Can someone enlighten me as to how a smart meter makes the grid greener?

    Genuine question.
    matthews9479's avatar
    Google is your friend.
Smart meters help energy network operators balance the grid by providing more information about national energy consumption. This directly contributes to tackling the climate emergency. It means energy suppliers can be more efficient about how much energy they produce, as they understand more about when people need it.

Must have a smart meter ‘ counts me out
    Chiptivo's avatar
That's a shame. Just a few clicks and you could have one. They are quite amazing.
  4. ApolloCreedXXX's avatar
Very annoying people with normal meters don't receive these offers. Were still Octopus customers!
    ApolloCreedXXX's avatar
You shouldn't have to get a smart meter for these offers.
  5. mksst's avatar
heat, purely for the fact I had no idea the nero deal was weekly! Wouldn't have found out if it wasn't for the thread
    CynicalNurse's avatar
Sweet is a one off, hot drink and sausage roll are weekly.
  6. ZuuTube_'s avatar
Another dirty trick to get you to have a smart meter, meters that can be remotely shut off as they see fit, refuse their offer peeps, anytime time you're offered ANYTHING it's for their benefit not yours.
    TheVoice's avatar
There are regulations on when remote disconnection can be used and it's only for very specific circumstances.
  7. CindersDreams's avatar
Need a smart meter mmm that's discriminate. I pay more than smart meter & no freebies for me...It's OK I'm quite happy not to have a fire risk and BB in my house thank you very much!!
    Chiptivo's avatar
Careful where you leave your tin hat.
  8. DealsIUsed's avatar
I've not been 8 in a while. Can I still be eligible?
    Infinite.Element's avatar
I came here to ask how many Octoplus customers are 8... You beat me to the joke
  9. StAmFoRdLiOn's avatar
Direct Debit payment required for Octoplus. I prefer to just pay my bill off monthly. But a good spot for those that meet the criteria
    Doug_'s avatar
Even with a direct debit set up, if you make a card payment over a week before the d/d date they will adjust the d/d amount accordingly. Can be useful with a cashback card such as Chase.

    Smart meter....no thanks 🙏
    Angel21's avatar
What's wrong with having a smart Meter
  11. Lupus1462's avatar
Why not just lower bills :/ rather than using customers money to give them sweets, sausages rolls, and brews ?
    jack100's avatar
Because they want to force you to have a smart meter.
  12. stuartbailey1974's avatar
Would rather have my bills come down on price than all these crappy gimmicks
    EQL's avatar
Not costing them much (if anything), from Twitter:
Craig "...how much is being spent by octopus on these partnerships / discounts?..."
Greg: "Hi Craig - with our negotiating power, these let us give customers more value at very very little cost to us!"

Set up your D/D to only take £1, then each month when you go on to check rewards for example, you can pay the bill off via card payment, don't know if this will help you at all

None near where I live, perhaps its as well, I do not need anymore cakes !!

Is there any energy company who are capable of billing fairly and correctly.?

Octopus keep asking me for readings which I supply, which they then ignore and keep on billing based on estimated figures
    tonyawesome69's avatar
Suggest submitting a reading on the website/app rather than phone/email and this will automatically trigger an energy bill based on actual usage. (edited)

Taking advantage of lots of free pastries over the months means greatly increased risk of tooth decay and extortionate dental bills. So go ahead fill your boots - and your teeth with fillings.

Ah no, so close, next time you can activate the offer and screenshot it to use later, the qr code will expire when the giveaway ends,it will also be kept in app as a qr code for that specific offer period .

I just love Octopus deal comments to feast on the salty tears of those who don't have smart meters because they think it will microwave their brain/let the Chinese see when they're having a cup of tea/help the World Economic Forum paint cycle lanes on motorways.

But apparently as well as those awesome benefits of having a dumb meter they also want a free pastry? No dice luddites!
    heavywater's avatar
Just as well they can't get it, Gregg's have been putting 5G nanotech vaccines in their yumyums for years.

Octopus are moving to gimmicks, when they should be focusing on their prices. I'm moving to EON Next drive because they are cheaper for longer than the Octopus EV tariffs

For my own lifestyle currently, there agile pricing works out a gem, but i get other households/people would have different usage needs.

Ouch, do you have a large household? We are on electric only and average £60-£70 a month but a small household and most of the electric usage is shifted to when it's cheapest on agile.
