Linux is without doubt the most powerful OS in the world. Yes, you may think Windows and macOS are powerful operating systems due to the fact that they control much of the computer market but I have some stats that will change your perspective:

  • The Linux servers are being used for running Facebook, Twitter, and even Google. It is also the operating system on which various other major internet sites run.
  • Almost 100% of the world’s supercomputers run on Linux (As of 2021)
  • 96.3% of the world’s top 1 million servers run on Linux.
  • All the best cloud hosts run on Linux.
  • Yes, Android OS is also a Linux-based operating system.
Despite the fierce competition, Linux has continued to grow into becoming the most trusted operating system known to the world. Linux for Absolute Beginners is a guide for users who have never operated on Linux before. It is a reference book for those who seek to gain knowledge in a short period. This book takes away the monotonous and rather complicated language and terminologies and presents a digestible version of a beginner’s guide. You don't even have to buy a new PC to learn Linux. You can run Linux, right within your existing Windows or Mac OS systems!

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • The basics, including what Linux is, how it has evolved over the years, how Linux works, the distros of Linux, files hierarchy in Linux as well as the system architecture in Linux
  • Why programmers prefer Linux over Windows and macOS, and how Linux can help you become a better programmer
  • Step-by-step download, install, and configuration process, how to add Graphical user interface; how to add additional software; Troubleshooting; etc.
  • Automate tasks and use shell scripting
  • How to install Linux on Virtual Machines on Windows or Mac OS
  • How to make Linux look and function more like good old familiar Windows or macOS
  • All the SHELL, SCRIPTS, AND TOOLS, and how to use them
  • How to make the most use of Linux for network administration
…and much, much more!

    Thanks Boz.
Thinking to switch my laptop from W10 to Linux. Anybody have any tips please?

Linux Mint Debian would be your easiest transition as it looks and feels like Windows without all the spying and monotoring what you do . Runs faster than Windows on any PC from last 5-6years . Lighter versions are available for older hardware .

This is a great introductory book for free, if anyone is interested in expanding on the aspects covered in it, the Linux Professional Institute offer free PDF study guide downloads for their courses, the Linux Essentials 010-060 guide is worth reading even if you don't take the exam.

My Windows 10 is getting really slow and doesn't let me upgrade to W11. Thinking of moving over to Linux. I use it for basic browsing so just need something that's fast and clean looking visually. Any advice or recommendations?

Long as you are not dependent on office 365 or have basic use use means you can use the online versions then I recommend Linux for 90% of users. It’s just a fantastic OS to get things done on and comes with pretty much everything you need whilst being agile and fast. Support is generally fantastic as well.

Just to add weight to my point…

I just made Ubuntu as my main OS and am now running Windows 10 in VM for access to Office 365 suite.

Truly the best of both worlds. (edited)
