FNAC deliveries to the UK

I recently placed an order for a couple of DVD boxsets from the French retailer fnac.com, which arrived a couple of days later without any issues.

About a week ago, I ordered an internet radio from fnac.com, which is now being held up in customs. The online tracking says: "Parcel held in customs - insufficient documents (invoice or customs documents)".

I have written to FNAC to ask them to resolve the problem, but have not heard back from them.

For both orders, the invoices from FNAC said that I had been charged UK VAT. The invoices also indicate a UK VAT number GB150951224 - according the HMRC, this number is indeed registered to FNAC France.

As I have paid UK VAT at the time of purchase and been issued a UK VAT invoice (FNAC usually attaches three copies of the VAT invoice to the parcel), shouldn't FNAC be paying any tax due directly to HMRC and ensure that the parcel gets delivered to me without a lengthy customs procedure and further fees?

Both of my orders were above £135 in value. The first order was delivered within a couple of days and without any customs delays, which is why I do not understand why my second order is now being held up for so long without any resolution in sight. Shouldn't the same procedure apply for both orders?

Has anyone here placed an order with FNAC in France for delivery to the UK in the last couple of weeks and what have been your experiences with customs?

I thought that orders over £135 were now treated the same as the "old system". VAT and any import duty are charged by HMRC at the point of entry. FNAC should not be charging VAT at the point of sale.......Goods below £135 FNAC would collect the VAT and remit to HMRC.

Yes, that should be rule, unless the retailer completes the customs process for the buyer and pays all duties directly to HMRC.

For instance, when I shop from Amazon.de or Amazon.fr, the retailer (Amazon) bills me for "import duties" (i.e. UK VAT, as no other duties are payable for EU goods) during the payment process, and I get those orders via my regular Amazon courier here in the UK, as if I had ordered from Amazon.co.uk.

I assumed that FNAC was doing the same, but apparently they are not as good as Amazon at dealing with post-Brexit customs formalities when sending goods from the EU to the UK.

I have no idea what will happend to my FNAC parcel that is being held up in customs since last week. I have not received any communications in this respect.

    Have you contacted the courier?

Yes, but I have had no response from the courier (Chronopost) either. I wrote to them via their messaging facility. The robot replied that I should expect a human response "within 2 business hours" - this was last Thursday evening!
