Updated title and some infomation below Thanks for sharing.

As the holiday season approaches, we are excited to share that we have a new PS5 model launching. To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.

The new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte. If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

    The leaks were true.
Now the question is will we see the PS5 Pro next year?
    sjr88's avatar
The only reason I'd sell my current ps5

Will we get massive discounts for existing stocks?
    KIRK_LAZARUS's avatar
Existing gen looks like a better deal if you factor in the old stand and free games . Existing gen will be replaced and become rare and oos over time . I would grab if asap if i were u (got mine a week ago ) .

Good to see they've reduced the size and weight. Never got over how huge and heavy the thing was compared to the Series X I swapped it out for.

There was a rumour that they had found out Xbox performance was superior and they overclocked the chips they had, trying to compensate with beefier cooling

It probably becomes more obvious that they did this as Xbox draws less power while being more powerful than PS5 (edited)

Am I right in thinking the disc version allows you to load up PS4 games? I have a shelf full of PS4 games and if this is correct it would seem to make more sense for me to get the disc version.
    the-running-man's avatar
    That's correct.

Price is still £479.99 rather disappointingly

Sony are a business, not a charity.
The overall cost savings per unit, increase Sony's profits. The redesign was mainly for their benefit, not ours.

So just cosmetic and no extra specs ?

    175GB extra on-board storage.

They need to do a PRO.

Can we maybe get some games now? No?

"Vertical stand sold seperate" Come on Sony, you included one with the current PS5.
    CremeDeMenthe's avatar
It's just greed, also slim models are almost always cheaper to produce and they've kept the price at £480
  12. Mark_Hickman's avatar
Damn it ive hardly used mine since release day, played like 3 games and now theres a new model, Really shouldn't have bought it (edited)
    deleted449189's avatar
Seems to me it’s the same console in a different shell at a still rather expensive price point, personally won’t be swapping my day one console for one of these.
  13. mehdi.tlili's avatar
They don't even put it next to the original PS5 for size comparison, what an incompetent redactor
  14. EmeraldGreen's avatar
Is it still only RDNA 1.1 Refuse to purchase a PS5 when you consider the Xbox Series S is RDNA 2
    MDL199's avatar
Pretty sure the PS5 is RDNA 2 just like Xbox

Usage in video game consolesEditCustom configurations of the RDNA 2 graphics microarchitecture are used in the PlayStation 5[7][44] from Sony, Xbox Series X and Series S consoles[9] from Microsoft, with proprietary tweaks and different GPU modifications in each system's implementation. Valve announced on July 15, 2021, that their Steam Deck would feature the RDNA 2 architecture. The Steam Deck was released in February 2022.

Wasn't people stating this was fake lol

    Soon gone quiet

I stand corrected. I didn't think they would have done this so quickly after the Spider-Man edition console being released.
    sasuke0's avatar
Yeah, they shafted the Spiderman bundle buyers
  18. magnus1983's avatar
PS5 is 3 years in to its life and you still have to pay £480.
    nickroll's avatar
RRP is £480. You don't have to pay it. There have been two official price (MSRP) drops this year.
  19. John.Panter's avatar
I hate the new design. The fins easily catch of clothing and when putting in and out of bags when travelling. The ps4 box design was travel friendly.
    doppo666's avatar
Keep the box it comes in and put it in that to take on travels, im sure there’s carry cases for it if not
  20. jimbobwalton's avatar
It's slimmer and more expensive. Plus you have to pay for a stand too?

    Nah
    MDL199's avatar
I'm not sure this one needs a stand looking at pics. And the price of the slim model will definitely fall. I've held off because the original PS5 was just too big. This time next year I reckon the standard price will be around £399.
  21. XP200's avatar
"But...but......Sony won't release a new PS5 model because they are bundling the new spiderman game with the phat model", and "a price cut does not mean a new model is coming, just Sony moving stock around"........they screamed red faced with anger that they just spent £400 on the old phat model 2 months before the new revised model is launched. Lol
    thebhoyprime's avatar
they've made the digital version dearer, and you have to pay now for a vertical stand.

apart from the size they've only upgraded the storage by 1/5th.

    what a bargain! (edited)
  22. Phil_Me's avatar
Why does the separate disc drive cost 50% more in the UK than the USA? That's crazy extra markup
  23. scribbler's avatar
Gutted I have waited ages to get a PS5 due to the console size/shape not fitting in my media cab. Based on these pics it still wont and is still a stupid shape. Very disappointing.
    James_Heneghan's avatar
Simple, just buy a bigger media cab.
  24. Elmore45's avatar
It's definitely smarter to look at.
But would the disc drive being removable have performance impacts?
Genuinely don't know, I'm not an expert.

Recently plunged on the standard disc ps5, when game did their trade in promo. I'd have preferred this model, but wouldn't have paid full price for it, I was only lured in to the other because the trade deal helped me get rid of a switch that was getting no interest online
    Random_Frugal's avatar
Games don’t get played off disc anymore. You install it on the console fully before you play. The Disc then is only used to verify you’re allowed to play the game at that point.
  25. Franklin_Goodwin's avatar
I don't see the appeal apart from it being smaller. You won't be getting any game bundles anytime soon either. I'm not regretting buying my PS5 in the EE Store deal, because it's £100 cheaper and came with EA FC 24
    KIRK_LAZARUS's avatar
£386 fifa bundle seems like a bargain now looking at the updated pricing. Also managed to get £40 paypal referral and £40 cashback 😁😁
  26. Rickstarbo's avatar
Whats with the price of the separate Blu ray drive? $79.99 USD and £99.99 GBP

The price should be £65.08 GBP going on the current exchange rate. Why are we being charger an extra £34.91 for the same product compared to USA?
    FIRE40's avatar
it's never about the exchange rates. It's about the market demand and general income levels.
  27. bp4917's avatar
Nice feature to be able to upgrade the digital edition
  28. Sardonicus's avatar
Ehhh, I'm happy enough with my day one digital edition. Not including a stand is a poor show IMO, means a potential buyer has to shell out more.
  29. 2minutenoodles's avatar
Quite impressed with the launch pricing actually but just as you think they couldn’t make it look uglier

I was hoping they would change the design to be less, I'll be honest, ugly.
No price drop for a slim model?
    Extra cost for the stand?
I was under the impression Sony was making money now on each console sold? So if this costs less to manufacture then where's the savings for the consumer?
    What's going on?
    nickroll's avatar
It's outselling the Series S|X by a million consoles every month worldwide. Quite simply - there's no reason to. They're a business with a product at a price point that's working. (edited)
  33. luvclub's avatar
The current GBP/USD exchange rate is £1 = $1.23. Since UK prices are quoted including 20% VAT, UK price should roughly be equivalent to the US price.

    PS5 with drive
    499.99USD / 1.23 = £406.50 net of VAT
    £406.5 x 1.2 = £487.79 including VAT (which is near enough the £479.99 they're charging)

However it is surprising that the non-drive version is so much cheaper in the UK. Based on the $449.99 it should be £439, but is only £389.99. It is not surprising that the add-on drive retails cheaper in the US at $79.99 vs the UK £99.99. If it was converted from the $79.99 then it would only be £78 and buying the digital SKU for £389.99 and the addon drive for £78 separately would be cheaper than buying the £479.99 SKU.

Makes sense they have picked US to launch the new console. There is a slimming craze sweeping the country and a lot of companies are feeling the heat in the stock market.

Timely move by Sony to stay relevant.

Something will have been compromised for sure, the fan / cooling?
    abigsmurf's avatar
Cooling will be downgraded but it's also likely using a smaller die which will produce less heat.
  36. Fadd_Lo_Lun_Mera's avatar
Any change in spec because that’s all I care about. As long as they have changed the innards with latest and greatest then it’s fine.
    northfield's avatar
its fundamentally the same, its a 'slim' rather than 'pro' so no boost in performance but will cost less to run
  37. sm9690's avatar
If you purchase the PS5 Digital Edition, you can add the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive for PS5 later, as it will also be sold separately for 79.99 USD | 119.99 EURO | 99.99 GBP | 11,980 JPY.

That US-UK price difference is mad, even with 20% tax, it's still a £20 difference
    Mark_Harp's avatar
Always been the same. Products are cheap over there, but the level of outgoings is insane. Early 2000s I moved to San Francisco for work, doubled my pay but after costs I had less in my pocket than I did living in London!
  38. DBO187's avatar
Think i'll see if i can get the original a bit cheaper
    IFRIT's avatar
Huh? The fat has been on sale for £410 for the last week... (edited)
  39. deleted169561's avatar
Just a way for them to make more money, with minimum benefit for the consumer.

On a related note I'm also one of those that bought the PS5 a while ago and used it probably less than 10 times sigh..
  40. HottUKDealer's avatar
Wonder if they’ve reduced the power consumption
    XP200's avatar
Talk is it consumes less power, which would not be a problem seeing as the launch phat ps5 just sucks up the lekky, but saying that the last revised model got that down to 200 watts, so i suspect the slim might manage to get down to say 170/180 watts.
