grade A is perfect as new, B is some signs of use, C is heavy use
B has always been almost perfect when I have purchased, maybe a little grubby as cex dont clean anything it seems but and quick wipe over and very good.

Is a good deal, you do have to watch out for dents and speakers that have blown out but in both cases they gave me a refund, this version doesn't supply airplay if its the first release (edited)

You can return to a store for any reason I believe within the first 14 days if purchased mail order

I have one of these. Sound is good but that's all. The big problem is the microphone. If want it to ignore 95% of what you ask Google to do then this SONOS is for you!
fazzy-bhoy
This is the Play:1. It doesn't have a microphone. The Sonos One (replacement for this), has the mic.

These work great as rear speakers. 2 of these as rears and a Sonos Playbase and you have the best budget 5.1 surround setup ever.
hughrocksyo
Seconded, have 2 paired with a Beam 2 and it works brilliantly I love it

I guess these work via wifi through the Sonos app? Are they still supported by Sonos?
Years ago I bought Samsung M5 speakers but the app was awful and didn't get updated so just use them via Bluetooth which isn't great
CatsWithThumbs
Yes and yes they are still supported

Any airplay 2 compatibility on these? Or are they like the play 3 and don't play nicely?

How many can you attach, how do you attach this to your tv ?
richco
You can't connect this speaker on its own directly to your TV. You'd need an accompanying Sonos soundbar to connect to the TV, then you can link these up as wireless surround speakers

How does this compare to the Play5(s5)? Thanks
Samt9797
I have the new Five and a one sl. Play 5 miles better if you plan to just have the one speaker. Can’t really compare them in honesty. My five fills the whole of downstairs.
TheJimp
Experts, is a Play 5 Gen 1 worth getting for a similar price to this? I'm likely to primarily use with a 3.5mm line-in. No plans to get any more Sonos, so not worried about but playing well with later generation speakers.
I've got Home Assistant, and a few Echo dots and Nest Mini speakers so would potentially use these with it.
usenetz
Since the Play:1 doesn’t have a line-in the option which better suits you would be the Play:5 1st Gen

Had 2 perfect Sonos Play1s Grade B from Cex previously - would highly recommend, not a scratch on them.
Would go for these or a Play 3, instead of Play 5 Gen 1 to make sure you get continued updates for the foreseeable.

What happens when the updates stop?

I purchased these new back in 2014 and they’re still giving me great service. At the time they were the only ones that worked perfectly grouping etc. More brands seem to work well now. At the time they were expensive these used ones are great value. I have the original sound bar and sub also nearly 10 years old. (edited)

Agree, we have a couple of 1's and a 3. The 1s are great in the kids bedrooms and the 3 we use downstairs. Annoyingly Sonos dropped support, but still play well through Alexa....

I’ve bought two Sonos 5s and a Sonos Amp from CeX all have been great value for money and in superb condition.

Picked 2 of these up from CEX last week, grade B. One is immaculate, the other has 2 tiny marks on the mesh that are barely noticeable.
Work excellently as rear surround with my Beam Gen 1 and Sub Mini.

Bought a grade C play3 for £60 last week, few minor scratches and the rubber had faded (which is much more noticeable on the white version). Better sound than the 1 so, unless you're going to be looking at it all the time, for that.
majorwedgy666
Only Sonos speaker I haven't heard is the 3, heard conflicting reports about doing quality, apparently the 3 is an older model and they have tuned the 1s better, as is always the case with sound, very subjective

Good deal this - I have Play 1 and One all round my house and no complaints.
nickbristol2023
you can get a roam though and connect via that i beleive

Great speakers, still have these as the very first product I got from Sonos way back when.
Work perfect and sound is still great, they are bulletproof.
Just do what I do, even if you have Sonos equipment that is S2 app compatible, just put everything through the S1 app instead.
Until S1 is dropped, these speakers and any original Sonos is as good as anything they put out now. Play 3’s and 5’s are the same.
jerrysimon
Yep I'm still running S1 on my 9 year old Play1s, Playbar and Sub.

Got this using the JL promotion, its major issue is that it cannot function as a basic bluetooth speaker. I shouldnt always need to have a service to make use of it.
matwalaboy
What is the issue with it being a basic BT speaker, as thats the main use I am thinking for it?

Is this such a great deal for such an old speaker?

Just picked up a white, thanks for the heads up

Thanks for posting this.
I ordered one to go in our bedroom. Arrived this morning in original box and in excellent condition.

How does the Sonos Play 5 1st gen compare to this?

Oh I’m so tempted!. The sound that comes out of these is amazing. I have another speaker double the size and this one blows it out the water
Banzibarn123
Can these be added to Google Home?
habylab
For what purpose? You cannot group together in Google home any Sonos products.
bigjoeftq
I have a Sony xb43 for music in my spare room how dose this compare am I worth getting this or stick with the Sony ? TiA

Thanks OP. Been on the look out for a couple of speakers for the dining room for ages, but never got round to it. These should do the job nicely.

I’m also still using a pair of Play 1s bought back in the day. If the previous owner has moved them to S2 (like I have), I’m not sure they can go back to S1 even if you transfer the owner? I personally would not spend £60 on a smart speaker that will be potentially 10 years old with an unknown remaining support life. I think there is better value when buying nearer the start of its release cycle.
usenetz
Yes you can revert to S1 by doing a factory reset which should be done anyway between different owners.

If click and collect do you have 2 days from collection to return?
Also presume these would pair up with an echo flex either by Bluetooth or aux cable? In which case the support question is hopefully irrelevant from that side
CatsWithThumbs
No, these have neither bluetooth nor aux connection

Just gone for a Play 3 B grade thanks!

What a faff to get connected to my existing Sonos system.
Just couldn't get it to connect via WiFi. Had to connect it via LAN cable in the first instance and then once added, was able to connect via WiFi.
