Something has gone really wrong in Britain.

Our economy has tanked, our freedoms are shrinking, and social divisions are growing. Our politicians seem most interested in their own careers, and much of the media only make things worse. We are living in a country almost unrecognisable from the one that existed a decade ago. But whose fault is it really? Who broke Britain and how did they do it?

Bold and incisive as ever, James O'Brien reveals the shady network of influence that has created a broken Britain of strikes, shortages and scandals. He maps the web connecting dark think tanks to Downing Street, the journalists involved in selling it to the public and the media bosses pushing their own agendas. Over ten chapters, each focusing on a particular person complicit in the downfall, James O'Brien reveals how a select few have conspired - sometimes by incompetence, sometimes by design - to bring Britain to its knees.

Agreed. The way he makes interesting, concise and valid points over and over again is brilliant.

    Heated. Thanks for posting op.

Kinda difficult to get over something that has hurt so many and was perpetuated by the ill informed and easily manipulated. (edited)

There are a lot of people on here who are very scared of hearing the facts. James O’Brien only deals on well researched facts & he explains his thoughts with a clarity found no where else in the media. James & LBC generally is the most important broadcaster in the U.K. right now.
It will change your life if u r not already listening.

You can tell when there's no constructive criticism just hate towards him and the response to them are brilliant!

I love how riled up people get when all he does is state pure facts.

I find him amusing. A posh public school educated person moaning endlessly about Brexit and about how he and his listeners are clever, tolerant and virtuous people, unlike the rest of us who voted Leave.

He's a superb example of the pompous, superior, self-congratulatory attitudes which helped Remain to its hilarious 2016 defeat.

This is an excellent highly recommended book. If you already despise the government, you will hate them x2 more after reading this.
    Richikeapimp's avatar
Nah, I hate the government but hate gas lighting people still going on about Brexit

He is utterly brilliant. Some of the comments above are hilarious, they don't like him but clearly listen to him to know so much

What better accolade can someone have in an era of echo chambers and no platforming than spending time regularly listening to someone they don't agree with?

Always well researched, hard to argue this country isn't broken! Unsurprisingly the little Englanders are out in the comments 🫣

This guy rattle's on so much at the beginning of his radio show it can be up to half an hour before he takes a caller! (edited)
    nickyminx's avatar
Yes, he is so informative & really thinks deeply about the chosen topic & doesn’t rely completely on callers to fill his airtime. (edited)

If he'd been running the country for the last 14 years we wouldn't be in the mess we're all in now!

The wrong people become politicians - and for all the wrong reasons.
    barbiegirl's avatar
Well we only pay them £86.5k a year, so what can we expect. A graduate from a decent Uni with half a brain can make more than that in their first year (really, I know several including family members), so how do we expect to get the quality people?

If we pay them more, then people complain about how many nurses that could be.

If they are all the brightest Oxbridge grads, then that attracts complaints too.

So we pay peanuts and guess what, we get monkeys. On all sides of the spectrum. None of them are any good. Look at the US - 350m people and Biden and Trump is the best they can come up with.

Democracy is also an illusion of control IMO - and the trade off of our X in a box once every 4 years is that politicians do what they think will get them votes, not what is actually the best thing to do for the country or its people.

Add to that a growth in population that our infrastructure simply can't cope with and you get the mess we are all seeing.

Still, it could be worse. Imagine being Haitian.

"We are living in a country almost unrecognisable from the one that existed a decade ago."

can't disagree with that........the SS Great Britain is a sinking ship

Brexit, Pandemic, Ukraine were three major causes.
    tek-monkey's avatar
From a purely strategic point of view the situation in Ukraine is in our interest to prolong, as it keeps Russian troops occupied and their armed forces as a whole weakened. They won't try anything else while fighting Ukraine, and general consensus in Russia is Ukraine is a stepping stone to rebuilding the USSR of old. As long as the battle goes on in Ukraine they can't attack a NATO country which keeps the rest of Europe in relative peace, but military spending in the Baltics has ramped up lately in anticipation.

Just a gentle reminder for anyone who wants to give O'Brien money. He's not always the rational, intellectual heavyweight he's trumped up to be.

Difficult to disagree with many of O'Brien's comments. Maybe double-downing leave voters will attempt to argue that Brexit was not sold to us on a ton of false promises, that the Brexit deal was in fact a good deal and that it will not adversely impact our economy for many years to come but never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
    Richikeapimp's avatar
Lockdowns destroyed the economy and closed thousands of businesses. Stop blaming Brexit just because he blames Brexit.
  15. NitrousUK's avatar
Some people here sound like they're in a Ben Shapiro like cult.
"He smacks down Brexit bigots with FACTS and LOGIC."

The way people talk about him should give a clue. It's like modern day colosseums to satiate peoples desire for vitriol as a form of entertainment. Throwing random uneducated callers off the street in, to be smacked around with articles and paragraphs of EU legislation, to show how small and pathetic they should feel about themselves.
He never comes across as someone genuinely trying to expand understanding and empathy, just spreading more hate and negativity with tribal politics.

I heard his on LBC he is a very very angry man - not a nice person
    Robbo11's avatar
O'Brien never rants. He just gets exasperated when callers come out with generalisations and sweeping statements that they can't back up when he asks them to. I often listen to his show and callers regularly tie themselves in knots because they either don't really know what they are talking about or they haven't researched the topic before they ring up and rant at him.

How they broke Britain is according to the author a charge sheet against miscellaneous poor behaviours and bad actors. There are 10 chapters each bearing a prominent name; Rupert Murdoch, Paul Dacre, Andrew Neil, Matthew Eliott, Nigel Farage. David Cameron, Jeremy Corbyn, Dominic Cummings, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.
So something for nearly everyone here.
I've just read some of the free sample. Author is a very angry man. He has assembled a ton of mud to throw and is happy to throw it. There is no attempt to address alternative explanations, mitigating factors, context, reliability of data. James O'Brien uses phrases like "levers of power" and writes of "a country in complete thrall to the lies, prejudices and manipulations of what once would have been referred to as the ruling class".
His tone grates, the title for example "How they broke Britain" is suggestive of some sort of planned connective action, I don't think this is what is meant ( Jeremy Corbyn and Liz Truss in secret pact) but is perhaps more likely to sell books than "10 people who really get my goat and why you should call for their defenestration."

Britain has not been broken by it's political classes.

It has been broken by a public addicted to easy credit and instant gratification in a consumerist world.

As an aside maybe we can agree that at least it's nice to see a kindle post that relates to a reduction on a real book by a real author rather than the usual Ai generated or self published efforts ?

It was World War Two that broke Britain and we have been in decline since then, choices made and decisions taken, the rise of the USA came at our expense but was the least worst option in a war torn Europe.James is right about a lot in this book, but there is nothing in it that is unknown to people who actually take an interest in these sort of things.People dont seem to care like they used to,to many distractions taking up brain energy.

The real broken Britain happened back in the 1970's - a properly scary time to be alive (at least by Western standards)

In any era there are going to be things which are good and things which are not. I'm not sure how useful it is to apply sound bites like "broken Britain", even if they do alliterate nicely.

I understand why people like him and I enjoy the call ins and share much of his politics but he is intellectually dishonest when someone puts across any good reasoned argument that doesn’t go his way - he either moves the goalpost to what he was arguing or equivocates by making people declare an absolutist statement to nuanced issues. He does this well which is why he’s a good persuader but poor for the discourse. moral superiority is pretty much a given for every show.
