Yeah this one has a quad core CPU the one in the link has a slower Tri Core CPU and it also doesn't have a 2.5Gbe WAN port, there may be other differences but this Strix model is a better router IMO and it now costs less

Which would be better, this or the TP link AX5400? theres £10 difference......

ASUS, no question about it. They're not called TP Stink for no reason (even caused me to use a double negative, sad times )

Stupid question incoming.... I'm with Virgin, can I simply swap out the Virgin router for this?
    Danger_Mouse's avatar

You'll need to put the Virgin hub into modem mode and then connect this to it via a network cable (comes in the box) (edited)

Has anyone tried turning the usb port into an NAS drive with an external hdd/sdd, how does the router handle it? 1.7Ghz quad core and 512mb should be decent enough

I don't have this router but I do have a very old now DSL-AC68U and a newer TUF-AX5400. On both of these I tried running an external HDD as NAS. Neither worked satisfactorily. On both machines I could not get password controlled file permissions to work. So all files were accessible, and editable to any user on the LAN. Naturally this was unacceptable. Then one day when I was using the AX5400 I found the files unaccesible. Turned out the disk had become corrupted and all files were unrecoverable, fortunately I had backups. So I gave up and turned to using a Raspberry Pi with openmediavault. That's been running for probably a year or more now with absolutely no issues. In fact because it has run so faultlessly I've just realised I haven't checked the system in months and it will almost certainly need some updates doing. (edited)

Anyone looking for more oompf there's a great deal on the refurbished AX5400, seller will accept 75 euro, I just offered and bought one for that. With taxes puts it back to 90 euro. Works out at £80 Inc delivery.

Have you received this yet? If so how is it?

Can confirm after a few weeks with the router, its excellent. would recommend.

I have this not for its intended purpose though - i use it as a VPN router client for routing a vlan through.

The processor is nice and quick but asuswert-merlin seems buggy on this compared to my old ac68u.
    MrPieUK's avatar
That's a bit of a put off. What issues is it having with merlin? I want to use my ac68u in ai mesh and grt a WiFi 6e. Wish the ax68 would come down in price....

This any good to use with Virgin? 3 routers (Hub 5s) I’ve gone through now that just stop working………I’ve got a couple of the dots (or what ever they are called which have worked ok to be honest but I’m sick of the routers giving up…….and the tech support is shocking and have to wait so long to get to the right part to book and engineer

Not sure what problems you're having but if it's just WiFi signal is rubbish then this'll be like night and day to the Virgin hub but it'll need a working hub to be in modem mode otherwise this won't help

If only they provided at least 1x 2.5Gbps lan port too

I know 2 devices together could pull more than 1Gbps but still feels wrong.

    OpenWRT compatible?

I have standard Now TV Router that I have a Tenda MW6 Mesh system plugged in to. Whilst this extends wifi range, I dont think the speeds we get are acceptable (roughly half of what the router outputs without Tenda system activated). I have been tempted to replace the tenda mesh system, but would this router give us a good combination of range and speed? I'm only on 50mbps download due to where we live so done need anything fancy, it would just be good to have something reliable that doesnt need resetting every night

Not sure how big your property is, but I've found these Asus routers cover my whole 1 bed flat really well, without the need of any boosters etc...

Alternative to this is Redmi AX6000, ~£55 from aliexpress, and install openwrt on it.

Not for everyone but I've just done that. Wifi 6E with 4x4 antenna at 5ghz.

Do you have a link to the seller? Most popping up at $85 from what I can see cheers

May be a stupid question incoming... But had problems with the Virgin Hub 4 for weeks... constant issues with the wired connections when both Xbox Series X and PS5 are plugged in with Cat8 cables for both.

If I get this and plug in 3x Cat8 cables (Xbox, PS5 and TV) all going to fix my internet woes?
is it worth the £90? I guess I should just answer my own question.. Yes go buy it!
    Danger_Mouse's avatar

This will be a lot better than the Virgin hub by miles, so it may solve all your issues, though what Cat8 cables are you using, sadly not all cables are made equal

Someone help !! I have a normal BT smart hub 2.. If i get this will it reach to the other side of garden.. Currently the BT router only just with reach at a push.#

    Thanks anyone that helps
    Danger_Mouse's avatar

There's no guarantees as each house is different but these do have much better WiFi than the BT supplied routers, range and speed.

Worst case, if you're not happy you can return it to Amazon.

anyone know it i can use this with airband? thanks

Does it have QoS/queue management to reduce bufferbloat i.e. provides this service for other devices as well? I realise some routers recognise gaming device and do traffic prioritisation for it but I'm looking for QoS/ queue management for all devices depending on the demand. Thanks in advance. (edited)
    Iru786's avatar
It does. You can install Asus Merlin firmware and use different versions of QOS as well
