Rims are taped for tubeless but the tyres aren’t tubeless ready. So you’ll need new tyres and valves. I think you’re better off spending the extra £50 and getting the VRS with the better drivetrain (10 speed Shimano Deore) wiggle.co.uk/vit…021

The Reach on modern bikes is very long and (FOR ME) would feel way too stretched out if actually pointing it down a steep trail.. I wouldnt be able to get weight back.

100% I’ve made the costly mistake of going for a X-Large instead of L in the past, big mistake in every sense.
Always go for the smaller size if you’re in between, my opinion anyway (edited)

This is such an amazing hardtail mountain bike for £499. It even has a 1x setup now. I remember when it had a 2x setup and it was being sold for £549. I'd say get this if you're looking for a budget hardtail. (edited)

Can anyone recommend which size to go for? I'm 180 cm so on the cusp of Medium and Large. Would it feel like a stretch going for Large but gain stability, or better to go for the more comfortable Medium but have more sensitive steering?

I got the Nucleus 29VRS last year and had the same issue as you being in between sizes but the L & XL, I went for the XL thinking it'll be nice and stable and predictable and it was, but after a short while it definitely felt too big for me. Trying to do technical sections of trail on a bike that's every so slightly bigger than you want it to be is quite tricky.
I've upgraded since to a bike a size down and I much prefer it.

An old 21 speed doesn't have a significantly wider range than many modern 1x set ups.I'm currently riding a 25 year old (I mean right now - see pic, I've stopped to post this) with a sticky front shifter so effectively the bottom set don't work). It's fine for most purposes.[Image]

Im too old to adapt. I want the old school back. I must I will have it.......stamp stamp. Wow check that place out, where is it and where is the canoe parked up?

    That's Windermere.

Not a very good 1x though. 8 speed and range is only 11-42t on the rear. You could replace with 11-46t Deore though, but more cost.

Seems to be out of stock now and only the red version 29" is available at £550. Either way these are really well priced for what you are getting.

Good deal, particularly if £500 is your absolute maximum budget. But the VRS version is worth the £50 extra for its better Shimano drivetrain and Boost sized front end.

some brands fill the gap between both. Giant do too. Youll need to compare the geometry of each bike youre interested in between brands as there is no 'standard' medium, large (or med/large...) size equitable across brands, all have minor differences/interpretations (edited)

100% agree, definitely go for the VRS for an extra £50. I've had this bike, great value but had a lot of problems with the Box drivetrain. Got the Deore on my Whyte 429 and its so much better.

Depends on your route, hilly?, and general fitness level, but if you’re managing hills on a ss don’t think you’ll have any problems, I regularly ride my ss through London including shooters hill if you know it and it’s definitely easier on a decent mtb

If you're not doing trails but looking for a bit more comfort you might be better off with a hybrid, any MTB will be harder work on the road. (edited)

It's certainly capable of a short commute like that.
I'm currently riding my MTB for commuting because my hybrid's waiting for a part.
If your route takes in gravel paths/towpaths, etc. it's ideal. My MTB is so much more fun on the canal towpath than my hybrid is.
However, if it's all paved roads/cycle lanes then you might want to switch the tyres for something narrower and smoother.
Depending on your speed, you may also find MTB gears frustrating; they're ideal for going up hills but on the flat/downhill I find I run out of gears and want to go faster. That can be fixed with a bigger chainring or smaller sprocket, but it's more expense and faff.
Though if you're used to a single speed this may not bother you much.
By the time you've switched the tyres and gears, you've effectively turned it into a hybrid.

Huh!. Why? Before these fad bikes came in they all had 20+ gears. No suspension and were great on and off road with a hybrid tyre suitable for both. Unless a serious performance need of course. (edited)
