About this deal

Was in the market for a base unit MacBook Air M3, checking out on Amazon, if you upgrade to 512GB SSD you get an 8% discount on the Midnight, Silver or Space Grey, but not the Gold, reducing the price down to £1199.97. Base memory remains at 8GB.

If in the market for a base unit, seems like a good deal, an extra 256GB SSD for £100 and a £100 discount from what would have been the normal price. Especially since is the 2024 M3 edition, which has only just been released.

Picked up one in Midnight and have Amazons excellent return policy should it be not what I expected to be

Why do they make it awkward to buy one? I would want 16gb, but can't buy this and upgrade, and the cost of the 16gb version is c. £200 more. That's £200 for an extra 8gb. Your loss Apple.

I just got the M2 version and the ram upgrade price is a joke.
Compare that to the Lenovo L380 i got recently i upgraded the ram in that myself from 8gb to 16gb for the princely sum of £6.

Just the very low heat and none existant fan noise justify the price for me

The 8gb ram on a laptop in this day and age is insane, I mean you could get 8gb as standard on a laptop 20 years ago with core M having 8gb ddr2!

That’s not true. 20 years ago 1GB ram was ground breaking, I remember buying one.

to your point though I bought a 16gb MBP exactly 10 years ago though (that was an upgrade from the base offer of 8GB then), can’t believe it’s still their base offer!

For what the base MacBook Air is meant to be used for, there really isn’t a need for more RAM as unified memory works so well. If you want to exceed the capabilities of this machine, don’t moan about it. (edited)

Its Apple though. The compulsion is overwhelming for so many people who don't have a clue about computers.

I'd argue for another £100 you could just get direct from Apple, get the colour you want, and upgrade the 70w power adapter for "free", instead of the 35w.

If ordering from apple direct, might be a better idea to go for 16gb ram model for the same price as well, more future proof

Picked up the M2 version on Warehouse deals and it is faster than the latest Lenovo laptop I have with 16Gb RAM and latest Intel i5. Difference being the Lenovo has W11 and I already think 16GB RAM not enough for W11. 8GB on a Mac Air is fine.

Is an m3 pro 14 inch for £1420 brand new a good deal? Tbh I know it’s a good deal but I don’t really need a new laptop. And the money could be saved instead. But it’s so tempting to buy…

It's a good deal and I'm in the same boat. My 2019 i7 16" MBP is still running about as quick as the day I got it, absolutely no issues apart from the battery but even that isn't terrible.

So no real need for me more of just a want.

I'd save it if I were you. I scratched the itch by picking up a pristine M1 ipad pro 12.9 with Pencil for £520 on eBay instead!

Imagine paying £1200 on a laptop with 8gb ram

I paid around £800 for my MacBook Air M1 brand new with 4 year edu warranty 4 years ago now and there's not a massive difference from this... Crazy

Its okay and fine. We have blind love for Apple and will justify every single decision of Apple :P

Whats wrong having 8GB RAM and paying £1200 for it? my Macbook pro 2013 also came with 8GB RAM
