These are no longer supported by Amazon, no longer getting security updates, and potentially allowing hackers to livestream your conversations.

From Which?:

"Easvesdropping on your home via an Amazon EchoFollowing its UK release in 2017, Amazon’s Echo effectively kick-started the smart speaker market. The public instantly loved this gadget that could play music and podcasts, or just respond to questions put to voice assistant Alexa.

Our ethical hackers looked at a first generation Amazon Echo smart speaker, believed by Which? to have lost security support in autumn 2021. Using a pre-existing vulnerability, researchers were able to exploit a physical attack giving remote control over the device. From here, an attacker could steal user data and even stream the live microphone, all without the user knowing."

    My 1st Gen sits consuming 3.2w when idle. That’s £10 a year.

    My Echo Dot 3rd Gen consumes 1.8w. That’s about £5.70 a year.

Just something to bear in mind when choosing which one to go for. But of course the 1st Gen speaker is really good compared to the small Dots. (edited)

Well worth the ''extra'' £4.30 a year running costs

I bought one of these recently. It was very difficult too get connected - took many hours as it was on old firmware which barely works now. Eventually got it connected but Spotify didn't work until the firmware was updated. It's an automatic process but if you're patient and leave it for a day or so then it will update. Once setup all good but be prepared for a battle to get it working.

There's a couple of YouTube video howtwo's if you get stuck. I had to do a manual setup on both mine, yet my brother's setup automatically. May be just your luck with the firmware installed on the one you recieve.

Well if you have more resources so we can all try this out with folks then I’m sure we would love to have the details. Dunno if it’s real or not as which target boomers and just throw out poorly researched stuff without fully diving in. “Could”? Either they can or they can’t and I’m not sure could is definitive enough for me.

can you pair 2 of these like you can the newer devices?
    ohmygod2006's avatar
You CANNOT stereo pair this model.

got one of these and an echo v4 (bought for the smart hub feature) - still think the original sounds as good if not better than the v4, Steal at this price.

Still no YouTube Music on Alexa unfortunately so it's a no from me 👎

Neither does Tidal in the UK, so Argentina/ India hack for YT and Tidal not fully utilizable and need to pay full whack for either Spotify or Amazon Music unlimited

I'm not sure if you'll be able to use this as a trade-in on a new Amazon device, just had a look and couldn't see a generation 1 on the list?
    ayeworld's avatar
Yes you can. Just got £25 gift card for mine. Don't know if the 1st generation Echo Dot is though.

I use the Google infrastructure but I have my mum's prime benefits.. Do you just ask Alexa to play x or do you have to have an additional subscription for that?
    I_Gibbs_I's avatar
No extra fee you just ask Alexa to play x song by x artist and it will play the song from whatever music service you subscribe to (Spotify/Amazon music etc)
  10. BKji's avatar
Does it needs to connect to main or have battery in it?
    tiree's avatar
    Mains only.

Just be careful, as the 1st gen don't like some newer wifi/routers. It took me nearly 3 hours to get it connected to network and I had to use some old iphone instead my samsung s21. I don't have an idea why is that but it is quite common now when I checked on the Internet

After that it is really solid (edited)

    I can't say for a 100% certainty, or anything?, but ...

This particular original Amazon Echo, came out, at the best part of 6/7+ Year's back, or whatever?

Timewise, that length of time may feel like nowt all time, or whatever (which it is), but tech wise, that's plentyyyyyyy long enough, basically? - especially in this country.

Certain Wi-Fi technologies were either still coming into their own at the time, and/or were not available altogether?, full stop.

Higher tech (more often than not anyway), can alway's work with lower tech.

But it's not necessarily guaranteed, when it's the other way round? - unfortunately ...

That's how I'm seeing your current 'situation', with it, etc, anyway?

I bought one of these last month when they were on sale and it's brilliant in my kitchen. Great sound for the price!
    agentjont's avatar
Are you able to compare it to how the newer speaker sounds or to an Echo Dot? No worries if not! I should probably just gamble on it at this price!
  14. tiree's avatar
These are a brilliant buy at this price , I bought two the last time this deal was posted. Came with the original shrink wrapping and appeared brand new.

Excellent deal! We still have ours from day 1 (in the UK), it still works absolutely fine.

I have 11 echos of various types. I keep them turned off nowadays to save a few quid except in the room we are in.
    billyboy101's avatar
Works out to run £3 each a year?
  19. EdCov's avatar
Just checking they have not introduced the ability to stereo pair two of these? I think you still need a later model for that. £32.22 would be fantastic price for a good pair of Alexa bluetooth speakers.

Do these ones come with an aux/headphone Jack port? Last one I ordered off eBay in a similar deal I found on here didn’t come with one which is strange. Thanks!

Don't think they do. Currently unpacking following moving. Will dig mine out if no one else answers.

Cant go wrong at that price. Not sure how it will compare to my echo dot, but need a extra alexa device anyhow!

I know this is a bit vague, but can anyone let me / us know what major thing this 1st gen Echo no longer supports.

I want it mostly for Spotify and home automation / Alexa and possibly pairing it to another 1stgen and or 3rd gen spot.

*Just got one for my mum, anyway for ~£16 I can't really go wrong. (edited)
    yacoboy's avatar
Works with multi-room, but not home theatre mode.

Be aware that Amazon no longer provide security updates for this model so you could be opening up your home network to various threats. I would recommend putting them on a secure guest network without access to your LAN.
