could lead to other health complications, hopefully you had some source of vitamins too?

The simple truth is, if you eat 1 less calorie than your body requires for a day you will lose weight, if you eat 1 more you will gain weight. (edited)

"I lived on nothing but air, and did 3 marathons a day"
This is all we hear about weight loss.... The key is these people only do it for a short period, after which it all piles back on + often more.
We are commercially doomed to ill heath and obesity.... Mega companies make more money out of us cattle this way.
