My mate has this bike it's excellent, handles well and has been very reliable, especially considering he never cleans or lubes the chain (which I strongly disagree with). I ride on a bike twice the price and he will happily keep up with me, its mostly down to the rider

He'll get slower and slower if he doesn't clean or lube the chain - I learned that from experience

    Good starter bike.

Not a bad price but I would be tempted to look out for a good condition 2nd hand bike, 2 x8 is a bit limiting.

    That's a mountain biker attitude

Just as an FYI this bike can be purchased for £532.35 direct from Halfords using student discount including Totum which is incredibly easy to get. I know lots of members on here are Totum students so it's worth mentioning.

How does this compare to a Triban SE 500? Thanks

Looks like the triban might be slightly better overall, but it will depend on your preferences and individual circumstances. For example Halfords/Tredz accept cycle to work vouchers so the boardman can be had around 33% cheaper and split over 12 months of payments. To the best of my knowledge decathlon doesn't accept C2W.

With Claris i think £300 is more than enough or buy 2nd hand

Maybe a daft question but I'm completely new to road bikes. How come mountain bikes or hybrids often come with hydraulic disc brakes at this price point, but road and gravel bikes don't? (edited)
    broadyo796's avatar
The brake and shifter are separate on flat bar set ups and they've have been around for a long time, Drop bar shifters are combined and are it's much newer tech.

There’s no way he’s any good if he treats his bikes like this!

I don't agree with it and frankly I don't even think it's safe, I would be worried about the chain snapping off or a mechanical part failing.

Also how do you know he "isn't any good"? He is super fit, semi pro athlete. It shows that you don't need a flash bike to keep up in a lot of circumstances it is largely down to your fitness level.

Semi pro Tosh. Anyone who is any good on a bike, even keen amateur, looks after their kit. Not lubing their chain - do me a favour. Loads of BS

I am talking about he is a semi pro footballer and I really couldn't care less about what you think you're clearly a very opinionated and emotional person. I am simply stating that good fitness carries you far on any reasonably good bike, maintenance helps too ofc.
