Shame I could use one to travel to work with and ditch the car for commuting, I travel 2 miles on the level(ish).

But there's some kind of pavement where this would be appropriate and safer for you? Just get a bike and cycle carefully on that pavement ...IF the police ever saw you, and IF they could be arsed to stop you and IF they didn't buy your reasoning regarding safety then I'd say you've been very unlucky

I'm surprised if there is some sort of pavement that that isn't officially a cycle path of some sort. Especially if its a new bypass. The route for me into my nearest down is a designated cycle/footpath along the A12, not great especially when it dumps you at a petrol station exit and on the "wrong" side of the road, so anyone pulling out of the service station simply isn't looking for someone coming the "wrong" way! However the route alongside the A12 is fairly safe in itself, though is heading facing 3 lanes of traffic moving very fast, so not exactly pleasant, and there's no barrier either! Cycling provision in this country is generally appalling though.
