Polaroid HDMI DVD player £22 at Asda direct (free C&C)
Found 17th JunFound 17th Jun
Been on the hunt for a HDMI DVD player and came across this deal - cheapest I can find for a HDMI DVD player
Get dealGet deal

That's why the PS2 was an attractive option, cheaper than other DVD players at the time and had the benefit of playing some games!

NO they have ALL gone in landfill ;)

Like the Blaupunkt posted the other day, Polaroid went bust and the name was bought up by a tat merchant to gull people into thinking the tat made in his sweatshop was quality gear. it isnt.

No apologies needed .

Do people still own dvds

The Sainsbury's one showing at £26

Would cost more for the scart to HDMI adapter, assuming such a device exists.

Surely this is better.. https://store.hmv.com/technology/technology-accessories/sony-dvp-sr170-dvd-player?gclid=CjwKCAjwjZjZBRAZEiwAPeLSK2jSPSRMM11lV-VxWhV4X2Yw3l6mrn-0ejCGjd-bXAxa4gj1pomLLhoCuRYQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Now you see they ask us to be nice to newbies; which is why I didnt say anything. I remember when the name meant quality, and not a POS made in a Turkish sweatrshop.

Dolby Vision firmware update is out now

My point is that it’s everything from the DAC onwards (the analogue outputs etc). In a 4K blu ray player like this, where the information leaving the player is EXACTLY the raw digital data that was on the disc (and assuming the transport is at least capable of reading that data, which isn’t asking much), then all players are equal. In this case it’s exactly like a computer hard drive - if all the bits get through, the file loads; if they don’t , it doesnt. Your MP3 files would have no more ‘colour’ or ‘presence’ with a better hard drive.

It's alot more than the dac..... And anyone that puts a £40 cd player in a hi end system needs shooting.

This isn't a 4k player, it won't be able to read 4k discs. This is just an upscaler.

So reading the comments IF there is no difference between 4K players can I buy this https://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/samsung-bd-j6300-smart-3d-4k-upscaling-blu-ray-player-w-wi-fi-8495-magicvision-2912406 and save myself over £100 with no loss of picture quality?

No, just modern day children. I'm not one for technology myself but even getting kids feet measured in Clark's is done on an tablet. Each to their own I suppose, I guess the heat or lack of it says it all.

i'm sure they are all ipad pro's....

Maybe things are a little different where you live but I don't know any children in our circle of family, friends, work colleagues etc that don't have tablets and they are so affordable. Anyway I'm off to watch a DVD lol

cheap 9" tablets? lol

Or download a movie for nothing. Or if you want to do it properly for that or less. Why troop around a car boot for a scratched DVD when you can download? What century is this?

After doing a bit of search I realised the AV receiver of this system is rather basic and is something I would not buy, I will be happy to spend around £200-300 more and get proper system , but I understand not everyone is as enthusiastic about sound as I am. That being said I am gonna try and offer you some advice on how to set it up : firstly get a proper source like blu ray player, the sound from TV broadcasts is very low bit rate so it will sound bad anyway, connect the speakers make sure the colours match on the receiver so they are not out of phase. In the receiver change crossover values 80hrz for satellite speakers and 120hrz for the subwoofer if you can. Make sure speakers are set to small, the subwoofer is set to "use" and phase or polarity is set to "normal" not reverse. Get free spl meter for you phone, adjust all speaker levels so they all match to 75db or thereabouts. Then measure all speaker distance with tape measure to where you would sit and enter the values in the receiver so it can set the appropriate delays. Make sure the sub and 3 front speakers are along the front wall, do not put the sub more than a meter away from either front left or front right speaker. Switch off all tone controls, equalisers and DSP effects , if there is some sort of dynamic range control turn it off. In the menu of TV see if you can set ARC to bitstream rather than PCM and look for the dynamic range control again, make sure its off. After doing this try and test with at least some sort of Dolby Digital 5.1 content, like SKY Movies if you have or good HD Channel like BBC. If it sound good only then you should start experimenting with double bass functions , equalisers , tone controls and so on. If after doing this you are still not happy , by all means return it.

How have I not set them up properly? Speakers are connected to Receiver with HDMI cable going from Receiver to HDMI port supporting ARC on TV. I’ve tried tweaking the treble, bass etc. tried programs available and still... not much better than what i already have. It’s not to say the sound from this is bad. By all means it’s not. But it’s not worth what I paid for it with such little improvement in sound quality.

I was just about to be sarcastic and say if its not Logiteck speakers then it will be horrible, and voila straight away there is someone comparing AV separates to pc speakers XD XD XD . You have not set them up properly , it is very easy but if you are not sure just look online , there are plenty tutorials, btw if you connect any speakers costing gazilion pounds straight to TV via RCA they will all sound horrible. I bought my first av receiver 8 years ago Onkyo tx sr605 with onkyo entry level speakers which costed only £100 brand new and sound quality blew me away, I came from Cambridge Soundworks THX 550 5.1, good and expensive set of pc speakers at the time and there was simply no comparison. Judging sound quality is very subjective , but calling the apples pears is simply ignorance.

My wife went on holiday, I changed my 5.1 to a 7.1 8)

Really? WOW ok that's a bummer. Looks like I gotta stick with the original plan of selling the YSP-2500 & upgrading to the YSP-2700. More than twice the price but it will keep her happy.

Great small tv for the kitchen. In white or black
Get dealGet deal

Yes, absolutely, most TVs start at 32" these days, smaller sets are the exception. To be fair LCDs are so thin these days you can fit them in a lot of places you couldn't imagine having a TV before. Freezing deal though, JVC is nothing more than a Vestel budget set and 720P is very poor these days, 1080P should be the minimum and why only DVD when Bluray has been around well over a decade? Nothing against unbranded sets mind, my main TV and bedroom sets are both Vestels and work absolutely great but I got them extremely cheap as a result, here you are paying almost big name prices for a no name set....

Was on offer before xmas, i got one for the daughter November for the same price

Seems like they will wack anything on a 32" TV these days before just making them full HD!!!! Does my head in... I don't want a gigantic TV dominating the livingroom, just a 32", Full HD, good sound.... you know... like you could buy 5 years ago. (poo) (poo) (poo)

We use one whilst away on the caravan. Stick a bunch of dvds in a carry case and keeps the little ones busy. Tablets are great for streaming, when there is WiFi, but if you haven't saved a bunch of stuff on them.....which fills up in no time on a memory stick, then these are ideal. The

I've actaully been thinking about buying one of these for my 4 year old for car journeys. So much easier to take along and no need to worry about whether you have downloaded the film from Netflix or that. He has a tablet that he used but this would be easier.

Very true. Hence why I said "based on needs, setup and sensitivity to such issues".

I agree with this but would people be able to tell the difference unless the pictures were side by side? And furthermore would they necessarily prefer the correctly colour decoded picture? And how many people have a display that is correctly set up for colour?

Good point, that's loads better!

I'm continually baffled by how people can put up with all the messing-about with discs. Do you people still have cassette players too?

Actually I have both a DVD player that's about 7 years old and Blu Ray player and DVD films on both systems have exactly the same picture quality.

Sorry but cold, not especially cheap for a DVD player these days and I have no idea why anyone would bother with a DVD player at all with Bluray discs and players are so cheap and so much better and play DVDs anyway. Bluray is also MUCH better suited for modern HD sets as it matches the full HD resolution perfectly where as DVDs were really made for old SD CRT TVs so have to be scaled massively for modern sets meaning the picture will be lacking fine detail and clarity....
