I had one of these, not a huge fan for the reasons you said - mostly the 8GB fixed RAM and despite the RTX 3050, it’s only 40W and the display is 60Hz so it doesn’t really fill the gaming requirement either. That said, at £565, it’s still quite a compelling choice; much more than when it was £650-700.

The soldered RAM / no upgrade slot and 60 Hz screen are deal breakers. I'd have been OK with 90 Hz though... (edited)

If its going to be soldered ram it should be 16GB minimum otherwise its a pointless machine and as soon as manufacturers realise none of us want these crippled bs machines the better, what's sustainable about having to buy a whole new machine because you run out of ram, no they want us to consume more because it keeps stock rotation. I dont get this design choice from MSI.
Their 'Prestige' notebook i have used before (different model) and was impressed. I'd happily recommend in terms of weight, build quality etc.
But for the few $$$ they have saved by soldering RAM, i have to ignore this model.
Else, for the same spec but non-soldered RAM, it would be worth more than £600 to me (even with 8GB).

For me (YMMV) I have to buy a laptop with not only today's needs in mind, but what it will work like in 3 years.
Edit: Just to labour the point - I can understand that some people only want / can get by with 8GB, thats fine. But those same people therefore only require an i3 and integrated graphics.
Honest question: Who needs a discrete graphics card but only fixed 8GB system RAM ?? (edited)

As I said above, this would probably have been better with no discrete GPU or a lesser one (MX550/570) and the budget allocated to 16GB RAM out of the box. The RTX 3050 seems like such an odd choice, especially when locked down to 35/40W with a 60Hz display.

    Soldered ram?.. Ok bye

I don't get it either but assume it's because it's extremely thin and light. Which makes you wonder why they didn't do 16GB as the base version and charge £50-100 more (people would still pay it).

Seems so anti consumer to have a fixed ram, wtf

Laptops have been anti-consumer ever since the cases lost the separate access panels to upgrade the RAM and the harddrive IMO.

Would have been, on paper, really quite ideal and well balanced small form factor casual gaming/productivity laptop if you could get 16gb ram in there. A shame.

Should be an auto ban on any laptop deals with less than 16GB of ram

Let's get this in perspective, for most users, 8GB RAM is sufficient.

It's not upgradable and arguably it should be, but you could pay 5 times this price and have a non-upgradable MacBook, so it's hardly the worst thing in the world!

A little more perspective, threads for laptops are filled with people banging on about soldered RAM. How many buyers actually upgrade the RAM on their machines? I’d bet a tiny proportion.

Integrated batteries that are difficult to replace are likely the reason most machines are binned before their useful life.

good cpu gimped by 8 gb stuck on ram
    gaming is a terrible experience

    omg is this apple?

now all we need is for MSI to say they will be net zero by 2030 even though the nature of their components means they are creating a climate disaster by their greedy corporate practices

Soldered RAM should not be a thing in 2023!

Soldered RAM is everywhere in 2023. They can fit faster RAM.

The answer is to vote with your feet and buy a Framework.

I'm pleased you pointed out the soldered RAM; great deal, but I'd want the option to add in some more RAM in the future.

To be fair 8GB is ok for light use.
One benefits of SSDs is that using the swap file is a lot less painful than the old days of HDDs.

12th gen Intel and Win11 will drain the battery. Other than that pretty good laptop.

I have 8th gen i5 think it is (8350u) and recently installed windows 11. Is it that bad on a laptop that 11 should be avoided?

I'm heartened so many people are just saying No to such crippled machines. 8GB is old hat, so unless it's upgradable you may aswell buy a Chromebook. I bought the Asus Vivobook with IG and 16GB RAM, because I know it will still be useful in 5+ years.
