You're better off with an M1

Why, because of the price and slower SSD?
M2 has faster processor, bigger screen, better webcam, MagSafe charging to free up one of the Thunderbolt ports which would otherwise be needed for charging.

Can we keep all 8GB ram comments under this one please to help keep the thread tidy.

I had an M1 8gb and it was fine for everyday use. Web browsing, Logic, Photoshop all ran great if there’s not too many other things open. Switching to/from swap memory is seamless.

It wasn’t until I started using it for work that I would see a performance hit as I would regularly have multiple browsers open with many tabs, Teams, Outlook, multiple spreadsheets, word docs etc. it definitely struggled to keep up and I started to get memory warnings.

I upgraded to an M1 Max with 32gb and haven’t looked back. This thing has never skipped a beat with all of the above open plus Logic, Photoshop etc. I managed to pick it up on eBay for £1500.

I have a friend that had the same M1 8gb and he pretty much used it exclusively for Logic production, it was fine until he started using plugins with heavy samples and virtual instruments (pianos, strings, etc) then he was getting memory warnings constantly and kept having to freeze tracks. He upgraded to 32gb and hasn’t seen any warnings since.

If your day to day use resembles the above I would at least look at getting a 16gb model. You can argue all day that Apple manage ram efficiently, great swap memory and all that but at the end of the day 8gb is definitely a limitation at some point. But if you’re a basic user that just browses facebook, online shopping, YouTube videos, word processing etc, then 8gb is absolutely fine.

    £800 for a laptop with 8GB in 2024?

    More like 2004!

"BUILT TO LAST" won't be lasting long with 8GB ram. (edited)
